SUNDAY THOUGHT Matthew 20:1-16 Susan Fadenholz Frances Garlisi Howard Snyder Diane Ujhazy Contribution for Weekend Sept.16/ : Total Offering : $12, Sunday Collection: $8, Faith Direct: $3, Poor Box: $87.00 Most of us find ourselves easily in today s parable. Doesn t it seem that we are always the ones who work the hardest and sacrifice the most, while others who have done so much less than us get all the breaks? No matter how short the line is, we re always at the end of it. Only God knows why He gives certain people all the breaks while we seem to receive none of them. But should this really be a cause for our distress? We do not know what effect certain gifts have on certain people. One person may find the gift of intelligence a burden because it enables that person to see more deeply into life and life s problems. They then will have to struggle with the obligations imposed upon them to make their little corner of the world better because of what they know. Another person with the gift of outward beauty may struggle with establishing authentic relationships with others since other people only see their surface beauty and pay no attention to their true inner beauty. It seems that every gift has its obligation and burden, and we should be very slow to wish such gifts upon ourselves. Envy is not the proper response to God s generosity. Gratitude is. Perhaps God gives gifts to others because they need them and because God hopes that they will use them in the service of others. Perhaps what we see as defects are actually gifts. Our gratefulness to God for all good gifts is our expression of faith in a God who is allknowing and all-wise. 1

3 TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 24, 2017 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Augustine of Canterbury, Bishop (+604) Saint Bede tells how a young Saint Gregory the Great was walking through the Roman marketplace when he saw three slaves with fair faces and long blond hair. They are called Angels, someone told him. That is appropriate, Gregory said, for they have angelic faces, and it is right that they should become fellow heirs with the angels in heaven. Determined to help bring this about, Gregory begged permission from Pope Pelagius to preach the Gospel to the Angels, but the citizens of Rome, deeply attached to the learned monk, made him turn back from his desire to become a missionary. Years later, Gregory became pope himself and revisited his plan to evangelize England. Augustine, Gregory s successor as Abbot of the Monastery of Saint Andrew, was one of thirty missionaries that Gregory chose for the trip. The group set out through France, but they soon lost heart. In a letter, Gregory promoted Augustine to leader of the group, and the mission continued. When they reached Kent, Augustine set about growing the fledgling Church in the manner recommended by Gregory. He befriended King Ethelbert, founded the Monastery of Saints Peter and Paul, built churches dedicated to the Roman martyrs and welcomed Frankish priest to guide them. He died ten years later, the Faith beginning to take hold among the people of Kent. Saint Augustine of Canterbury s feast is celebrated on May 27 th. SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMISSION A sincere THANK YOU to all those who baked for the West Side Catholic Center luncheon on Tuesday, September 19, The 159 hot lunches that we served consisted of taco soup, corn chips, salad, rolls & butter and also included a generous portion of your fresh baked pastries. All were most appreciative. Remember to mark your calendar for our next serving date, Tuesday, November 21, Thank you again for your continued support and generosity to the West Side Catholic Center. EMERGENCY COLLECTION FOR HURRICANE IRMA The Catholic Diocese of Cleveland and diocese across the country have been asked by the leadership of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to have an emergency collection to assist the victims of Hurricane Irma. While it is unfortunate that this comes on the heels of the emergency collection for Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma has been equally as devastating to our brothers and sisters in the Caribbean, especially the Diocese of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, and the southern US needs our help. These funds will be used in the affected areas to support humanitarian aid, assistance with long-term efforts to restore communities after widespread destruction and for pastoral and reconstruction needs of the Church in the US and the Caribbean. The church is a channel for grace and solidarity in the wake of natural disasters as it offers solace and support in the aftermath. The Church itself in these regions is now in need of tremendous assistance itself. Many of the Church s structures have been damaged and their resources depleted which makes it challenging to provide assistance and pastoral outreach to those in need. In support of this major relief effort, St. Anthony will have a special second collection which will take place next weekend, September 30 October 1, All checks should be made payable to St. Anthony of Padua with the memo line marked Emergency Collection for Hurricane Irma. Thank you THE SACRAMENT OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be celebrated after the homily of the Mass at all the Masses the weekend of October 7 & 8, The sacrament should be received by those experiencing serious and lifethreating illnesses, major surgery, and the debilitating effectives of the aging process. Consider bring a relative or neighbor to Mass that weekend to receive the sacrament. 2

5 TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 24, 2017 RELIGIOUS ORDER OF THE WEEK Order: Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland (OSU) Founder: Saint Angela Merici Origin: When St. Angela was 20-yearsold, she was saddened by how many young women had little to no education. She invited many young women to her home where she began to teach them herself, especially the Catholic faith. The young women learned how to pray and participate in the sacramental life of the Church. Eventually, she formed the community of the Ursulines in Interesting Fact #1: The Ursulines were the first group of women religious to work outside of the cloister. BLANKET SUNDAY COMING SOON The weekend of October 7-8th marks the 31st Annual Blanket Sunday Collection to aid the needy. This collection is sponsored by the Diocesan St. Vincent de Paul Society. Due to lack of storage space, we will gratefully accept your cash donation and do the shopping for you, making your money go even further with bulk purchases of blankets and other items needed by the homeless and disadvantaged. So blanket someone for the winter and give yourself a warm feeling! You may also donate online at PARISH GROUP OF THE WEEK The Ushers are a group of men and women who serve as greeters at Mass. They open the door for parishioners, help those in need of assistance, aid in the collection of the weekly offering, and pass out bulletins at the end of Mass. To join, please call the rectory for the name and number of the person to contact. Interesting Fact #2: The Ursulines became the first teaching order of women in the Catholic Church. Interesting Fact #3: The Ursulines came to the Diocese of Cleveland in (3 years after the creation of the diocese) Website: HEY CATHOLIC! DID YOU KNOW Did you know that the month of September is typically dedicated to the Seven Sorrow of Mary? They are: the prophecy of Simeon, the flight into Egypt, the loss of the child Jesus in the temple, the meeting of Jesus and Mary on the Way of the Cross, the Crucifixion, the taking down of the Body of Jesus from the Cross, the burial of Jesus. Consider praying this devotion or at the least, reflecting on one of the events. WALL OF HONOR Many parishioners and their family members are serving in the United States Military. Please pray for their safety, along with the safety of our Parma Police Officers, Firefighters, and EMTs. MYSTAGOGICAL MOMENTS Mystagogy (mist-a-go-gee) is prayerful reflection on the presence of God in the midst of events. This section will offer a question to begin your conversation with God. Question: What part of the homily touched your heart today? How does life need to change for Jesus? CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY CORNER The proof of love is in the works. Where love exists, it works great things. But when it ceases to act, it ceases to exist. St. Gregory the Great 4
