SUNDAY THOUGHT John 12:20-33 Anne Kolke Contributions for Weekend March 10/11, 2018: Total Offering: $14, Sunday Collection:$10, Faith Direct: $3, Poor Box: $ Today in our Gospel Jesus takes a beautiful illustration from nature and applies it to our emotional and spiritual life. Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat. We recognize in nature that a seed is meant to fulfill its natural course of events by becoming that full grown plant. To do so though, the seed must cease being a seed and die to achieve its ultimate end. In God s plan for us, death plays a vital role in achieving our ultimate goal. But when we say this we are also speaking about more than that one final death that will usher us into eternal life. Each day and in many different ways a Christian must submit to the little deaths that make living out the Christian way of life the means to propel them down the road to wholeness and holiness of life. This can often be best seen in couples living out the Sacrament of Marriage. On the day they took their wedding vows they promised to die to everything that would stand in the way of their becoming one. If one or both partners ever came to the point where they thought they could still act or think as if they were still single, the marriage would be heading toward disaster. Their selfish and self-centered actions would not be life giving, but death dealing to their relationship. Jesus wants all of us to choose life, life in all its fullness. Let us continue to follow Jesus in our Lenten journey as we approach the cross with Him which is the key to eternal life. 1

3 FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT MARCH 18, 2018 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Jacinta Marto, Virgin ( ) Jacinta Marto, her brother Francisco, and their cousin Lucia Santos were the three shepherd children to whom the Blessed Mother appeared at Fatima, Portugal, six times in Before the Lady came, the children were pious, but hardly heroic. In her memoirs, Lucia tells of how, on long days in the fields, the three learned their catechism by heart, but also how they raced through their rosaries by reciting only the first line of each prayer. In her apparitions the Blessed Mother urged the children to pray and to do penance. The vision of hell she shared with them filled them with compassion for sinners. Jacinta, only seven years old at the time, led the three in sacrifices. They gave their lunches to beggar children, scrounging instead for wild berries and acorns. Jacinta preferred the bitter green acorns, for the conversion of sinners. About a year after the last apparition Francisco and Jacinta both contracted Spanish influenza. The Blessed Mother came to tell them that she would soon take them to heaven. Francisco died four months later, at the age of eleven. Then Mary came again to Jacinta. She asked me if I still wanted to convert more sinners, the little girl reported. I told her yes, She suffered with pleurisy for a year before dying at the age of ten. She and her brother are the Church s youngest non-martyr saints. Her body was found to be incorrupt at the time of her beatification. Saint Jacinta Marto s feast day is February 20 th the day of her death. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS RAFFLE TICKETS The Knights of Columbus will be selling Super Cash Bonanza raffle tickets after all masses this weekend. Last year the Knights raised $3,000 from this fundraiser and the money was donated to local Charities. The cost of a ticket is $5.00. Please stop by and support the Knights of Columbus in their efforts. WEEKLY MASS REMINDER The Christian faithful who come together as one in expectation of the Lord s coming are instructed by the Apostle Paul to sing together Psalms, hymns, and spiritual canticles (cf. Col 3:16). Singing is the sign of the heart s joy (cf. Acts 2:46). Thus St. Augustine says rightly, Singing is for one who loves, and there is also an ancient proverb: Whoever sings well prays twice over. from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 39. LENTEN COMMUNAL PENANCE SERVICE Our yearly Lenten Communal Penance Service will be held next Sunday, 25 March 2018 at 4:00 p.m. at St. Anthony s Parish with the parishioners of St. Francis de Sales Church. The service of song, scripture and communal preparation for the reception of the sacrament with individual confession of sins and absolution is the perfect way to complete your Lenten observance and to prepare for Easter. Confessions will again be heard Tuesday, 27 March 2018, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 in the afternoon. Confessions will also be heard following the Good Friday Services until all are heard. SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMISSION The St. Anthony Social Concerns volunteers will be serving lunch at the West Side Catholic Center on Tuesday, March 20, Your homemade desserts are truly appreciated by the people who eat at the center. Some request their desserts be packaged to take with them. We use sandwich bags to hold the goodies so the preferred items include brownies (without icing), cookies, bar cookies and even banana or pumpkin, etc. breads that can be sliced. You can drop off your bakery at the rectory on Monday, March 19, If you would like to help us in our mission to serve the needy and you really don t like to bake, please consider a cash donation to help defray the cost of our meals. Any donations are welcome. Thank you. CO-ED SOFTBALL LEAGUE Registration forms are available in the Gathering Area of the Church this weekend for our Co-Ed (age 18 and over) Softball League. It provides an opportunity for our parish community to come together for friendly, competitive softball games on Sunday afternoons May - August at Padua High School field. Whether you are a seasoned veteran or a rookie, we hope to see you there! This is a great way to grow spirituality and gain new insights into our Catholic Faith. 4 DIVINE MERCY DEVOTIONS Sunday, April 8, 2018, is the Feast of Divine Mercy. Divine Mercy Devotions will be celebrated that afternoon from 2:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. The Chaplet of Divine Mercy will be recited at 3:00 p.m. before the Blessed Sacrament. Respond to Jesus invitation to celebrate His Divine Mercy by planning now to come and join us. SPECIAL PROGRAM OF THE DIVINE MERCY All parishioners are invited to attend a special program on Wednesday, April 4 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the main church in preparation for Divine Mercy Sunday. The evening will begin with a viewing of an extraordinary documentary film, The Face of Mercy, narrated by Jim Caviezel. A moving, sung version of the Divine Mercy Chaplet will follow the movie and refreshments and fellowship will wrap up the evening. You are encouraged to invite family, friends and neighbors.
