3 Kontakion - 3 rd Mode p From my Father s glory I have foolishly turned away. By my sins I squandered all the riches He gave me. Therefore like the prodigal I cry out to Him: I have sinned before You, compassionate Father. Accept my repentance, and take me back again as one of Your hired servants. The Reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 6:12-20 BRETHREN "all things are lawful for me," but not all things are helpful. "All things are lawful for me," but I will not be enslaved by anything. "Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food" -- and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that he who joins himself to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, "The two shall become one flesh." But he who is united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. Shun immorality. Every other sin which a man commits is outside the body; but the immoral man sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God? You are not your own; you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body and in your spirit which belong to God. The Reading is from The Gospel of Luke 15:11-32 The Lord said this parable: "There was a man who had two sons; and the younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of the property that falls to me.' And he divided his living between them. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took his journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in loose living. And when he had spent everything, a great famine arose in that country, and he began to be in want. So he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would gladly have fed on the pods that the swine ate; and no one gave him anything. But when he came to himself he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have bread enough and to spare, but I perish here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired servants.' And he arose and came to his fa- 3

4 ther. But while he was yet at a distance, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' But the father said to his servants, 'Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet; and bring the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and make merry; for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.' And they began to make merry. Now his elder son was in the field; and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. And he called one of the servants and asked what this meant. And he said to him, 'Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has received him safe and sound.' But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, but he answered his father, 'Lo, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command; yet you never gave me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends. But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your living with harlots, you killed for him the fatted calf!' And he said to him, 'Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. It was fitting to make merry and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.'" 7 SUNDAY SCHOOL REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 5 ~ Vision Statement ~ To be a community of engaged and educated young Orthodox Christians. ~ Mission Statement ~ To encourage and foster spiritual growth of young people in our Orthodox Faith. VPK, Kindergarten & 1st grades - Brenda Roman - Attendance: 2nd - 4th Grades - Jonna Myatt - Jan. 8 Since it was IOCC Souper Bowl Sunday, we talked about how the church cares for the needy all around the world. The class got to spin the globe and search for the countries where IOCC works (for example Ethiopia, Uganda, Syria, and Haiti) We also learned about the most common problems such as lack of clean water, food and shelter and how we can all help to ease the suffering. Attendance: 6 5th - 6th Grades - Daphne Courey & Anastasia Theodorou Today we welcomed Ryan to our class, Zander Kelly's friend for "bring a friend to Sunday school day." The class was blessed with a beautiful sermon that kicked off the Triodion by Bishop Alexios and on the meaning of the Gospel reading the Publican and the Pharisee. We discussed this further in Sunday school and how it related to their lives today. The children studied: St. Athanasios, as is well known, has expressed it in the classic words: God became man that man might become god. With the lower case god meaning that Jesus took on flesh and became man to show man how we may become like god by living our lives as Jesus did. They studied St Gregory the Theologian and his teachings, St Gregory the Theologian wrote: When I say God, I mean Father, Son and Holy Spirit. and the teachings of St. Basil the Great. St. Gregory and St. Basil were great friends. We had a test to review of the teachings of the previous weeks and the children were engaged and knew the answers to all. Well done! Attendance: 9 & 1 guest Orthodox Life/High School - Bill Orosz & Warren Baker We discussed Metropolitan Alexios homily about the Publican and the Pharisee as we begin the pre-lenten Triodion. We should continue our spiritual preparation for Great Lent. We discussed that the Orthodox Church s Weekly Prayer Cycle begins with Saturday Evening Vespers. We reflected on Psalm 1 (Blessed is the man ) and discussed that as Christians we are challenged to live in accordance with God s Law. We reminded the class that they will deliver their Oratorical presentations this coming Saturday, February 11th and that Mr. Michael Hawkins has not received final Oratorical submissions from all participants. Attendance: 16 7

