The obvious meaning of the words, the breaking of the bread is of course the Eucharist we celebrate and receive Sunday after Sunday. It is not the only meaning. The breaking of the Eucharistic Bread is also a sign of our willingness to share our lives with one another. Our taking of communion during Mass means that we are commanded by Jesus to also create communion outside of Mass. Our life as a married person, father or mother, friend or co-worker, child or elder, all require selfless loving. When we love our husband or wife with a genuine and selfless love, we enable Jesus to be present in and to that relationship. When we love our brother, sister, or parent, we are doing the same. By our unselfish love, we are helping to make Jesus present in our homes, churches, and throughout the entire world. Our communion with Jesus is our opportunity to bring Him to all hearts that are willing to receive Him. 1

3 THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER APRIL 30, 2017 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Serapion of Algiers, Religious and Martyr ( ) Serapion, a native of England or Ireland, served in the armies of Richard the Lionheart and Leopold VI the Glorious, Duke of Austria, before he joined Castilian forces in their struggles against the Moorish Muslims in Spain. In 1222, when he was probably in his mid-forties, Serapion met Saint Peter Nolasco, who had just founded the Order of Our Lady of Mercy in order to rescue Christians held captive by Muslim rulers. Serapion decided to leave the military and pledge himself to Peter s mission of redemption. According to the traditions of the order, Serapion was in Algiers with another brother negotiating the redemption of eighty-six captives, when the brothers realized they did not have the full ransom. In order that the captives might go free, Serapion offered to remain behind as a hostage until the rest of the money could be paid. The Christian slaves gained their liberty, and the other brother hastened to Barcelona to obtain the ransom for Serapion. Although Peter Nolasco worked swiftly to raise the funds, the money did not reach Algiers soon enough for Serapion s Captors. They pinned him to an X-shaped cross, stabbed him to death, and brutally dismembered his body. A well-known painting by the Spanish artist, Francisco de Zurbaran, captures the moment of Serapion s surrender in the face of such violence. Saint Serapion is considered the proto-martyr or first martyr of the Order of Our Lady of Mercy. His feast day is celebrated on November 14 th. 5 TRINITY DOME COLLECTION The special collection asked for by the Bishops of the United State for the Trinity Dome, the crowing jewel of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception will be taken up this weekend at all the Masses. If you were unprepared to contribute, make your check payable to St. Anthony of Padua with the memo marked Trinity Dome at the Basilica and put it in the collection next Sunday or drop off your contribution to the rectory office. One check will be sent for the project. CO-ED SOFTBALL LEAGUE Registration forms are still available in the Gathering Area of the Church this weekend for our Co-Ed (age 18 and over) Softball League. This is your last chance to pick up a registration form after mass, and return to the rectory office by May 01, EVERYONE CAN DO SOMETHING As our region grapples with the heroin epidemic there are a few things that each of us can do. This weekend is Drug Take-Back Day. Take a few minutes to bring all your unused and unwanted prescription drugs to your local police or sheriff s department. It will keep you home and our environment safe. All of us can also learn more about the epidemic. Go to: WEEKLY MASS REMINDER When you receive Holy Communion, allow the minister to place the Holy Eucharist in your hands. Come with hands ready to receive a gift. CARDS MOTHER S DAY MASS Mother s Day Mass Cards will be sold after most Masses this weekend, April 29/30; and the following weekend May 6/7. This is a great way to honor your Mom, living or deceased, by remembering her with a special Mass. Mass cards for the living are $2.00 and cards for the deceased are $1.00. Cards may also be purchased at the rectory during regular business hours VOLLEYBALL SIGN-UPS All girls in grades 3 through 8 are invited to participate on our volleyball teams. 6 CARNIVAL RAFFLE TICKETS Please stop by the Carnival Raffle ticket table this weekend to pick up your carnival raffle tickets. It will only take a few minutes as there are NO NAMES listed on the envelopes. Simply pick up an envelope for yourself to buy or sell and if you have a family member, neighbor or friend who is unable to pick up their tickets, please consider picking up an envelope for them as well. Due to postal regulations, the raffle tickets WILL NOT BE MAILED. We will be relying on your help to get the tickets into as many hands as possible to make our raffle profitable. The more we welcome people, the better our chance of them joining our parish. CARNIVAL NEWS Our annual parish carnival is scheduled this year for Wednesday, June 7 th through Sunday June 11 th. St. Anthony s has always been blessed with parishioners working one or several shifts during the carnival. Preparations for this year s carnival are already underway. Please consider volunteering your time as a booth captain or taking a shift for one or two days during the carnival. If you enjoy playing Black Jack, Let it Ride and Texas Hold em, we are always in need of casino dealers. We will have a dealer training night on Tuesday June 6, at 6:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. If you would like to be a dealer, but would like a refresher course, please come to the training session. This is a great opportunity to become involved with the parish, meet new friends and visit old friends. Thank you for your continued support of our carnival and parish. MARRIAGE AND FAMILY When a loving person can do good for others, or sees that others are happy, they themselves live happily and in this way give glory to God, for God loves a cheerful giver (2 Cor 9:7). Our Lord especially appreciates those who find joy in the happiness of others. If we fail to learn how to rejoice in the wellbeing of others, and focus primarily on our own needs, we condemn ourselves to a joyless existence, for, as Jesus said, it is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35). The family must always be a place where, when something good happens to one of its members, they know that others will be there to celebrate it with them. Pope Francis, The Joy of Love, 110.
