SUNDAY THOUGHT John 2:13-25 Anna Rose Rickenbaugh Emma Irene Rickenbaugh Stanley Franczak Genevieve Martin Contributions for Weekend February 24/25, 2018: Total Offering: $13, Sunday Collection: $9, Faith Direct: $3, Poor Box: $88.00 Our Sunday Gospel reading this weekend shows us how easy it is at times for the ways of the world to enter into the ways of God. The men and women who were buying and selling in the Temple in Jerusalem probably thought that they were doing something pleasing to God. He deserved worthy and fit sacrifices and they were simply providing the means for those sacrifices. In the process though, things got blurred. Buying and selling and turning a profit crossed over from religion to pure commerce. Religion became as common as going to the mall to buy a new pair of shoes. Jesus dramatic attempt to re-awaken a renewed sense of the sacred among His contemporaries should be well taken by all of us. The inside of church and the outside of church can sometimes blend into one for us too. It isn t malicious on our part, just carelessness. Let s make sure we make our church always a house of prayer too. 1

3 THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT MARCH 4, 2018 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, Virgin ( ) Tekakwitha was born at the Native American village of Ossernenon (Auriesville, N.Y.), the daughter of a Christian Algonquin woman and a pagan Mohawk father. When she was four, the family was laid low by smallpox. Only Tekakwitha survived, scarred and half-blind. Her uncle, a Mohawk chief, adopted her. Tekakwitha learned her Christian faith from other Mohawk Christians and the Jesuit priests who came to the village when she was eleven. Eight years later another priest came, and she received baptism, becoming Catherine, Kateri in her native Mohawk. Afterward, her family bullied her, and she was forced to flee to the Saint Francis Xavier Mission, near Montreal, Canada. There she spent herself in the care of the old and the sick. She prayed in the woods before trees she had marked with wooden crosses. She did penance with a rough leather belt about her waist and fir branches in her bed. On March 25, 1679, Kateri pledged perpetual virginity, a first for any Native American woman. Who can tell me what is most pleasing to God, that I may do it? she often asked. In Lent of 1680, Kateri, always weak, became gravely ill. Jesus, I love you, were her final words. Shortly after her death on April 17, the Wednesday of Holy Week that year, her pockmarked face grew clear and lovely. Only eight years later the Bishop of Quebec declared her the Genevieve of Canada. Her feast day is July 14 th. Visit crsricebowl.org for more. LENTEN SUNDAY SCRIPTURE SERIES There is still time to join Deacon Jerry Blanda in a discussion on the Sunday Scripture readings during Lent. The Lenten Sunday Scripture Series are held twice each Thursday once in the afternoon at 1:00 p.m. and repeated again at 7:00 p.m. in the church meeting room. Each session begins with a brief video presentation by Dr. Brant Pitre, a professor at the University of Notre Dame of New Orleans, Louisiana, followed by a discussion on the readings and/or Dr. Petri s comments and will last about an hour. Plan on attending one or more of the sessions, you will be glad you did! WEEKLY MASS REMINDER The Mass consists in some sense of two parts, namely the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist, these being so closely interconnected that they form but one single act of worship. For in the Mass is spread the table both of God s Word and of the Body of Christ, and from it the faithful are to be instructed and refreshed. from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 28. ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT The Blessed Sacrament is exposed for private adoration every Friday Afternoon during Lent following Stations of the Cross (1:00 p.m.) until 5:00 p.m. Eucharistic Adoration is an essential part of a vibrant spiritual life. Recently, the men have loved watching movies together and coming together for fellowship during the evenings. For the first time, our residents enjoyed popcorn during their weekly movie night thanks to the St. Anthony Knights of Columbus! The men of Joseph s Home loved it and mentioned that the smell was enticing and brought them out of their rooms. One resident even said, It was lovely and a blessing to be able to enjoy the movies and popcorn! As we all know, sometimes it is the little things that make a big difference! KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS RAFFLE TICKETS The Knights of Columbus will be selling Super Cash Bonanza raffle tickets after all masses in the back of the Church the weekends of March 10/11 as well as March 17/18. Last year the Knights raised $3,000 from this fundraiser and the money was donated to local Charities. The cost of a ticket is $5.00. 5 THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT MARCH 4, 2018 POPE FRANCIS PRAYER INTENTION FOR MARCH Formation of Spiritual Discernment: That the Church may appreciate the urgency of formation in spiritual discernment, both on the personal and communitarian level. The Pope s intention is a very Ignatian inspired intention, recognizing the importance of discerning (seeing) the will of God. It is a skill that can be taught and improved with practice. As a Jesuit, the Holy Father clearly recognizes the importance of formation in discernment of vocations and apostolates both for individuals and in communities. Pope Francis, as a son of St. Ignatius, is well familiar with the Spiritual Exercises developed by the founder of the Society of Jesus in the early 16 th century. These guided reflections presume that spirits good and evil are influencing God s creatures by means sometimes blunt and obvious, but at others more subtle and nuanced. Members of the Pope s Worldwide Prayer Network, the Apostleship of Prayer, commit daily to making an examination of conscience. During this break from the ordinary busyness of the day, we reflect on how we have received grace from God, how we have moved towards Him or away, and which spirits may have been motivation us towards good or evil. St. Ignatius considered this daily examination to be extremely important. He himself is said to have practiced self-examination to a heroic degree. Ignatius taught that discernment was not merely the territory of priests and religious. All vocations are best discerned carefully in prayer and in dialogue with a trusted spiritual advisor. While vocations to marriage, to a profession, to religious life, or the clerical state certainly require such reflection, groups can also practice communal discernment. Religious congregations certainly do so, but also boards of trustees, civic groups, even a book club might discern God s will in a spiritual conversation when considering mission, identity, or major policy decisions. The carnival begins on, Wednesday June 6 th and runs through Sunday June 10 th. This year we have live music, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. St. Anthony s has always been blessed with parishioners working one or several shifts during the carnival. Preparations for this year s carnival are already underway. Please consider volunteering your time as a booth captain or taking a shift for one or two days during the carnival.