8 MESSAGE FROM HIS EMINENCE METROPOLITAN ALEXIOS My Beloved Ones, I ask you to join me in giving glory to Almighty God, who once again allows us the opportunity to enter into the period that we call Triodion, in order for us to prepare ourselves to celebrate the Feast of Feasts that is Pascha. Every Sunday during the Triodion, the Church gives us messages that are meant to direct us in the proper manner of preparation for the upcoming Lenten period. Last week, if you remember, we began the four Sundays of Triodion with the parable of the Publican and the Pharisee. This reading was intentionally chosen to help us examine our hearts, as well as to clearly demonstrate the way we are meant to open a prayerful conversation with God: through humility. Everything we have comes from Above and is a gift from God. If we are rich, it is a gift from God! If we are intelligent, it is a gift from God! Even our poverty is a gift from God! We must use everything given to us in such a way that we consider our relationship with our Father, whom we know from this parable, listens to the person who humbles him or herself. That being said, the Church also understands that the Devil seeks to make us feel as though we are so sinful and bad, that we often go to extremes. Many times, we feel so pessimistic and broken that we believe God does not listen to us, or that we are unworthy to approach Him. That is why the Church has devoted this Sunday to the parable of the Prodigal Son. This Sunday, we will be especially reminded that no matter how bad we are, no matter what we have done, God is the Father of Love, and He is waiting for us to take the initiative to meet him in a humble way like both the Publican and as the Prodigal Son and ask to rejoin Him, in the Kingdom of Heaven. I humbly ask that you pray for us, the clergyman, as we pray for all the Orthodox faithful not only this week and the remainder of Triodion, but through Great Lent, as we approach the Great Homecoming: the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. +ALEXIOS Metropolitan of Atlanta 8

9 FROM THE CHANCELLOR S DESK How many of us will celebrate Valentine s Day with a little bit of bling!? The holiday that elevates the warmth of our love and the softness of our hearts also pushes us to give a gift of something cold and hard a diamond. Diamonds, we are continually reminded, are forever. That s why they are worthy of a significant financial investment. Diamonds are expensive because they are rare, elusive, and found only in tiny bits and pieces. Yet if you could travel 50 light years away from Earth, to star BPM 37093, located in the Centaurus constellation, you would arrive at Lucy a burned out sun, a white dwarf, whose entire central core is a planet-sized chunk of crystallized carbon a diamond 10 billion-trillion -trillion carats worth, to be precise. This space diamond was named Lucy after the Beatles' hit, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. By comparison, the largest earth-diamond, the Golden Jubilee Diamond, is 545 carats a sandal toe full of diamond sand on one of Lucy s dunes. Diamonds are a chosen and cherished gem because of their sparkle and glow. They ignite with a kind of inner fire when the light hits them. Unfortunately for Lucy, that means that the solid diamond core of that dwarf star is as unremarkable and unassuming as any other stone. You could take a drawer full of exquisite diamond gemstones and dump them in a drawer and without the gift of reflective light - you wouldn t know you had anything different than a box of rocks. The miracle of reflected light is what our goal in life is all about to become transfigured in our Lord Jesus Christ. As we begin Great & Holy Lent in a couple of weeks Monday, February 27th it is my prayer that the miracle of God s divine light will transform and transfigure each of our lives so we grow closer in union and harmony with Him. As we travel our 2017 lenten journey together, may the brilliance and purity of the light that illumines Jesus attract our attention. Transforming our lives in the image and likeness of our Lord is a central part of Orthodox theology. Just as He transfigured Himself and appeared to His disciples in divine glory on Mt. Tabor shortly before His last days leading up to His Crucifixion and Resurrection, I pray that we consider this miraculous event as proof that Jesus Christ is the light and glory coming from God, our Heavenly Father. Through Christ s voluntary passion for each of us, He assured us of the voluntary nature of His suffering and death for the salvation of the world. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ invites every human being to seek to attain spiritual transfiguration in order to be granted eternal life and everlasting paradise. May we take advantage of the opportunity to achieve this aim by considering what kinds of things we can do on a daily basis to show love, compassion, and charity to others so that our Lord judges us worthy of this gift. +Fr. George Tsahakis Chancellor 9

There will be lots to do, we need helping hands for a few hours. The March 9th meeting will be an outing to 'Exploration Tower' in Port Canaveral at the price of $ tax for seniors. You will be on your own for transportation. The museum-like tour is handson and the view from the Tower by floors, is truly scenic. There may be a price break for over 20 attending but $4.00 stated from their website, seems reasonable. Afterwards lunch will be at Zachary's Restaurant in Cape Canaveral, not far from the Tower. More info on all as the time gets closer, we will need a headcount for the Tower and restaurant well ahead of time. April will be a 'NO meeting' month since preparation for Easter/Pascha will be in order and families will be busy.
