The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 6:13-20 BRETHREN, when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore to himself, saying, "Surely I will bless you and multiply you." And thus Abraham, having patiently endured, obtained the promise. Men indeed swear by a greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he interposed with an oath, so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible that God should prove false, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner shrine behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. The Reading is from The Gospel of Mark 9:17-31 At that time, a man came to Jesus kneeling and saying: "Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a dumb spirit; and wherever it seizes him it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid; and I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able." And he answered them, "O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me." And they brought the boy to him; and when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. And Jesus asked his father, "How long has he had this?" And he said, "From childhood. And it has often cast him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if you can do anything, have pity on us and help us." And Jesus said to him, "If you can! 4 mediately the father of the child cried out and said, "I believe; help my unbelief!" And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You dumb and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again." And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse; so that most of them said, "He is dead." But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, "Why could we not cast it out?" And he said to them, "This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting." And he would not have any one know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, "The Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him; and when he is killed, after three days he will rise." 7 SUNDAY SCHOOL REPORT FOR March 11th ~ Vision Statement ~ To be a community of engaged and educated young Orthodox Christians. ~ Mission Statement ~ To encourage and foster spiritual growth of young people in our Orthodox Faith. Kindergarten - 1st grade: Donna Thomson Attendance: 2nd grade - 4th grade: Brenda Roman Attendance: 5th - 6th Grades: Daphne Courey & Terry Theodorou Attendance: 7th - 8th Grades: Fred Cannaverde Today we discussed the Nicene Creed and opened with One of Us by Joan Osborne. The song goes on about what if God where one of us? The question was put forth did what if God became one of us and the answer was He already did and it was in the Creed in the statement: Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became man! We then went over the five themes of the Creed; God is the Creator, Jesus was fully God, Jesus became man, lived amongst us, died and arose on the third day, the Holy Spirit is with us and we are called to live our life in community. We colored the sections of the Creed to correspond with the theme. Next week we will work on memorizing it as well as understanding what the creed means to each of us and how to read it with meaning. 8 GREAT LENTEN FAITH STUDY SERIES Wednesday & Friday Evenings during Great Saint Katherine Hellenic Community Center 5965 N Wickham Rd., Melbourne, Florida Following the Pre-Sanctified Liturgy on Wednesday nights, we will be viewing and discussing a DVD curriculum from the Acton Institute called FOR THE LIFE OF THE WORLD: Letters to the Exiles. This study asks the question, Have you ever wondered what your salvation is actually FOR? Is it just to get to heaven? Is it so we can have a friend in Jesus? Is it even about us? This study is an invitation to explore the scandalous and beautiful story of God s plan for the whole world. The service begins at 6 PM each Wednesday. The study will follow around 7:30 PM. Following the video (~8 PM), we will also be going through the Gospel according to St. John the Beloved Disciple, Apostle, Evangelist and Theologian. (Bring your Orthodox Study Bible!) On Friday nights, we will begin with the Salutations to the Theotokos & Ever-Virgin Mary at 6 PM followed around 7:30 PM by another Acton Institute DVD entitled POV- ERTY CURE. This six-part series asks, How can we effectively alleviate poverty? Learn how we can enable and support people living in the developing world to create prosperity in order to provide for themselves, their families and their communities.
