3 The presence of God is alive in all of us, and Lent is a time to recognize that extraordinary presence in all we perceive as ordinary in our everyday lives. Lent is a journey with a purpose, and that purpose is to seek, honor, and come into closer relationship with God. The season of Lent is a journey to our very core, to the center of our hearts where God already dwells. We seek to find God in order to come into His presence to simply rest in Him, to be transformed by His love, and to accept the challenge of the mission He has called us to through the life of his beloved Son. We embrace the presence of God by traveling through Lent with a spirit of prayer and quiet watchfulness, by becoming free of unnecessary burdens, possessions and behaviors. We prepare ourselves along the way to enter into God s presence, with our hearts and spirits eager for his loving embrace. When we recognize that our lives are a spiritual pilgrimage we embrace the One whose life was given over totally for ours. We enter into life with Christ by walking along the life of Christ. We begin our spiritual pilgrimage by getting to know Jesus sitting at His feet, listening, and being drawn in slowly and quietly. We set aside time to be in His company and give Him the chance to enter into our busy lives. We accompany Jesus as He walks toward Calvary, along the stony pathways of Jerusalem to the cross. Our salvation was His mission, meant to draw us more closely to Himself and into the presence of the Father. And this is now our mission. We are called to carry His extraordinary presence to all we meet in our ordinary lives, to carry him along with us as we continue our individual journeys. There are many opportunities to briefly step outside the noise and busyness of our lives, enter into the silence of our hearts, and be drawn into the m y s t e r y o f E m m a n u e l G o d with us. In this way, we come to know that which we already believe the Promise, Jesus. All along the way, there are guideposts to help us stay focused, to inspire and enliven our faith, to give us strength for the journey that we are all called to live to carry on the mission of Christ in our lives. Our parish is providing wonderful opportunities to support and enhance your spiritual pilgrimage as you accompany Jesus on His journey toward Calvary. Every day during Lent, live your life within the life of Jesus, and purposefully, intentionally act with that mindset, admitting that this season of grace is not ordinary life if we take our faith seriously. Plan to participate in parish events, but most especially to enter into Jerusalem with our Lord, coming more deeply into God s presence during our parish mission at the start of Holy Week. Join us February 22 through March 25, for a 33- day preparation for Marian Consecration. For six weeks, we'll individually read about and reflect on four great Marian giants: Saint Louis de Montfort, Saint Maximilian Kolbe, Blessed Mother Teresa, and Saint Pope John Paul II. They'll teach us the secrets to drawing closer to the Heart of Jesus through the Heart of Mary. In weekly meetings, on Thursdays at 7 pm in The Upper Room, we'll share our insights within our small group, then watch a 30- minute video by popular author and speaker, Father Michael Gaitley, MIC, who brings our individual reflections and group experience into a clear and livable focus. Contact Julie Ritts, FOLLOWING JESUS Our Spiritual Book Group has been journeying through The Priority of Christ, to The Life of Christ, and is now beginning Jesus, a Pilgrimage, by James Martin SJ. Consider this book for your Lenten reading material, as you will pilgrimage through Biblical locations in the Holy Land and glean the impact of Jesus in a journey through the Gospels. Cardinal Timothy Dolan calls it part travel guide, part spiritual reflection, and part Scripture study and altogether delightful. Our book group discussions are full of insightful findings, awakenings of thought, spiritual deepening, and fuller knowledge of the Gospels. This book offers so much to talk about and it is a easy read. Discussion will take place March 6 at 7 pm in Room 10. Join us! WHAT IS HOLINESS? How do I get there? Join Father King and guest speakers on Wednesday evenings as we take a look at spirituality and various Catholic approaches to spiritual growth. Schools of Spirituality examines several of the many approaches to prayer and holiness within the Church, including Franciscan, Dominican, Benedictine, Salesian, and Carmelite. 5 LENTEN APPEAL DONATE NOW The Bishop s Annual Lenten Appeal is underway! Stop by Menniti Hall after Masses to make your pledge even if you have taken advantage of online pledging at bishops-annual-lenten-appeal. BISHOP GAINER WRITES: Lent is often seen as a time of penance and self-sacrifice as in giving up something for Lent. These are worthy practices, yet Lent is also a time to reflect upon the magnanimous love of God for each one of us in sending His own divine Son to suffer and die for us so that we might be freed from sin and death. This is why the Cross of Christ will always be a symbol of divine love both to the world and for each one of us as individuals. Christ came into the world because the bonds of love between God and humankind had been broken by sin.... Jesus died so that we might have freedom from sin and have life eternal. He came to save the world through the power of love. Our whole Lenten season is a continuous reflection on the power of Christ s love for us and how we are to return that love to Him.
