I admire the courage of those who hope to be able gradually to resume a normal life, waiting for joy and love to return to brighten their existence. We can and must all nourish this hope! Knot of the week: Each year more than 100 refugees leave violence and persecution in their home countries and build new lives in the Diocese of Camden. With just one week left until the arrival of Pope Francis in Philadelphia this weekend, we are almost finished our 40 Day period of preparation. We remember immigrants and especially refugees this week, who flee violence and must start anew in the Diocese of Camden. This week also begins the World Meeting of Families congress in Philadelphia. Thousands of families from around the world, and several from our parishes and Diocese, will attend this historic gathering of faith. The full catechesis that will be used for the meeting is available at We ll be following the six families sponsored by Catholic Charities to attend the gathering on our website at CatholicCharitiesCamden.org/40Days.

Authority extended to all priests Under church law, excommunication latae sententia is incurred by committing one of a set of especially grave sins, which include heresy, desecration of the Eucharist and a physical attack on the pope. This set includes willful killing of the unborn, thus anyone who willingly participates in an abortion including the pregnant woman, the abortion provider and any assistants incurs excommunication latae sententia, which normally can be lifted only by the local bishop. In some countries, for instance the United States, most if not all bishops have for years granted their priests the faculty to remove the penalty of excommunication if it was incurred. However, in this Year of Mercy, which starts 8 December and ends 20 November 2016, Pope Francis has chosen to extend to all Catholic priests the authority to absolve of the sin of abortion those who have procured it and who, with contrite heart, seek forgiveness for it.

Special Announcements to All Catholics Statement of Bishop Dennis Sullivan Regarding Pope Francis Motu Proprio Mitis Iudex Dominus Iesus On the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 8 September 2015, Pope Francis promulgated a letter entitled The Lord Jesus, Gentle Judge, which revised the canonical procedures for Catholics seeking a declaration of nullity (annulment) for a marriage. The Holy Father made it clear that the Church s law and pastoral life are ordered to the practice of charity and mercy and ultimately the salvation of souls. In fact, Pope Francis made it clear that he is not promoting the nullity of marriage, but the quickness of the processes, as well as a correct simplicity of annulment procedures. These changes have resulted from the world-wide consultation for last year s Extraordinary Synod and the recommendations of a commission of canonists impaneled by the Holy Father to review annulment procedures and the Church s law. In the coming months new procedures and policies will be developed. I have asked the Diocesan Tribunal to prepare presentations for priests, deacons and the faithful before the beginning of December. In this way the Diocese of Camden will be ready on 8 December to implement the changes made by the Motu Proprio. On that day, we, together with the Church throughout the world, will joyfully commence the Jubilee of Mercy. As your Pastor, I urge you to keep an eye and ear out - you may know family members or friends for whom this may help. Father Soprano
