1 THE ANNUNCIATION GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH 12th Sunday of Matthew/After-feast of the Dormition/Andrew the General & Martyr & his 2,593 soldiers During the reign of Maximian, about the year 289, Antiochus the Commander-in-Chief of the Roman forces sent Andrew with many other soldiers against the Persians, who had overrun the borders of the Roman dominion. Saint Andrew persuaded his men to call upon the Name of Christ, and when they had defeated the Persians with unexpected triumph, his soldiers believed in Christ with him. Antiochus, learning of this, had them brought before him. When they confessed Christ to be God, he had Andrew spread out upon a bed of iron heated fiery hot, and had the hands of his fellow soldiers nailed to blocks of wood. Antiochus then commanded some thousand soldiers to chase the Saints beyond the borders of the empire. Through the instructions of Saint Andrew, these soldiers also believed in Christ. At the command of Antiochus, they were all beheaded in the mountain passes of the Taurus mountains of Cilicia. Rev. Fr. Joseph Gingrich, Parish Priest August 19, 2018 Altar Boys All Available Ushers On Duty 2 Epistle Reading I Corinthians 15:1-11 Gospel Reading Matthew 19:16-26 HYMNS AFTER THE LITTLE (GOSPEL) ENTRANCE TODAY S DIVINE LITURGY HYMNS AND SCRIPTURE READINGS: RESURRECTIONAL APOLYTIKION IN THE THIRD MODE Let the Heavens rejoice; let earthly things be glad; for the Lord hath wrought might with His arm, He hath trampled upon death by death. The first-born of the dead hath He become. From the belly of Hades hath He delivered us, and hath granted great mercy to the world. APOLYTIKION FOR AFTERFEAST OF THE DORMITION IN THE FIRST MODE In giving birth, thou didst preserve thy virginity; in thy dormition, thou didst not forsake the world, O Theotokos. Thou wast translated unto life, since thou art the Mother of Life; and by thine intercessions dost thou redeem our souls from death. DISMISSAL HYMN FOR THE ANNUNCIATION IN THE FOURTH MODE Today is the crown of our salvation and the revelation of the Mystery that is from all eternity. The Son of God becomes the Son of the Virgin, and Gabriel announces this grace. Let us join Him and cry out to the Theotokos: Hail, you who are full of grace, the Lord is with you.
SEASONAL KONTAKION IN THE SECOND MODE Neither the grave nor death could contain the Theotokos, the unshakable hope, ever vigilant in intercession and protection. As Mother of life, He who dwelt in the ever-virginal womb transposed her to life. EPISTLE READING PRIEST: Let us attend. READER: Sing praises to our God, sing praises. Verse: Clap your hands, all you nations. PRIEST: Wisdom READER: The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 15:1-11. PRIEST: Let us attend. READER: 1 Now I declare to you, brethren, the Good News which I preached to you, which also you accepted, in which you also stand. 2 And you are saved by it, that is if you hold firmly to the word which I preached to you. Otherwise, you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you, first of all, what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Kephas, then to the Twelve. 6 After that, he appeared to over five hundred brethren at once, most of whom remain [alive] until now, but some have also fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8 and last of all, as to the child born at the wrong time, he appeared to me also. 9 Indeed, I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the Church of God. 10 But by the grace of God, I am what I am. His grace which was bestowed on me was not in vain, but I worked more than all of them yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. 11 It does not matter whether is it I or they: this is what we preach, and so you believed. MATTHEW 19: Behold, a man came to him and asked, Good teacher, what good thing shall I do in order to have eternal life? 17 Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good? No one is good but one, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments. 18 The man asked him, Which ones? Jesus replied, You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness. 19 Honor your father and mother; and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 20 The young man then said to him, All these things I have observed from my youth! What do I still lack? 21 Jesus replied, If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have, give it to the poor, and you will have [a] treasure in heaven. Then come, and follow me! 22 But when the young man heard these words, he went away sad because he was a person with great possessions. 23 Jesus said to his disciples, Amen I say to you: it will be hard for someone who is rich to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven! 24 Indeed, I tell you that it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of God. 25 When his disciples heard this, they were extremely astonished and said, Who then can be saved? 26 Gazing at them, Jesus answered, By human resources, this is impossible, but with God all things are possible! Contact Jim Peers directly (peers.james@gmail.com). -MEMBER IN GOOD STANDING. One aspect that is often overlooked in being a member in good standing is that Orthodox Christians must receive Holy Communion at least once per year to be a member of the Church. We should strive to live in such a way whereas we can receive Holy Communion at every Divine Liturgy we attend. To
4 receive Holy Communion once a year is the minimum requirement. It is far better to do the maximum and eat and drink at every Lord s Supper we attend. If something is preventing us from receiving Holy Communion regularly we should all ask ourselves, What can I do to change this in my life? And then take action. One must also regularly attend Divine Liturgy and be a steward of a parish current in one s obligation. At an absolute minimum one must receive Holy Communion once per year. -BLESSING OF ANIMALS. The Blessing of Animals will take place on the feast of St. Mamas Sunday, September 2, at 5:00 pm outside of the church. Please bring your pets. ANNOUNCEMENTS WINE CHEESE AND CHURCH: THE CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS TOUR Parish Council invites you to join fellow parishioners as we tour our building and grounds on Friday August 24th. 5 If you are visiting our Parish, please fill out the "Visitor Information Card," located in the Narthex, and hand it to one of the Welcome Committee greeters. You are welcome to come forward to receive a piece of antidoron (blessed bread) at the conclusion of the service and join us in the Memorial Center for our Fellowship Hour following the Divine Liturgy. If you are a newcomer to our Parish, please introduce yourself to our priest. He would be most happy to schedule a time to meet with you and discuss the ministries and fellowship opportunities available within our Parish. For Orthodox Christians GUIDELINES FOR RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION When preparing to receive Holy Communion, please remain quietly in your pews until an Usher/ Parish Council Member directs you to approach from the center aisle. Your prayerful attention helps sustain the solemnity of the Divine Liturgy for those praying the "Prayers of Preparation and following Holy Communion the "Prayers of Thanksgiving. You will find these prayers in the burgundy Divine Liturgy book located in the pew backs. The Prayers of Preparation begin on page 29 and the Prayers of Thanksgiving begin on page 40. Please allow the acolyte to place the Holy Communion Cloth beneath your chin. This ensures that no particle of the Eucharist falls from your lips. Recite your baptismal name aloud; open your mouth wide; and close your mouth as the Communion Spoon enters your mouth. After receiving Holy Communion, blot your lips on the cloth and return to your pew by the side aisles. You will find an acolyte offering you a bowl of antidoron from which you should take a single piece to ensure you consume all traces of Holy Communion. For Non-Orthodox Christians We welcome to our worship those Christians not fully united with us (canonically). It is a consequence of the sad divisions of Christianity that we cannot extend a general invitation to receive Holy Communion. Orthodox Christians believe that the Eucharist is an action of the celebrating community signifying a oneness in faith, life, and worship. Reception of the Eucharist by Christians not fully united with us would imply a oneness which does not yet exist and for which we must all pray.
