Think loose and comfy. $ Days of Francis This Monday, August 17th, will make exactly forty days until the arrival of Pope Francis to Philadelphia on September 26, Forty days is a number of great religious significance - the number of years Moses and the Israelites wandered in the desert; the number of days Jesus fasted in the desert before beginning His public ministry; and it s the number of days Catholics spend in preparation for Jesus Passion, Death, and Resurrection during Lent. Pope Francis has asked all Catholics worldwide to use these days as a time of preparation and prayer for the World Meeting of Families. Let every family be a welcoming place of goodness and peace for children and the elderly, for the sick and the lonely, for the poor and the needy. His prayer that I ask you to pray goes like this: God and Father of us all in Jesus, your Son and our Savior, You have made us Your Sons and Daughters, in the Family of the Church. May Your grace and love help our families in every part of the world be united to one another in fidelity to the Gospel. May the example of the Holy Family with the aid of Your Holy Spirit guide all families, especially those most troubled, to be homes of communion and prayer, and to always seek Your truth and live in Your love. through Christ our Lord, Amen Our Catholic Charities of Rio Grande, Cape May County, invites you to prepare to help the poor by encountering the reality of poverty in our Diocese. Elsewhere in the bulletin I explain Our Lady of Knots. (Continued on next page )
2 (Continued ) After Mass this weekend, you will find knots passed out that you can take home with you. These knots, inspired by Pope Francis devotion to Our Lady, Undoer of Knots, represents the knots of poverty so many in South Jersey face. They were the work of the children of Saint John of God Center, Westville Grove, NJ. Each has a message that we can pray, or work on this week. Keep it in a handy place to remember not only Pope Francis, but what we might alleviate this week in our lives. We invite you to come visit the Catholic Charities center near you to learn how we as a Catholic community respond to these issues and help untie the knots. Again, this week we donated seventy-five (75) meals to catholic Charities that you made at home. Catholic Charities Open House for Cape May County will be held in Rio Grande Village Shoppes, 1304 Rt. 47 South, Friday, August 28th from 4 to 6 p.m. Always, Father Soprano Nico Amadio, Krista Balderman, Jacqueline M. 3 On this weekend of August 15th and 16th, because the Feast of Our Lady s Assumption, is so close to her Son s Day it is not a Holy Day of Obligation. Perhaps learning more about Our Lady, Undoer of Knots, would be fitting. Our lives have knots that can seem impossible to untie. Marriage troubles, money problems, unemployment, illness, fears and worries of all kinds. When we find ourselves facing challenges and seem to have no solutions, there is a devotion we can turn to that helps untie the knots we create; in the words of Pope Francis, better unite with God and always serve Him. The devotion is recent, Pope Francis brought it from Germany to Argentina only thirty years ago, while the image and its story are not. It began in 1612 with a miserably unhappy marriage. A German, Wolfgang Langenmonte and wife, Sofie, were on the brink of divorce. He sought advise from Father Jakob Rem, a Jesuit priest. At a meeting with Father Jakob, Wolfgang handed a wedding ribbon to the priest who in turn placed it on an image of Our Lady of the Snows and while untying its knots prayed, I raise up the bond of marriage, that all knots be loosened and resolved. (At that time, a bride and groom were tied together in the wedding ceremony with a ribbon that symbolized their unbroken union). The untied ribbon became bright white a sign of Mary s intercession and the Langemonte marriage survived. Pope Francis, then Father Jorge, met this devotion in 1986 while studying in Germany. When visiting The Church of Saints Peter and Perlach in Augsburg, he saw a painting of Our Lady untying the knots in a white ribbon. He was captivated by the painting and story behind it. In the image is Mary receiving from one angel a white ribbon with knots and is smoothing the other end. The Holy Spirit appears over Mary s head and surrounded by twelve stars and eight angels, Mary unties knots in the ribbon while she stands above a crescent moon, crushing a twisted serpent under her heel. It recalls the passage from Revelation 12:1; a great sign shall appear in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of 12 stars on her head. Some reflective questions: 1) What is the one knot in your life that causes you the most worry and heartache? 2) Are you willing to allow Mary to help you find solutions to this knot? 3) Does knowing Mary is waiting to help you undo the knots give you a greater confidence in prayer? From Pope Francis Prayer to Our Lady: Holy Mary, full of the presence of God, during your life you accepted with great humility the holy will of the Father, and the legacy of your Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ and evil never dared to entangle you with confusion. Since then you have interceded for all of our difficulties as you did at the Wedding Feast of Cana. With all simplicity and patience you have given us an example of how to untangle the knots in our complicated lives. By being our Mother forever, you arrange and make clear the path that unites us to our Lord. (Continue on next page.)
4 (continued) Holy Mary with your maternal heart, untie the knots that upset our lives. We ask you to receive into your hands (make your request) and deliver us from the chains and confusion that restrain us. Blessed Virgin through your grace, your intercession, and by your example, deliver us from evil and untie the knots that keep us from being united to God. So that, free of all confusion and error, we may find Him in all things, keep Him in our hearts, and serve Him in our brothers and sisters.
