Sometimes it is difficult to discern whether prayer has been answered; it may be difficult for us to see it. Sometimes the answer is immediate and obvious. (continued inside) Bradley Fischer is a seminarian at Mount Saint Mary's Seminary. A Lutheran convert to the Catholic faith, he is a graduate of J.P. McCaskey High School, Lancaster; Elizabethtown College; and Widener University School of Law. He was a lay minister for Catholic Campus Ministry at Millersville University for eight years and discerned with the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal for two years prior to being accepted as a seminarian for the Diocese of Harrisburg in 2014.

3 Answered Prayer (continued from cover) A number of years ago, I was facing several life challenges of a personal and financial nature, all of which seemed to come crashing down at once. I was faced with loss of my family, bankruptcy, and foreclosure. One day, sitting alone in the faculty bay at Harrisburg Area Community College, I just looked skyward and prayed: I just can't take anymore. Immediately, a student from one my classes came into the faculty bay looking for me. He had just come from a meeting with his advisor. His girlfriend had broken up with him and he was also conflicted over what his major should be, or whether he should be in college at all. The advisor had listened to him briefly and then recommended some books to read about career choices. He really just needed someone he could talk to who would listen and relate. I was moved that he thought to come to me. I had no magic answers for this young man, but after we talked at length, he seemed to feel better about moving forward and dealing with the challenges he faced. When he left, I knew that that was the answer to my prayer. In my hour of need. When I needed someone. I was sent someone who needed me. So that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console... to be understood, as to understand... to be loved, as to love. Lord, make me an ins trument of your peace, Where ther e is hatred, let me s ow lov e; where ther e is i njury, pardon; where ther e is doubt, faith; where ther e is despair, hope; where ther e is darkness, l ight; where ther e is sadness, joy; O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be cons oled as to cons ol e; to be understood as to understand; to be lov ed as to lov e. For it is in giving that we receive; i t is i n pardoni ng that we ar e pardoned; and i t is in dy ing that we are born to eternal li fe.

4 FIRST PENANCE WORKSHOP will be held on Saturday, February 4, from 9:00 AM.-12:30 PM. All students should enter the building using the Seton Center Entrance near the Café. MARRIAGE DISCUSSION AT SPIRITSWORD Bill Malay, MA, CSD, executive director with Day Seven Ministries, will lead a guided discussion about marriage at the January 29 session: What is Real Marriage and Why Did God Institute It? The session will include some discussion about gay marriage and civil vs. church marriage. SpiritSword meets Sundays at 10:15 am in the Office Conference Room. All are welcome. OUR PARISH WILL HOST THE CATHOLIC CHARITIES SOUPER BOWL SOUP SALE on February 4 and 5. This event will feature homemade soup from members of our parish and other parishes throughout the Diocese. The Soup Sale will be in Menniti Hall after all Masses. Your donations will support the shelters maintained by Catholic Charities. MORNING FAITH MATTERS JOIN US! On Wednesday, February 1, at 9:30 am in the Bayley Conference Room, we continue our program, The Bible and the Virgin Mary. This week, we will focus on the connections between Mother Mary and the Ark of the Covenant in the Old Testament. This will lead us directly to why theologians refer to Mother Mary as the Ark of the New Covenant through Christ Jesus. The Bible and the Virgin Mary, a Scripture study based on Dr. Scott Hahn s book, Hail Holy Queen, teaches Catholics how Marian doctrine and devotion are firmly rooted in Scripture, and answers common objections from non-catholics.
