The Reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to Ephesians 2:4-10 BRETHREN God who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with him, and made us sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God: not because of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. The Reading is from The Gospel of Luke 18:18-27 At that time, a ruler came to Jesus and asked him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.' " And he said, "All these I have observed from my youth." And when Jesus heard it, he said to him, "One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." But when he heard this he became sad, for he was very rich. Jesus looking at him said, "How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go 3

through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." Those who heard it said, "Then who can be saved?" But he said, "What is impossible with men is possible with God." The best way to give thanks in all circumstances is to learn how to be thankful for lots during the good times. Then, when the bad times come, you have a great skill developed of always seeing the bright side! The kids took turns choosing small everyday objects from a box and shared why we should be thankful for them.each student also made a "gratitude box" to fill with notes at home this week. Attendance: 7 5th - 6th Grades - Daphne Courey & Anastasia Theodorou Today s Attendance: 7th - 8th Grade - Presvytera Eleni Attendance: Orthodox Life/High School: Bill Orosz and Warren Baker Today we continued our discussion of the Ecumenical Councils and introduced the Holy and Great Council, convened in June This historic event was the first time that the heads and representative bishops of all 14 Autocephalous Orthodox Churches gathered at a council; it had been in preparation for several decades. This Holy and Great Council of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church constitutes an authentic witness to faith in Christ in today s world. We began our study by exploring The Church: Body of Christ and the image of the Holy Trinity. We will continue to study and discuss this Council and the seven Ecumenical Councils throughout the school year. Attendance: 14 7

Dear Father Tsigas, What ever happened to Thanksgiving? Have you noticed how stores go from Orange and Black to Red and Green? More and more stores are opening on Thanksgiving Day, which means many intrepid shoppers will be standing in line for a "holiday deal" instead of sitting at the table with their families and giving thanks to God. Is it just me or has Thanksgiving just become a "speed bump" between Halloween and Christmas? Yet Thanksgiving is the only uniquely American holiday and it has such strong Biblical and historical roots. While other explorers and settlers celebrated Thanksgiving earlier on this continent, we most closely identify Thanksgiving with the Pilgrims. The Pilgrims were committed Christians from a single church in Scrooby, England who fled to Holland to find religious freedom before ultimately relocating to America. Their story, with all the instances of God's Providence, bears repeating again and again as we consider God's goodness and provision in our own lives this Thanksgiving. We have created a several free tools you can use, with several focusing on the Pilgrim's First Thanksgiving and on Thanksgiving in America. Click here for a Sermon Starter and accompanying PowerPoint (click to download) as well as a Bulletin Insert that can go with the message or be used as a stand alone. Just click to download, print double-sided, cut down the middle, and distribute. Also, click here for David Barton's history of Thanksgiving in America, which will provide you with some great material you may want to sprinkle in a sermon. We encourage you to use the Sunday before Thanksgiving (or the Sunday after) as a teaching time to help your people recall our spiritual heritage and encourage them to spend meaningful time reflecting on the goodness of God and giving Him thanks. Finally, I certainly want to express my heartfelt thanks to God for you, pastor, as one of over 40,000 who receive our s as a part of our Pastors Network. May your tribe continue to increase in number and impact! Standing for Faith, Family and Freedom, Dr. Kenyn M. Cureton Vice President for Church Ministries Family Research Council 8

Office of the Secretariat To the Most Reverend Clergy, Venerable Monastics and Devout Faithful of the Holy Orthodox Churches in the Americas: Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In a few days we will be celebrating Thanksgiving, one of the most beloved and anticipated American holidays of the year. Our senses will be filled with the sight of loved ones reuniting for the occasion, and the sound of grateful and humbled voices joining in prayer to our Heavenly Father for the blessings we enjoy in abundance. In giving praise to God we are also reminded that as He serves us through His love and mercy, we too can become like the Lord when we develop a servant s heart serving others with love, humility and compassion. It is the mission of International Orthodox Christian Charities, IOCC, as the humanitarian arm of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America, to respond to Christ s call and serve our neighbors in need. For nearly 25 years, IOCC has been sharing the compassion of the Orthodox faithful in close cooperation with the Orthodox Church. Through the generosity of supporters, IOCC has provided $580 million in relief to ease the suffering of families around the world including in Syria, The Holy Land, Greece, Serbia, Ethiopia, and here in the US. Every year, we set aside this special day among the Orthodox community as IOCC Sunday, and join in common purpose to lighten the burden of poverty stricken families, rebuild the lives of mothers and children fleeing war-torn homes, and restore the dignity of the elderly and disabled. We who are joined to Christ are called upon by St. Paul to believe in Him and do good works. Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and good hope by grace, comfort your hearts and establish you in every good word and work. (2 Thessalonians 2:16-17) We call on you, dear brothers and sisters in Christ, to fulfill our responsibility to give to those who are lacking in abundance of food, safe shelter, clean water or the means to provide for their family. Let us recommit ourselves by extending a helping hand in the name of Christ. During this blessed holiday season, may the LORD shine His mercy upon you 9

