7 SUNDAY SCHOOL - February 3rd ~ Vision Statement ~ To be a community of engaged and educated young Orthodox Christians. ~ Mission Statement ~ To encourage and foster spiritual growth of young people in our Orthodox Faith. VPK- Kindergarten: Hrysoula Mitropoulos & Donna Thomson Attendance: 1st - 3rd grades Jonna Myatt Attendance: 4th - 6th grades: Daphne Courey & Anastasia Theodorou Attendance: 7th - 8th grades: Fred & Jackie Cannaverde We revisited the Gospel reading for the day, Matt 25:14-30 the parable of the talents. We compared the talents to money and how one could take that money and use it to make more money so that the master would be happy with our work. We then compared the talents to gifts like singing or cooking. So if we were to sing in the closet or cook for only ourselves we would not be sharing our gifts to help the church to grow. We then went to the lesson on the New testament. Divided the New Testament into four parts; Gospels, History (Acts), Epistles (letters and Prophetic. This is helping the students to see the New Testament in a different way and to understand how important it is to see how the stories of Christ s life move into the history of the beginning of the church and then how the letters help us to live the Christian life and finally how the prophetic book gives us a glimpse of heaven. 8 Drive Thru the New Testament Lenten Study Series on Wednesday St. Katherine Hellenic Community Center 5965 N Wickham Road, Melbourne, Florida Our Lenten Study will take us through all the places we read about this past Fall in our Orthodox Study Bibles. On Wednesday nights during Great Lent, beginning on March 13 and running through April 17, 2019, starting around 7:00 PM (following Pre-Sanctified Liturgy which begins at 5:30 PM and our Lenten Potluck that follows), we will be offering the latest series from Dave Stotts and the Drive Thru History team. This time out Dave will travel to all the places mentioned in the New Testament beginning with Jerusalem and ending with Patmos. This is an 18-part series that we will cover with three ½ hour episodes at a time each Wednesday evening (thus the earlier start time for the Pre-Sanctified Liturgy). We encourage you all to bring a Lenten dish for our Potluck following services. Once everyone has got their food and found a seat, we will begin playing the video. Dave brings his characteristic humor, archeological, historical and biblical knowledge to life as he visits all these Christian sites, (many of which have Orthodox churches built on them). 10 Scout Sunday - February 10, 2019 To the Faithful Orthodox Christians and Scouts: We now observe another Scout Sunday where we pause from our busy routine to remember the many contributions that the Scouting Community has made to make our world a better place to live. It is fitting that our churches especially remember the Scouts as many of our Parishes are home to Scout Troops. Answering the call to have Duty to God, our churches are an integral part of what makes Scouting such a valuable institution. Always remembering that A Scout is Reverent, these young men and their leaders offer a path to holiness that is grounded in the good works and learned skills that can only be found in Scouting. I remember my youth and being a part of Troop 19 in Mahaffey, Pennsylvania and how much I gained personally by being a part of that troop. I remember the summers spent at Camp Mountain Run, outside DuBois, Pennsylvania where we honed our skills of living in the woods. Living here in Alaska now, those skills come in very handy some times. There is not a time that goes by when I find the need to tie a knot, or rig a line, or other outdoor activity that I do not harken back to what I learned so long ago. In short, I am a more confident person today thanks to Scouting. In 1960, the Standing Conference of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the Americas [SCOBA] endorsed Scouting as viable part of their youth ministry and created the Eastern Orthodox Committee on Scouting [EOCS]. This was the first agency created by SCOBA and presently an agency under The Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the Americas. 10

The EOCS Executive Board encourages all Orthodox Churches to recognize and celebrate this Scout Sunday on February 10, 2019 even if their church does not sponsor a Scout unit.

I am sure there are Scouts in nearly every Parish in the United States. Living in a world that constantly seems to want to attack the family and the ideals of Scouting, either directly or indirectly, I find our Scouting troops to be a good place to support the ideas of Reverence and Duty to God. Anyone interested in their good work can go to the EOCS website at to learn more about Scouting and the Orthodox Church. This year will be the World Scout Jamboree at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia from July 23. Once again the EOCS will be sponsoring an Orthodox booth, holding services and meetings with Orthodox Scout from around the country and around the world. I would encourage all Orthodox Scouts to attend and be involved at the Jamboree. Go Red Campaign The National Philoptochos Cardiac Committee established the National Philoptochos Heart Health Awareness Program to promote awareness of the American Heart Association's GO RED CAMPAIGN. Across America, the red dress is instantly recognized as a symbol of women's empowerment to improve their heart health. The first Sunday in February has been designated nationally as " GO RED SUNDAY" All Philoptochos members across the country are encouraged to wear red to church as a symbol of support for this program and to promote awareness of heart disease in women. Gifts for women that you received today are sponsored by Philoptochos. 11
