1 Remember. Passover is the very source of the sacrificial images and words of the Eucharist. If the mtzveach, the altar, is the heart of the Mass, the Pesach, the Passover is surely its soul. The institution of the Passover is given in Ex. 12:14: This will be a day for you to remember and celebrate as a festival to ADONAI ( LORD ) ; from generation to generation you are to celebrate it by a perpetual regulation. It would become one of the great festivals of the nation of Israel. In time changes took place in the way it was celebrated as compared with its first celebration. But the Seder or service of rehearsal was and remains the chief form of observance. The Hebrew name for this is the Haggadah, or tale. The centerpiece image in some Passover booklets is the sacrifice of the Lamb, which remained a key component until the first century, when it was replaced with the matzah bread. by Reverend Paul Chaim Schenck In order to see the connection between the Passover and the Eucharist, it is important to begin with the Jewish concept of zachor, or memorial. This idea is foundational to Jewish theology beginning in the Torah (The Books of Moses), where at February 4, 2018 (continued inside)
2 Do this in remembrance of me. (continued) Exodus 13:3 is the command to observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread Zachor ethatzah asher yitzatam m mitzrayim. And Moses said to the people, Remember this day, in which you came out from Egypt. The remembrance of the liberation from Egyptian slavery is the whole premise of the Passover, which bears marks of timelessness, being called, in Ex. 12:2, the beginning of months, and leads to an elaborate rehearsal through recitation. It was both a sign and an ordinance (Ex. 13:910). In Jewish thought, as well as Christian, memorial is more than a historic marker it is a timeless participation in a cosmic drama of redemption. In respect especially to Passover, zachor was more than remembrance. It is perhaps better understood as recollection and even as reenactment. It is precisely this idea, of real time memorial, that is the meaning of the words of Jesus in the institution of the Eucharist in Luke 22:19: And he took bread, and when he had given thanks he broke it and gave it to them, saying, This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." Here we see that Jesus orders the same vivid rehearsal as that of the Passover tale. The Passover liturgy is contained in the Haggadah, which leads the Israelites through the whole story of their salvation: the great loss of freedom when they became slaves in Egypt; Moses, the great emissary of liberation who leads them to the Promised Land; and finally the inheritance of the Land flowing with milk and honey. That story has preserved the Jewish people through millennia of deprivations, persecutions and even genocide. It has become the paradigmatic tale of triumph out of tragedy, inspiring countless generations to rise above their circumstances and lay hold of hope in a better future. This is the ultimate promise of the Eucharist. The essential content of the Eucharist is what Jesus called the Anamnesis (the Greek word for zachor, memorial). It is therefore the commemoration of Christ, which in the Eucharist plays the role of the Haggadah of the Passover Seder. These words of remembrance, the essence of the Eucharistic liturgy, invite participants into the reenactment that transmits us to the place where Christ our Passover, as Priest and Victim, offers up his own sacrifice as the lamb of God who takes away the sin of world (John 1:29). Sin threatens our ultimate happiness and fulfillment by depriving us of eternal life. The Eucharist restores that promise and hope, and so infuses our lives with ultimate meaning and purpose: we are destined for union with the God of the universe!
