6 WELCOME TO THE ORTHODOX CHURCH: An Introduction to Eastern Christianity A Fall Book Study/Catechism Class This Fall, beginning on Wednesday, September 2nd, we will be offering a book study/catechism in our Community Center. We will be using the new book by (Matushka) Frederica Mathewes- Greene entitled, WELCOME TO THE ORTHODOX CHURCH: An Introduction to Eastern Christianity. You can buy the book from our bookstore for $20. Our study will begin at 7 PM and end at 8:30 PM. We will be meeting in our Community Center (and going into church when appropriate). 9 SUNDAY SCHOOL - AUGUST 16th ~ Vision Statement ~ To be a community of engaged and educated young Orthodox Christians. ~ Mission Statement ~ To encourage and foster spiritual growth of young people in our Orthodox Faith. 2nd-3rd grades: Jonna Myatt What a fun first class! We talked about the difference between a church as a building and the Church as a people. We use the word church in so many different ways, but it is so important to know that the real meaning of the Church refers to the People of God, not just a place we go or a thing we do on Sundays. We also started decorating crosses for our binders. Each child gets to collect their work into a binder to take home at the end of the year. Attendance: 7 4th-5th grades: Daphney Courey & Anastasia Theodorou It was great to see so many new faces in our class this year! And of course I am so happy to see my students from last year as well. We had a lot of fun today getting to know more about each other and we are looking forward to learning about God together. Attendance: th Grades: Presvytera Eleni & Connie Sakellaropoulos: Middle school class comprises grades 6-8. We did an icebreaker, as if the kids needed an excuse to talk to each other! Then we reviewed our curriculum for the year which will include the Sacraments and a series on peer pressure, watched a video on Be the Bee - a YouTube video series we will be using this year - and did a self-assessment of our knowledge in 15 different areas of study. Mrs Connie Sakelleropoulos and Presbytera Eleni will be team-teaching the class this year and are excited to have such an engaged group of vibrant youngsters to work and learn with! :-) Attendance: 10 Orthodox Life/High School: Orosz Attendance: 12 Costas Triantafyllis, Warren Baker & William 9

For Holy Communion and Antidoron, we should approach in an orderly, pious and respectful manner. Ushers will guide the congregation to approach row by row from front to back. Please follow the direction of the ushers. We encourage Sunday School children, teachers and their families to sit in the first few rows at the front left of the nave so that they can see what is happening in the service and get to Sunday School quickly. Priest Office Hours Fr. Demetri has designated Noon - 3 PM, Tuesday through Thursday as his office hours. If you want to meet with him (during office hours or any other time), please call his cell phone ( ) to make an appointment. Note that Father is often needed elsewhere even during these designated times. Call and schedule an appointment so that you are not disappointed. 11
