Kontakion - 1st Tone - p For our salvation You took flesh and You sanctified the Virgin s womb; You blessed the aged Simeon as You lay resting in his arms; and having come to save us all, O Christ our God, to these troubled times, bring Your lasting peace. Give strong and undaunted faith to all Your people, O only lover of mankind. The Reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 6:1-10 BRETHREN, working together with him, we entreat you not to accept the grace of God in vain. For he says, "At the acceptable time I have listened to you, and helped you on the day of salvation." Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. We put no obstacle in any one's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, tumults, labors, watching, hunger; by purity, knowledge, forbearance, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love, truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold we live; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything. The Reading is from the Gospel of Matthew 25:14-30 The Lord said this parable: "A man going on a journey called his servants and entrusted to them his property; to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them; and he made five talents more. So also, he who had the two talents made two talents more. But he who had received the one talent went and 3
4 dug in the ground and hid his master's money. Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, 'Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.' His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.' And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, 'Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more.' His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.' He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, 'Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not winnow; so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.' But his master answered him, 'You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sowed, and gather where I have not winnowed? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has the ten talents. For to every one who has will more be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth." As he said these things he cried out: "He who has ears to hear, let him hear!" 7 SUNDAY SCHOOL - January 27th ~ Vision Statement ~ To be a community of engaged and educated young Orthodox Christians. ~ Mission Statement ~ To encourage and foster spiritual growth of young people in our Orthodox Faith. VPK- Kindergarten: Hrysoula Mitropoulos & Donna Thomson Attendance: 1st - 3rd grades Jonna Myatt In our classroom we started learning about prayer and the importance of talking to God every day. We will be doing a few different lessons on prayer and then the students get to make their prayer boxes and take them home just in time for Lent! This time we read the book " WE PRAY" by Daniel Opperwall. It's another beautifully illustrated book published by Ancient Faith! We learned about things people do before and during prayer (the sign of the cross, lighting candles and incense, holding a prayer rope, standing, sitting, bowing their heads, closing their eyes, looking at icons) and I am also happy to report the kids are doing really well with the prayers we say in our prayer corner in the beginning of each class!!! Attendance: 9 4th - 6th grades: Daphne Courey & Anastasia Theodorou Attendance: 7th - 8th grades: Fred & Jackie Cannaverde 1/20/19 We opened with discussing 2 Corinthians 4:6&7 and how we are earthen vessels filled with God s light and how important it is for us to let his light shine. Explained what earthen vessels were and how they were used to hold wine and that is how Christians should be filled with His light. We then went on into the sacraments and went over how Baptism is the first sacrament that allows us to be part of the church. Baptism being important that is washes us clean from sin and allows us to partakers of the divine through Eucharist and Chrismation. 1/27/19 We opened with discussing Luke 19:1-19 the story of Zacchaeus. We tried to understand why Zacchaeus would run up into the tree to see Jesus and compared it seeing one s favorite sports or musical personalities and what they would do to see them. Pointed out how despised Zacchaeus was because he was a tax collector and tried to make a comparison that if Russia took over the United States that we would pay taxes to the Russians and that would have been 7
8 Zacchaeus. By having Jesus in his home would be considered awful by his neighbors but Zacchaeus s heart changed and he offered to pay back everything and give half of his possessions to the poor. We then went on to finish up our study of sacraments by explaining the importance of the Chrismation and being sealed by the Holy Spirit and participating in the Holy Communion. Discussed the importance of Confession and how instrumental it is for participation in Communion and our Christian life. Discussed how Marriage and Holy Orders are sacraments and how God gives us grace to continue in those life choices. We ended with discussion on Holy Unction and how it is given for the sick and dying but also how it is given during Holy Week to give us the spiritual fortitude to finish the Fast. Attendance: 7 High School/Orthodox Life: Warren Baker Attendance: "THE PRESSURE IS ON!" 2019 FESTIVAL One of the most important parts to a successful Festival is proper staffing of Volunteers. We CAN NOT be successful without our Volunteers! We need you! We know you don't hear it enough, but YOU ARE one of the most important parts to our success! We'd like to THANK YOU, in advance, for signing up again this year. Sign Up Sheets are in the Community center. Please remember to CLEARLY write or print your name and phone #, 8
9 Thursday, January 31, 2019 Statement on the Sanctity of Life The Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America affirms the sanctity of life based on the firm conviction that life begins at the moment of conception. The Assembly remains steadfast in its conviction that any interference in the development of life is a serious issue, and therefore it regularly participates in a variety of relevant events and also releases pertinent statements on the topic. While recognizing that there are rare but serious medical instances where mother and child may require extraordinary actions, the Assembly of Bishops is deeply concerned that the taking of innocent life through abortion has become an acceptable cultural norm. This phenomenon increasingly prevalent throughout contemporary societies was exacerbated by a recent law of the New York State Senate (Bill S.240). The Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America categorically denounces these adverse developments that allow for abortion, under certain unjustifiable circumstances, even within the third trimester of existence. The Assembly of Bishops further reminds the faithful that Christ is a beacon of hope in this challenging world. Accordingly, the Church is always prepared and willing to support women who are considering abortion to find alternative avenues to alleviate any burden, physical and spiritual. The Church is ever a mother loving, understanding, nurturing, praying, and protecting all human life. 9
