It is here in this holy city that the redemptive power of God will be made evident to all. Jesus is on the way to fulfill his mission and begins his final journey toward the holy city. When Jesus set his face to go to Jerusalem, he set his face to die. In his book Jesus: A Pilgrimage, Father James Martin states Perhaps Jesus also saw his impending suffering not only as God s will, but the inevitable result of having come into the world. The life span of someone purely good in a world rife with sin was bound to be short. Jesus had begun to speak openly with the disciples along the journey about what was to come, but they cannot begin to imagine the horror of Jesus final days. Jesus knew exactly what awaited him, but he also knew that in the end, his Father would never leave him. Words from the Prayer of Saint Francis de Sales show us the complete trust Jesus had in his Father, and give us strength for our own journeys God, whose very own you are, will lead you safely through all things... He will either shield you from suffering or will give you unfailing strength to bear it. Through his unshakable confidence in his loving Father, and by the sheer joy and overwhelming love of what was laid before him as the plan of our salvation, Jesus endured this part of the journey. His journey to Jerusalem is our journey, too. If he set his face to go there and die for us, we should set our faces in order to take up our crosses as well. To follow in his footsteps means to be willing to take the narrow path and offer ourselves for others. It means separating from worldly influences and rewards. It means trusting in the Lord, stepping out in faith, and drawing ever closer to his loving presence even if just by one slow, small step at a time. So do not count the cost, but instead move ahead walking with focus, determination, and most of all trust. Set your face to go to Jerusalem as we continue our journey together.
