Our conversion must always be tempered by hope, the hope that we can and will be different through God s grace. Hope is certainly one of the great themes of Advent and should be one of the great themes of our own lives. We must cherish the hope for the future when the kingdom of God will fully be established on the earth. We must long for the hope of our near future, when with the assistance of God s grace; we will gradually be transformed more and more into His likeness. One hope lives within the other hope like a circle within a circle. Ultimately, one day these two hopes will be joined together into one final and eternal peace.

3 SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 4, 2016 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Peter of Cava, Abbot and Bishop (+1123) Peter Pappacabone was a native of Salerno in Italy. As a youth he entered the monastery of the Holy Trinity in Cava de Tirreni that had been founded by his uncle St. Alferius. Peter made great progress under Leo, the second abbot of Cava. Desiring to pursue deeper prayer, Peter left for a time to go to Cluny, the motherhouse of the great Benedictine reform. Six years later, Peter returned to Cava and was appointed bishop of Policastro, but he soon found that his longing for the monastery overwhelmed him. He resigned his see, and returned to Cava, where Abbot Leo put Peter forward as his successor. Straightaway, Peter set about reforming the abbey, drawing upon his experiences at Cluny. The monks soon found the strict rule he had brought from Cluny extremely irksome: they began to murmur and rebel and some of them carried their complaints to the aged Leo in his retirement. St. Peter, far from resisting and equally far from relaxing the rule, quietly left and betook himself to another monastery. It wasn t long before the monks of Cava, urged by Abbot Leo, came to entreat St. Peter to return, which he consented to do. Thereafter, it was remarked that those who had most vehemently opposed him were now foremost in welcoming the rule they had previously spurned. Under the government of Abbot Peter the monastery flourished amazingly. A seemingly endless stream of novices came to take vows under him. St. Peter of Cave died in 1123; his feast day is celebrated on Mach 4 th. THE FEAST OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION Thursday of this week, December 8 th is the Feast of Mary s Immaculate Conception, a holyday of obligation for all Catholics. 4 ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH APOSTLESHIP OF PRAYE INTENTIONS FOR DECEMBER Universal Intention: End of Child Soldiers That the scandal of child soldiers may be eliminated the world over. Evangelization Intention: Europe That the people of Europe may rediscover the beauty, goodness, and truth of the Gospel which gives joy and hope to life. Since World War II international law has tried to protect children from military exploitation by declaring that having children soldiers constitutes a war crime. One would think that with such laws the world would become more civilized. But the scandalous reality is far different. There are more child soldiers today than at any other time in history. One estimate puts the figure at 300,000 children in at least twenty countries, mostly in Africa. In the last fifteen years 10,000 children were kidnapped by the Lord s Resistance Army in northern Uganda and forced to fight. Compared to adults, children are easier to manipulate, they don t eat much, and do not have a highly developed sense of danger, thus making it easy to send them into the line of fire. Children are prized because they are pure and are sometimes believed to have magic powers that protect them. Last August, Monsignor Simon Kassas, representing the Vatican at the United Nations, told the Security Council, Never in recent memory has so many children been subjected to such violent brutality: children used as soldiers, suicide bombers, sex slaves, and disposable intelligence-gatherers in the most dangerous military operations. These crimes must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. This month we remember in a special way how the Son of God came to earth as a child. May the Prince of Peace inspire all people of good will to pray and work for the elimination of the scandal of child soldiers.
