The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 2:16-20 Brethren, knowing that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. The Reading is from The Gospel of Luke 8:41-56 At that time, there came to Jesus a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue; and falling at Jesus' feet he besought him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As he went, the people pressed round him. And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years and had spent all her living upon physicians and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind him, and touched the fringe of his garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased. And Jesus said, "Who was it that touched me?" When all denied it, Peter and those who were with him said, "Master, the multitudes surround you and press upon you!" But Jesus said, "Some one touched me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from me." And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace." While he was still speaking, a man from the ruler's house came and said, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more." But Jesus on hearing this answered him, "Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well." And when he came to the house, he permitted no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. And all were weeping and bewailing her; but he said, "Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping." And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But taking her by the hand he called, saying, "Child, arise." And her spirit returned, and she got 3

7 MESSAGE FROM HIS EMINENCE METROPOLITAN ALEXIOS HIS EMINENCE METROPOLITAN ALEXIOS` MESSAGE ON OXI DAY We are thankful to God for giving us important events in history which serve to remind us of the precious gifts of liberty and freedom. My dearly beloved, On Sunday we will commemorate the anniversary of "OXI Day" yet with all our celebrations, poems and songs, we will miss the point if we fail to realize that Oxi Day is more than a memory or a commemoration. On this day, the people of Greece chose the difficult and dangerous path: to fight and die so that others might have the chance to live in freedom. This was an act of love and self-sacrifice that epitomizes the highest ideals of our Hellenic Orthodox heritage: passion for justice and liberty, courage in adversity, unity in a common purpose, and willingness to sacrifice for the good of others. As Greek-Americans, we are proud to commemorate and honor the sacrifices and the courage of the Greek people. But we must not let Oxi Day be a quaint story from the past that has no meaning for us today. We also live in dangerous times - there are many challenges facing Greece, the United States and all who love freedom around the world. My beloved ones, we must teach our children, so that when the time comes and they are faced with evil and injustice when they are asked to support something that they know is wrong, they will be inspired by the example of those who sacrificed their lives in the sacred cause of liberty to respond with courage and love of God. May we never take for granted the freedoms we enjoy today, and may we realize that our commemoration of Oxi Day is also our public acknowledgement that Freedom is never free but is paid for by the suffering and sacrifice of brave men and women. Our responsibility today is to carry on their glorious tradition and to reply OXI! to tyranny and oppression. The willingness to confront evil and injustice, no matter what the cost -- -that is the true meaning of Oxi Day! 8 SUNDAY SCHOOL REPORT FOR OCTOBER 22 ~ Vision Statement ~ To be a community of engaged and educated young Orthodox Christians. ~ Mission Statement ~ To encourage and foster spiritual growth of young people in our Orthodox Faith. Kindergarten - 1st grade: Donna Thomson Attendance: 2nd grade - 4th grade: Brenda Roman Attendance: 5th - 6th Grades: Daphne Courey & Terry Theodorou This week we continued our course in Stewardship. We had 8 fully engaged students in class and we studied The Three T's. Like the children in the lesson, our kids decided to choose 3 Stewardship Projects to focus on this year. After discussing their own personal 3 T's, they came up with 5 ideas and chose 3: 1. Stewardship to Church - Once a month the class will go to the church for the last 10 minutes of our class and clean the pews of leftover bulletins and clean the icons by the candles. 2. IOCC Souper Bowl of Caring - Kids will organize a non-perishable food drive to donate to a local food bank. Food drive will begin Jan. 21st and end on Feb 4, Vasilopita Baking Class - Sunday Dec 31, 2017 The kids will learn how to bake Vasilopita and the cakes will be auctioned off at fellowship hour and the proceeds donated to the Sunday School program. March 25, Children will learn how to bake Andithoro two weeks prior to Palm Sunday under Jim's guidance. The Andithoro will be frozen and used during Holy Week. We are truly blessed with remarkable children! Attendance: 7th - 8th Grades: Fred Cannaverde We went over the 3rd Commandment, You shall not use the name of the Lord in vain, focusing on the meaning of the phrase "in vain" (needless, useless). We brainstormed all the ways we use God's name "on accident" instead of with purpose or with the wrong tone, instead of with reverence. We agreed to spend time this coming week changing our language or using His name with purpose (to praise, beseech, etc.). Attendance: 6 8

Intermediate 2 pm - 3 pm Both classes taught by Kostas Zervakos Paul Katlan will continue to teach conversational Greek.
