WEAR RED FOR PENTECOST Red signifies the burning fire of God s love. A story from the Desert Fathers: Abba Lot went to see Abba Joseph and said to him, Abba, as far as I can, I say my little office, I fast a little, I pray and meditate, I live in peace and as far as I can, I purify my thoughts. What else can I do? The old man stood up and stretched his hands towards heaven. His fingers became like ten lamps of fire and he said to him, If you will, you can become all flame. this week at StEAS MON 29 TUE 30 WED 31 THU 1 FRI 2 SAT 3 SUN 4 Parish and CCD Offices Closed 7:30 am 7:00 pm 9:30 am 7:00 pm 6:00 pm 7:00 pm After Masses Gospel Reflection Freedom from Overeating Faith Matters Morning Faith Matters Evening Special Series: Fundamentals of the Catholic Faith, with Monsignor King Zumba Fitness Life in the Spirit (rosary 6:30 pm) First Friday Devotions Pentecost Collection New Hope Food Bank Collection 6:00 pm Farewell Reception for Pastoral Musician and Choir Director Steve Stringer and family Pentecost Collection New Hope Food Bank Collection 9:00 am RCIA 6:00 pm Kids Open Gym and Legos Club 6:00 pm Let s Play Cards! 7:00 pm 14+ Basketball 8:00 pm 14+ Floor Hockey SATURDAY MAY 27 VIGIL, SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER 5:00 pm Tom Hanus SUNDAY May 28 SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER 7:30 am People of the Parish 9:00 am Marydel Clark 11:00 am Don Gleichman MONDAY MAY 29 MONDAY OF THE SEVENTH WEEK OF EASTER 8:30 am Rosary 9:00 am 50th Wedding Anniversary of Jeanne and Tom Foley TUESDAY MAY 30 TUESDAY OF THE SEVENTH WEEK OF EASTER 6:45 am Morning Prayer 7:00 am Constance Villella WEDNESDAY MAY 31 FEAST OF THE VISITATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY 8:30 am Rosary 9:00 am Don Gleichman THURSDAY JUNE 1 MEMORIAL OF SAINT JUSTIN, MARTYR 6:45 am Morning Prayer 7:00 am Daniel Brown FRIDAY JUNE 2 FRIDAY OF THE SEVENTH WEEK OF EASTER 6:45 am Morning Prayer 7:00 am Dora Fabiano 8:30 am Rosary 9:00 am Judith Groenenboom SATURDAY JUNE 3 3:00 pm Confessions VIGIL, PENTECOST 5:00 pm Don Wargo SUNDAY JUNE 4 PENTECOST SUNDAY 7:30 am Jenison and Cavanaugh Families 9:00 am People of the Parish 11:00 am Tyler Mangus * Adult Choir

3 (continued from cover) the keynote speaker at my 50th high school reunion. This is what I used as my theme: J is Jesus first O others are second Y yourself is third When people live that way, they find JOY. Dr. Douglas Pieper PARISHIONER DR. DOUGLAS PIEPER was ordained a bishop in the Episcopal Missionary Church, established in 1992 by clergy and laypersons concerned about theological changes in the Episcopal Church. His faith journey led him to the Catholic Church and to our parish. A musician and owner of Pieper Voice and Piano Studio, Bowmansdale, Dr. Pieper began professional studies at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he performed with the Metropolitan Opera Company for two years. I felt I needed more focus and that I needed to finish college. With a strong belief in equality and a desire to attend school in the South, he chose what was then Saint Augustine s College, a historically African American school established by Episcopal clergy in Raleigh, North Carolina. Dr. Pieper was the first white student at the school. He always felt accepted and protected, even during the turmoil after the April 1968 assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The college website notes that it established the first school of nursing in the state of North Carolina for African-American students and served as the only hospital that served African Americans until One of its most famous patients was boxer Jack Johnson, the first African-American world heavyweight boxing champion. While at the college, Douglas married, and because the campus could not accommodate a married couple, he and his wife Carol moved to Gordon College in Massachusetts, where he studied political science. After graduating, he attended Nashotah House Theological Seminary, an Anglican seminary in Wisconsin. However, concerned about some of the denomination s theology, he deferred ordination for a couple of decades. While living and working in Bowmansdale, he began attending an Anglican church in Carlisle and played the organ for the church. One day someone asked him, Have you ever considered becoming a priest? I looked at him with tears in my eyes and said yes. Dr. Pieper was ordained and completed doctoral studies in divinity at American Christian College and Seminary in Oklahoma City. He also obtained a doctorate in music. As a priest and later bishop in the Episcopal Missionary Church, he served as pastor of Holy Family Anglican Church, Hyattsville, Maryland, for 20 years. While volunteering at the YMCA, where he serves as chaplain, he met Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton parishioner Cory Brown, who was doing an internship. He just started talking about his church, and Pieper became interested. He met with Monsignor King, Deacon Hall, Father Paul Schenck (also a former Anglican priest), and Bishop Gainer I just felt the Lord was leading me away from the political issues in the Episcopal Church. I started attending Mass here several mornings a week, and I just felt so at home. He loves to minister, and is happy to be able to pray immediately with anyone who asks. Douglas and Carol celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary last week on the feast of The Ascension of the Lord. They have two children and six grandchildren.

MORNING FAITH MATTERS JOIN US! On Wednesday, May 31, at 9:30 am in the Bayley Conference Room, we continue our study program, Who Am I To Judge?, featuring Dr. Edward Sri. When we love our neighbors, we want what is best for them. We don t want them to make choices that will hurt themselves or others, or make themselves or others unhappy. But what s the right balance between expressing concern and being accused of the paramount relativistic sin, being intolerant? Last week, we began looking at tools for engaging moral relativism. This week we will examine three keys to help us communicate love and respect when having dialogues and conversations about morality, and how to resist having the moral relativistic worldview imposed upon us. Who Am I To Judge? is a brand-new catechetical program produced by the Augustine Institute. Questions? Contact Mel Lee, melmolee@reagan.com. FAITH MATTERS EVENING Monsignor King continues his special series on Fundamentals of the Catholic Faith: A Survey of Theology, Wednesday evenings at 7 pm in the Bayley Conference Room, through June 14. 5 PENTECOST COLLECTION The theme for this year s Pentecost Collection, I have chosen you, reminds us of an astonishing thought: It is not about what we do; it is about what Jesus does in and through us. His call and choice of individuals for ministry equips, inspires, and enables a man to answer the Lord s call. We have many young men in our Diocese who have entered the seminary to further discern God s call in their lives. In our Permanent Diaconate Program, we have over 45 men who are also discerning the call to the ministry of charity and service. Our retired priests, after a life of faithful service in the priesthood, continue to serve our Diocese through lives of prayer, witness, and Sacramental Service to Parishes. Your generous response to the Pentecost Collection assists me in supporting these men who are in seminary formation, Permanent Diaconate preparation, or who have retired. With your continued assistance our Diocese will be blessed with many good and holy priests and deacons willing and ready to journey with you and your families and lead you to His Kingdom. Sincerely in Christ, Most Reverend Ronald W. Gainer Bishop of Harrisburg QUO VADIS DAYS, JUNE 25-28, is a time of recreation, fellowship, prayer, and discussions to help young men explore our Lord s call in their lives.
