1 February 5, 2017 The Catholic Charismatic Renewal By Alex Bogdanoff The modern Catholic Charismatic Renewal as it exists today is the outgrowth of a retreat held in February 1967 at Duquesne University. Many of the faculty and students present experienced a movement of God s Spirit called being baptized in the Holy Spirit. A Mass of Celebration In celebration of the 50th birthday of the modern Catholic Charismatic Renewal, Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish will host a Charismatic Mass on February 18 at 5 pm, (the Vigil Mass for Sunday), with contemporary music by the Catholic group, Breakthrough. Mass will be preceded by Eucharistic Adoration in the chapel from 3:30-4:30, and a time of praise and worship from 4:30-5:00 in the church. All are invited. Interestingly, on the Saturday of the retreat, the plumbing in the house (called The Ark and the Dove ) stopped working and participants decided to end the gathering but not before celebrating the birthdays of several of the attendees. During this celebration, people began to feel drawn to the campus chapel. As they entered, one by one they walked into a profound atmosphere they described as God s glory, where their bodies trembled, some cried, some were filled with an inexpressible joy manifested by laughing, and all fell to their knees praying in surrender to God s will. They found themselves prostrate on the floor, with their shoes off. Then... the water again began running to the retreat house! This dramatic movement of the Holy Spirit called the participants into a deeper personal relationship with Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, as they experienced God s love in a profound, personal way. This fire quickly spread to graduate students and professors at the University of Notre Dame and others serving in campus ministry in Lansing, Michigan. It continued to spread so that, as of this date, the Catholic Charismatic Renewal exists in over 238 countries in the world, having touched over 120 million Catholics in its 50-year existence. The movement, recognized by the Church, has been affirmed by Popes Paul VI, John Paul II, Benedict, and Francis. In addition to calling one to a deep relationship with Jesus Christ, another hallmark of the Catholic Charismatic movement is the manifestation of the (continued inside)

3 A note from Monsignor King Our parish is honored to host this Mass to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the modern Charismatic movement in the Catholic Church. I received the baptism in the Spirit while a student at Saint Charles Seminary in Philadelphia, and for many of my years in the priesthood have been (continued from cover) charisms or gifts of the Holy Spirit, including praying in tongues, prophecy, speaking in tongues, and healing. These are signs that follow the baptism in the Holy Spirit experienced at Duquesne (also see 1 Cor 12,14). This non-sacramental baptism is seen as releasing the gifts which were given during sacramental baptism. Many identify the baptism in the Spirit with John the Baptist s reference to Jesus, I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming... He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire (Luke 3:16). To foster this experience, those from the original retreat compiled a seven-week teaching and prayer series called Life in the Spirit Seminar, which continues to this day throughout the world. Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish held this seminar in As the Holy Spirit is encountered in this baptism, one discovers a deeper prayer life, greater appreciation of the Mass and of the sacraments of the church, devotion to the Blessed Mother (who was with the Apostles at Pentecost), a call to evangelism, and Scripture reading becomes more alive in their lives. I AM CONVINCED that this (Charismatic) movement is a very important component of the entire renewal of the Church This was my own spiritual initiation, so I can understand all these charisms. They are all part of the richness of the Lord. I am convinced that this movement is a sign of his action. Saint John Paul II YOU, CHARISMATIC RENEWAL, have received a great grace from the Lord. You were born of the will of the Spirit as a current of grace in the Church and for the Church. This is your definition: a current of grace. Pope Francis Parishioner Alex Bogdanoff serves as a 7th/8th grade CCD teacher and prayer group leader. He is also a Candidate to the Permanent Deaconate for the diocese. Alex and his wife, Sally, serve as Pastoral Care volunteers at Holy Spirit Hospital. They have four children. part of Charismatic prayer groups. The 5pm Mass on Saturday, February 18, will be celebrated in a way that promotes the use of the charisms or gifts of the Holy Spirit. There will be praying in tongues at several points during the Mass (including before the Collect, during the elevation of the Body and Blood of Christ, and in the time of thanksgiving after Holy Communion). Some may find this approach to Catholic spirituality very different from what they are used to. It is important to understand this point, so that if you believe that experiencing this spiritual movement will be unsettling to you, you may choose to attend another Mass that weekend. Please understand that this is an authentically Catholic spiritual movement, but as is the case with many movements within the Church this approach to spirituality touches the hearts and souls of some more than others.

On Wednesday, February 8, at 9:30 am in the Bayley Conference Room, we continue our program, The Bible and the Virgin Mary. This week, we are talking about dogma: In particular, we re going to focus on the dogma of Mother Mary s perpetual virginity, one of the oldest defined dogmas of the Catholic Church. We re also going to deal with the common claims that Our Savior, Jesus, had brothers and that Saint Joseph and Mother Mary had marital relations after the birth of Jesus, the Christ. The Bible and the Virgin Mary, a scripture study based on Dr. Scott Hahn s book, Hail Holy Queen, teaches Catholics how Marian doctrine and devotion are firmly rooted in Scripture, and answers common objections by non-catholics. 5 OUR 5TH GRADE CCD STUDENTS have this great project each year they grow the Job s Tears plants over the summer, and then around this time in CCD, they use the beads to make rosaries! Gainer will be celebrating Holy Mass commemorating World Day of the Sick at the Geisinger Medical Center's Hood Memorial Building in Danville on Saturday, February 11, at noon. All are invited. This day was established by Pope Saint John Paul II and first celebrated in He chose the feast day of Our Lady of Lourdes, as many pilgrims visit the Lourdes each year in hopes of physical and spiritual healing. World Day of the Sick is a special time dedicated to remembering and to pray for those suffering of any illness and also their families.
