1 April 29, 2018 Vine: Him branches: us L ast week we were reminded that we have a Good Shepherd in whose faithful care we can trust always. This week, we are reminded that we the sheep, the branches, the body of Christ also have responsibilities to God and to each other. Over the next several weeks, we ll be hearing from parishioners and from those in the wider Church as we consider how we can support our sisters and brothers at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in our many and varied life and personal situations to strengthen each other in faith and service.

3 What Is It That You Need? By Donna Nebistinsky Pastoral Assistant ost often we refer to a M need as something that we literally can t live without food, air, water. But as an educator in my previous life I learned the importance of identifying other types of need. In order for children to grow and progress there is a basic need to feel safe; to know there is someone whom they can trust. Most importantly there is a need to feel included, and above all loved. All of us at some level have a need for intimate relationships and friendships. We desire a sense of connection with others whom we can trust and depend on, and who will accept us as we are. No matter how much we enjoy our time alone; we have a level of desire to be part of a group, to belong to something greater. Life experiences good or bad change our levels of need, and we find ourselves looking for those connections in order to regain a sense of balance. In Philippians 4:19, we read My God will fully supply whatever you need, in accord with his glorious riches in Jesus Christ. In the Gospel reading we heard last weekend, we were reminded that there is one flock, one shepherd. In other words, we do not come to God alone. Our worship draws us into the community of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish. God has given us everything we need, provided us with these glorious riches, right here within our parish family. One of my most important needs is to continue to act in a mothering role. I have two amazing sons with whom I share a very close bond. And while I know that mom will always somehow be needed, it isn t quite the same now that they are both grown and married. I have a beautiful grandson and a granddaughter due in just a few weeks, and although we ll be together frequently, sometimes it just isn t often enough. Within the parish community, I have become part of another family couples the same ages as my own kids, several with children who call me Miss Donna and fill my heart with joy each time I see them at Mass. My parish family fills the need for me to respond to them as a mother and grandmother would. Of course, this is just one small example of how the parish can meet one of my needs as well as those of all our members. Ours is a large community, spread across several geographic locations, and we can be disconnected except for our times of worship. One way to better bring us together with each other is through small groups an idea that is currently being discerned and being slowly implemented to draw us together into something greater. But, in order to create the groups which are most needed, we need to know what your needs are! his weekend, we introduce T a bulletin series exploring issues related to different vocations and states of life, and the ways in which we can encourage and support each other. Many of us feel we really don t have any serious needs, or at least anything that we can t take care of on our own. But again, Jesus calls us to community as that one flock to be part of something greater as we help each other along the way. By reading through the upcoming issues, I d like to challenge you to examine your own needs as we move forward. Think about them, pray over them, and then share them along with ideas you might have about how we can work together as one flock to encourage and support each other.
4 NEXT SUNDAY we ll be kicking off our Baby Bottle Blessing campaign to benefit Morning Star Pregnancy Services work to save babies from abortion. Look for the Baby Bottle display in Menniti Hall. Ahhh, one of those easy Sunday dinners coming up. Just stop by Menniti Hall after Masses (while supplies last) and pick up an excellent meal. Our Knights of Columbus barbeque so you don t have to! The menu includes 1/2 chicken, baked potato, applesauce, roll & butter, and sour cream. Cost is $8 for one meal, $15 for two, and $7 each when you purchase three or more. 5 WE VE OBSERVED our Parish s 40th anniversary year in a number of different ways in past months, including our kickoff Ice Cream Social, Shall We Dance, our Washington Pilgrimage and family Seder, our all-ages Faith on Fire Mission and more! This closing event is a chance for the adults in the parish to get together for a selection of fine hors d oeuvres and a concert of Broadway music presented by professional level performers. We don t do a lot of events like this, so take advantage of this special opportunity to enjoy the company of others in a relaxed social setting. Tickets are $30 each (so no funds come from parish coffers!) ; they're available this weekend and next in Menniti Hall and Connections Corner. Visit for details! PARISH PILGRIMAGE NEXT SATURDAY We re carpooling! If you need a ride, or can offer a ride, meet in the church parking lot at 12:45 pm in order to travel together on pilgrimage to the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton our parish patron and the first American-born saint. If you are traveling on your own, expect to see us around 2-ish. The day is meant for all ages, with things to do and see indoors and out. Learn how the Daughters and Sisters of Charity served those in need during the Civil War. Read personal accounts of the sisters, see where they served, and view panoramic images and artifacts. The Shrine museum also has many exhibits about Saint Elizabeth, including letters in her own hand. We are blessed to have so much history of our patron so close few churches have such a resource nearby. To end this day of gratitude for our 40th anniversary, Monsignor King will celebrate Mass in the Basilica at 4 pm. Questions? This is a short read so a great entry point to the group! The book looks at the biblical story of David, Israel's desire for a king, David's attitude toward Saul, and David's kingdom. Moving through the book, the reader learns the significance of music and song in worship. TRAINING FOR EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS At the request of the Diocese, Deacon David L. Hall will be leading a training session for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion here at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish on Wednesday, June 6, at 7 pm in the Bayley Room. This is open to new ministers as well as to ministers who are renewing their mandate. Contact: DeaconHall@steas.net. FAITH MATTERS MORNING JOIN US! On Wednesday, May 2, at 9:30 am, in the Bayley Room, we continue our spring Divine Mercy study program, The Second Greatest Story Ever Told. We ll learn that, in a certain sense, God s School of Trust culminates in church history with the mission of Pope Saint John Paul II as he proclaims the message of Divine Mercy to the world, in this week s segment, Proclaim This Message. We ll take an indepth look at the historical and spiritual events that resulted in the 2002 dedication of Krakow s Divine Mercy Shrine, the divine confirmation gracefully bestowed upon us by the great saint s death following the 2005 vigil mass of Divine Mercy, and we ll ponder deeply his final message, delivered the very next morning. Contact Mel Lee, melmolee@reagan.com. SPONSOR OF THE WEEK We wish to thank GEISINGER/HOLY SPIRIT PRIMARY CARE PROVIDERS for sponsoring an ad in our weekly bulletin.
