He lets go of, and is critical of, those human rules that He thinks get in the way of focusing on what is essential in our relationship with God. Yet, He shows great reverence for the Law of Moses. The purpose of the Law is to show that no nation had gods so close to it as our Lord and God. What is essential with every religious law is that, unlike civil law, it is only of value if it is linked with the proper inner disposition; we cannot honor God with our lips but not in our hearts. Whether or not I am happy about it, what is important about traffic laws is that I obey them. But, if I go to Mass or fast or gives alms in a grudging fashion, what good does that do me? It leaves my heart untransformed which then is the source of evil thoughts, unchaste actions, theft, murder, and so forth. At the same time, our outward actions are important. St. James (Chapter 1) says we must be doers of the Word, and not hearers only because our outward actions affect our inner feelings. Fulfilling religious obligations, even when we are not feeling it, can be a way in which we shape our Dispositions. Just like practicing an instrument or playing a sport, the Christian life is more enjoyable with practice. Our life in Christ requires delicate balancing between outward behavior and our inner heart even though ultimately it is the state of our heart that matters to God. 3 More than 150 parishioners joined Father Soprano as he dedicated Mary s Shrine and Plaza and Anne Mueller, Pres. Altar and Rosary Society, lead us in the Rosary and provided prayer cards The choir of St. John Neumann Parish volunteered their time and talents to lead us in singing Hail Holy Queen.

Poverty today is a cry. Knot of the week: In New Jersey, 31% of low income households spend more than 50% of total income on housing. Often, families must choose between paying rent, paying utilities or buying adequate food. Thank you to all who came out to an open house with Catholic Charities last week! Classes for grades 1 8 are on Tuesday from 4:30 to 5:45 pm and Wednesdays from 6:00 to 7:15 pm. You have your choice of Tuesday or Wednesday sessions. Registration forms and Parish Census forms can be picked up at the parish office. Registration forms for CCD can be downloaded from the parish website. There will be an in-house registration on Tuesday, September 8th and Wednesday, September 9th from 6 to 7 pm at the Parish Life Center, at the St. Raymond Campus. The first day of class is September 22nd and 23rd. There is meeting for all parents of first grade students and students new to the program on September 14th at 7 pm at the Parish Life Center. If you have not provided us with a copy of your child's baptismal certificate please bring it to the meeting. 6 Courtesy Requests 1) Many people use the pews in our Parish Churches. At St. Raymond there are booklets for the readings in both Spanish and English. Please keep them both in the book slots at the pews. Respectfully returning all books to these slots after your use is appreciated. 2) If you wish to bring forward the offertory gifts at any Mass you attend, perhaps for a friend or family member, please notify the ushers as you enter before that mass. 3) At St. John of God, parking on the grass behind the church, and near the vineyard is welcomed. Doors at the sides of the church give access without steps or traveling cars. Please do not park on the black apron of the church lot. It blocks the entrance and exit for the priests. 4) The area at St. John s near the vineyard welcomes cars, rather than blocking access to Haven House. If there were need for emergency vehicles to get to Haven House, these cars would be in the way perhaps a life could be saved if parking off the lane was considered. 5) Parking lots at St. Raymond Church, school, and additional parking near the Prayer garden have been relined (156 parking spaces in total). Kindly, and for safety reasons use the lined areas only. Do not park where there are no lines. Remembering others who use this area, as well as yourself, is an act of courtesy and caring.