and your family, and bring peace into your homes and hearts. With paternal blessing and love in Christ, +Archbishop NICOLAE of the Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese of the Americas Liaison for IOCC from the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another. Romans 12:10 10

The following is a Thanksgiving message from Maria Keritsis, National Chairman of the National Forum of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians: Dear Church Musicians, Setting aside time to give thanks for one's blessings, along with holding feasts to celebrate a harvest, are both practices that long predate the European settlement of North America. According to historian James Baker, debates over where any "first Thanksgiving" took place on modern American territory are a "tempest in a bean pot". Historians have traced and documented thanksgiving celebrations in many locations in the early colonies. The first documented thanksgiving services in territory currently belonging to the United States were conducted by Spaniards and the French in the 16th century. Thanksgiving services were routine in what became the Commonwealth of Virginia< as early as 1607, with the first permanent settlement of Jamestown, Virginia< holding a thanksgiving in In 1619, 38 English settlers arrived at Berkeley Hundred< and that is proclaimed to be the first Thanksgiving. Americans commonly trace the Thanksgiving holiday to a 1621 celebration at the Plymouth Plantation< Plymouth_Colony>, where the settlers held a harvest feast after a successful growing season. Autumn or early winter feasts continued sporadically in later years, first as an impromptu religious observance, and later as a civil tradition. It was first proclaimed in 1789, by George Washington< en.wikipedia.org/wiki/george_washington>. 11

It has been celebrated as a federal holiday< Federal_holidays_in_the_United_States> every year since 1863, when, during the American Civil War< American_Civil_War>, President Abraham Lincoln< wiki/abraham_lincoln> proclaimed a national day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens," to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November.[3]< Thanksgiving_(United_States)#cite_note-NetINS_Showcase-AB-3> "that the day of our ships arrival at the place assigned for planation in the land of Virginia shall be yearly and perpetually kept holy as a day of thanksgiving to Almighty God< Where the first Thanksgiving celebration was held is immaterial. What is important is that we take time to give thanks to Him from whom all blessings flow. The Orthodox Christians give thanks to God at every service. How many times do we ask "Let us give thanks to the Lord," "We praise You, we bless You, we give thanks to You, and we pray to You, Lord our God." Here in America we celebrate the secular holiday with festivities, family gatherings and too much food. Yes we do thank God or a higher being for our material "things." As Orthodox Christians we should thank God daily for all of the blessings we enjoy. As we gather together with family and friends to give thanks for our blessings on this Thanksgiving Day let us especially remember those who struggle to survive yet do not lose hope or faith. I wish each of you and your family a blessed Thanksgiving. We have so much for which to be thankful. Maria 12

2017 Mission Team Opportunities - Kenya (Youth) and Indonesia (Teaching) All those at the Orthodox Christian Mission Center pray you have a blessed Thanksgiving! May the Lord grant you joy this holiday season. OCMC needs volunteers for the following 2017 short term mission teams: There is a team heading to Kenya March 29 April 10 that will participate in a Teen & Youth Mentorship Program at the St. Clement Orthodox School, which is close to the Orthodox seminary in Nairobi. The program will include children, teens and youth from the surrounding area and will seek to build self confidence and self awareness. The program will use indoor and outdoor activities to teach life skills and encourage positivity about life, as many of the youth come from destitute backgrounds. Participants should be well-grounded in the basic teachings of the Church and prepared to offer basic Orthodox catechism and religious education. Social workers, peer counselors, career advisers and spiritual leaders are needed. A teaching team will travel to Indonesia May 22 June 10 and will teach at the schools run by the Orthodox Church in Medan. Team members will teach catechism and the uniqueness of the Orthodox Faith to individuals who live in a region where Islam is the main religion. The team will especially focus on teaching about how Orthodoxy is a way of life meant to encompass every facet of life. The team will also help teach English at the St. Paul Theological School. Participants should be well-grounded in the basic teachings of the Church with a sound understanding of the Orthodox Faith and the ability to teach catechism.
