As it was in Jesus day, so too in our own day, people still sneer at the possibility of so wonderful a mystery as rising from the dead. For men and women like that, their world is too small to allow such a thing. In their pride they have settled for eternal darkness rather than walking into the light of eternal day. For them to do so they would have to place God and not themselves at the center of life. As followers of Jesus Christ, we need to constantly proclaim this incomprehensible reality to waiting hearts. We become witnesses to the resurrection when we do not despair in the face of hardship and suffering. As believers we feel the physical and emotional pain of the loss of a loved one, but we believe deep in our hearts that God brings them to the fullness of life after death. Life s injustices and pain will be swallowed up not in the grave, but in the everlasting embrace of the Father who loves us beyond our imagining. Let us proclaim this wonderful mystery with our lives.
3 THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 6, 2016 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Theophane Venard, Martyr ( ) Theophane was nine years old when he learned of the sacrifice of the martyred priest John Charles Cornay in far-off Tonkin, the country of Vietnam today. Determined to follow the missionary path himself, he attacked his studies with renewed ardor. He conquered his bouts of anger as he told his sister by the recitation of the rosary. Eventually, Theophane was ordained for the missions. In 1852, he left his native France for the East, and, with evident joy, began his mission among the Vietnamese. At the time, it was illegal to proselytize in Vietnam. Shortly after Father Venard s arrival a new royal edict was issued against Christians. Despite suffering repeated illness he continued his work commending all his suffering to the Blessed Virgin to win souls. For a few months Venard hid in a hole from the authorities, all the while translating the New Testament into Vietnamese. With great fervor, he offered himself as a victim for the fledgling Church. In November 1860, amid renewed persecutions, Theophane was arrested and told to trample on the cross. When he refused, he was tried and imprisoned in a cage. On February 2, 1861, he was beheaded. Saint Theophane Venard s feast day is November 24 th. Over thirty years later, Therese Martin, the future Little Flower, read Theophane s prison letters at her Carmel in Lisieux. She was drawn to Theophane s simplicity, his buoyant gladness, and his bold offer of himself. My soul is like his, she said. He is the one who has best lived my way of spiritual childhood. In her final illness, Therese clung to a prayer card of the then Venerable Theophane Venard. Religious Order of the Week Order: Salesians of Don Bosco Founder: St. John Bosco.
