And again, "Here am I, and the children God has given me. Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same nature, that through death he might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong bondage. For surely it is not with angels that he is concerned but with the descendants of Abraham. Therefore he had to be made like his brethren in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make expiation for the sins of the people. For because he himself has suffered and been tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted. The Reading is from The Gospel of Luke 1:24-38 In those days, Elizabeth the wife of Zacharias conceived and for five months she hid herself, saying, "Thus the Lord had done to me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men." But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 7 SUNDAY SCHOOL REPORT FOR March 18th ~ Vision Statement ~ To be a community of engaged and educated young Orthodox Christians. ~ Mission Statement ~ To encourage and foster spiritual growth of young people in our Orthodox Faith. Kindergarten - 1st grade: Donna Thomson Attendance: 2nd grade - 4th grade: Brenda Roman Attendance: 5th - 6th Grades: Daphne Courey & Terry Theodorou Attendance: 7th - 8th Grades: Fred Cannaverde We went over what a Creed means and how important the Nicene Creed is as a document that establishes our beliefs as Orthodox Christians. We then each read parts of the Creed with excitement rather than a boring monotone. This was to show that the Creed is something we should be excited about and should be stated emphatically like Rich Mullins did in his song Creed. We then listened to that song and asked the students if you unknowingly could replace the Creed with something. Pointed how today s music could easily influence us to not believe in the Creed and we used Bohemian Rhapsody as an example with it s major theme being Nothing really Matters. This was to show the students that; yes the Creed does matter. Attendance: 3 Orthodox Life/High School - Bill Orosz & Warren Baker Today we discussed Saint John Climacus the 7th century monk of St. Catherine s Monastery. His most famous book, The Ladder of Divine Ascent, was originally written for monastics but provides inspiration for us to avoid vice, practice virtues and to lead a God centered life. We also discussed two particular quotes about persistence and true repentance and their relevance for us in our daily lives. Do not be surprised that you fall every day; do not give up, but stand your ground courageously. Repentance is the renewal of baptism Attendance: 6 7

8 GREAT LENTEN FAITH STUDY SERIES Wednesday & Friday Evenings during Great Saint Katherine Hellenic Community Center 5965 N Wickham Rd., Melbourne, Florida Following the Pre-Sanctified Liturgy on Wednesday nights, we will be viewing and discussing a DVD curriculum from the Acton Institute called FOR THE LIFE OF THE WORLD: Letters to the Exiles. This study asks the question, Have you ever wondered what your salvation is actually FOR? Is it just to get to heaven? Is it so we can have a friend in Jesus? Is it even about us? This study is an invitation to explore the scandalous and beautiful story of God s plan for the whole world. The service begins at 6 PM each Wednesday. The study will follow around 7:30 PM. Following the video (~8 PM), we will also be going through the Gospel according to St. John the Beloved Disciple, Apostle, Evangelist and Theologian. (Bring your Orthodox Study Bible!) On Friday nights, we will begin with the Salutations to the Theotokos & Ever-Virgin Mary at 6 PM followed around 7:30 PM by another Acton Institute DVD entitled POV- ERTY CURE. This six-part series asks, How can we effectively alleviate poverty? Learn how we can enable and support people living in the developing world to create prosperity in order to provide for themselves, their families and their communities.
