Our Mission (job) is to grow our faith in Christ through love and respect with humility and forgiveness. NEW YEAR S RESOLUTION: SAY YES TO GOD & NO TO SIN! Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul & strength; and love your neighbor as yourself. (Luke 10:27) If you ve ever doubted that sin is crouching at the door, just look at the scandals coming out of Hollywood and Washington. So how do we defend ourselves? First, we must recognize temptation when it comes. Pray for what the Church Fathers call awareness (Nepsis) - and not just of the spiritual attacks but also of God s presence. Just say NO to saluting the car who just cut you off on the highway. Just say NO to that second doughnut or glass of wine if those are your passion (weakness or spiritual kryptonite). And for heaven s sake say YES to God by saying a prayer for the driver who just cut you off. As you struggle with your diet or other addictions, thank God for providing for you and ask for His help to say NO when you know you should. A powerful & simple prayer is Lord have mercy!, or the slightly longer full Jesus Prayer, Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner. If you want to take the great commandment above seriously, make time every day to pray, read the Bible and be still (& disconnect from social media/phone/internet!). Make coming to church on time (prepared and ready to pray in the pew before 10 AM) for liturgy your rule on Sunday NOT the exception. Strive to tithe from the time, talent & treasure God has entrusted to you to God s Holy Church AND to His Holy Image in your neighbor in need. THESE are the New Year s resolutions you absolutely need to make a firm foundation in your life so that you can enjoy a truly great reward in eternity. 3 Father s message P.S. Giving of your time and talent at the Greek Festival is a hugely important part of your stewardship. The Greek Festival falls during Great Lent this year on the Sunday of Orthodoxy weekend. Do your best to repent, seek humility, fast, pray and be charitable during this time of spiritual preparation. There a great many services you can avail yourself of: Saturday of Souls, Pre-Sanctified Liturgies on Wednesday nights and Salutations on Friday nights. On both Wednesday & Friday nights after services, we will offering a faith study. (See pages 4 & 5 for more info.) We have also had Lenten potluck dinners following the Wednesday & Friday night services. You can pick up new recipes while learning more about Orthodox Christianity and fellowshipping with your spiritual family and friends. Do your best to attend as often as possible. On March 8th we will have Attorney Ann Marie Geri speak on the 2nd Amendment which is about gun control, a question and answer period to follow. 4 GREAT LENTEN FAITH STUDY SERIES Wednesday & Friday Evenings during Great Saint Katherine Hellenic Community Center 5965 N Wickham Rd., Melbourne, Florida Following the Pre-Sanctified Liturgy on Wednesday nights, we will be viewing and discussing a DVD curriculum from the Acton Institute called FOR THE LIFE OF THE WORLD: Letters to the Exiles. This study asks the question, Have you ever wondered what your salvation is actually FOR? Is it just to get to heaven? Is it so we can have a friend in Jesus? Is it even about us? This study is an invitation to explore the scandalous and beautiful story of God s plan for the whole world. The service begins at 6 PM each Wednesday. The study will follow around 7:30 PM. Following the video (~8 PM), we will also be going through the Gospel according to St. John the Beloved Disciple, Apostle, Evangelist and Theologian. (Bring your Orthodox Study Bible!) On Friday nights, we will begin with the Salutations to the Theotokos & Ever-Virgin Mary at 6 PM followed around 7:30 PM by another Acton Institute DVD entitled POVERTY CURE. This sixpart series asks, How can we effectively alleviate poverty? Learn how we can enable and support people living in the developing world to create prosperity in order to provide for themselves, their families and their communities. Thank you so much to Claire, Despina, and Betty for all their help with this event. Thank you to all of you who attended and brought friends. Hope those of you that were sick feel better. This event is not meant to be a fundraiser, but an opportunity to celebrate our accomplishments and enjoy good company. Preliminary numbers show us making a bit over $300 profit. This is only because of the kindness of a couple of people. Our newest member and 50/50 raffle winner, Toni Tsiotis gave half of her winnings back to Philoptochos! Thank you, Toni! Our wonderful speaker, Dr. Carol Oseroff, had told us that she does not charge to present to educational or philanthropic organizations. We had prepared a check for her as a donation, but she refused to accept that as well. She said it was her pleasure to support those who help others. What a blessing! She forgot to bring her business cards, but she said that she would be happy to consult with anyone who heard her speak free of charge.
