But thou art the same, and thy years will never end." But to what angel has he ever said, "Sit at my right hand, till I make thy enemies a stool for thy feet?" Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to serve, for the sake of those who are to obtain salvation? Therefore we must pay closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For if the message declared by angels was valid and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard him. The Reading is from The Gospel of Mark 2:1-12 At that time, Jesus entered Capernaum and it was reported that he was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room for them, not even about the door; and he was preaching the word to them. And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him; and when they had made an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic lay. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "My son, your sins are forgiven." Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, "Why 3

4 does this man speak thus? It is a blasphemy! Who can forgive sins but God alone?" And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, "Why do you question thus in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Rise, take up your pallet and walk? But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins"-he said to the paralytic-"i say to you, rise, take up your pallet and go home." And he rose, and immediately took up the pallet and went out before them all; so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, "We never saw anything like this!" 10 The Bible & the Constitution Lenten Study Series on Wednesday St. Katherine Hellenic Community Center 5965 N Wickham Road - Melbourne, Florida Beginning on March 16 and running through April 20, 2016, on Wednesday nights during Great Lent, starting around 7:30 PM (following Pre-Sanctified Liturgy) we will be offering a series on An Orthodox Christian Perspective on the Bible offered by Warren Baker with Fr. Demetri Tsigas, followed by a viewing of the newest DVD series from David Barton and Rick Green, Constitution Alive! Warren is currently completing the St. Stephen s Certificate Program, a three-year correspondence course in Orthodox Christian studies. As part of his program, he needs to do a directed ministry project. This six-week course, An Orthodox Perspective on the Bible, is in fulfillment of that component of the certificate program. As someone who has studied the Bible from both a Protestant and an Orthodox perspective, Warren will share with us the uniqueness of the Orthodox view of Holy Scripture. This will be followed by two episodes each week from the Constitution Alive! series. Call the Church office or admin@saint-katherine.org if you are going to attend. 10

14 MESSAGE FROM HIS EMINENCE METROPOLITAN ALEXIOS My Beloved Ones, As we are in the second week of Great Lent, I would like to convey to the clergy, the monastics and all our congregations, the best wishes of His All- Holiness, Our Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. I am here in Constantinople, representing the church of America and especially the Metropolis of Atlanta, which is all of you, the clergy and the laity. This past week, which was the first week of Great Lent, all the Synodical Hierarchs had the pleasure of liturgizing during the Sunday of Orthodoxy with His All-Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew. And so we prayed for the Church of Constantinople, the Church of America, as well as all the autocephalous churches and Patriarchates throughout the world. I would like you to know that I prayed for all my clergymen, that they provide the spiritual means for all the faithful of the Metropolis of Atlanta. I especially prayed for our youth, for whom think of constantly; asking Almighty God, through the intercessions of the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary, whose Feast of the Annunciation we celebrate today, that peaceful minds and pure hearts be given to our youth. In this way, they will be able to observe and be critical of society, as they stay away from the Evil Spirit and his works. At the same time, I pray for the future of our youth; a future for which I depend upon them, since we have not managed to present to them a society in which they can live peacefully. The events which have taken place within the past week in Constantinople (where I was present) as well as in Brussels are the result of the way in which our society lives: in a manner far from God our Creator, and equally far from the intentions of the universe he gave to us. I would also like to share with you the meetings in which we have discussed the Orthodox Church in the world, including the church in America. In these meetings, we have discussed the Metropolis of Atlanta, and I have received the blessing of His All-Holiness regarding what we are doing at the Diakonia Retreat Center, which has now also entered into his private prayers. 14

15 The Diakonia Retreat Center represents a place where we the faithful can set aside time to face the reality of the society in which we live. It is through prayer and critical self-examination that we can alter ourselves, and our attitudes toward the world. With all these thoughts in mind, I ask you to pray for me as I travel, as I constantly think and pray for you and your endeavors. God Bless you, and God Be with us, as I look forward to next week s meetings with the Metropolitan Council, the Metropolis Philoptochos Board, as well as the Archons, the Youth Department, and all the ministries of our Holy Metropolis, all of which require the presence of the faithful. +ALEXIOS Metropolitan of Atlanta FROM THE CHANCELLOR S DESK Although postage stamps become more expensive, at least they have one attribute that most of us could emulate: they stick to one thing until they get there. Perhaps that s a reminder for us as we begin our third week s journey through Great Lent to struggle faithfully and persevere to overcome all obstacles that keep us from clinging to our Almighty God. - Let us pray and seek God s strength to reflect His light amidst the darkness of the tragedy in Brussels this week. - Let us witness and proclaim God s love and mercy each day, as if we were His angelic messengers on earth. - Let us look for God s wonders amidst our trials and challenges, and use them as opportunities to grow stronger and confident that God is with us always. - Let us proclaim the glory of God and His unfathomable power rather than focus on the pessimism of the world. - Let us denounce the seeds of doubt sown by Satan and his demonic spirits. - God s providential care is like a cup overflowing with the nectar of eternal hope. His light is like a torch that shines brighter than the sun. His truth shines forth and causes our fears to be plunged into darkness. Let us serve and assist Him today, tomorrow, and always. In closing, let us cling to St. Peter s words of encouragement in his First Letter, 4:13: But rejoice insofar as you are sharing Christ s sufferings, so that you may also be glad and shout for joy when His glory is revealed.
