SUNDAY THOUGHT John 4:5-42 Today in our Gospel from St. John, Jesus meets the Woman at the Well. Thirst has once again drawn her to the well. She will draw water from a spring that will only leave her thirsty again. Our Lenten journey should likewise have something of the dryness of the desert about it. This is a time in which we allow the deep inner longings of our heart to rise to the surface. Lent s challenge comes from not trying to drown them out with too much shopping, entertainment, work, eating, drinking, internet, or busyness. We need to feel the thirst. It is not an easy thing to do. Our first inclination upon feeling uneasy about anything is to take the easiest way out. But we should not let this uneasiness frighten us into some senseless activity. Be still. Let those desires lead you to God as the Samaritan woman did. Jesus promises us that we won t die of thirst. In fact it may just be that our thirst will be what leads us to life the life that comes from knowing we are made for God and nothing less than God can satisfy us. 1

3 THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Bonaventure, Priest ( ) As a boy, Bonaventure was gripped by a lifethreatening intestinal illness. His mother prayed to Saint Francis of Assisi, who had only recently died, and her son was saved. Bonaventure entered Francis own order at the age of twenty-two and was eventually elected minister general. In this capacity, he composed a biography of Saint Francis to demonstrate the devotion which I am bound to bear to this our holy father, by whose merits and invocation I was, while yet a child, delivered from the jaws of death. Among Bonaventure s many accomplishments was the furthering of higher education for the friars. Not all of them appreciated his efforts, but Bonaventure, a great scholar in his own right, held that preaching friars needed proper formation for the sake of proclaiming the Gospel. Yet he always held fast to Francis sense that all things must be ordered toward union with God. He made every truth a prayer to God and a praise to God, one chronicle attests. Bonaventure turned down the bishopric of York, but accepted when Pope Gregory X insisted that he become cardinal-archbishop of Albano. In this capacity, he strove for the union the Eastern and Western branches of the Church, especially through his leadership at the Council of Lyons. He died while the council was still in session, in Saint Bonaventure s feast day is celebrated on July 15 th, the date of his death. SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMISSION The St. Anthony Social Concerns volunteers will be serving lunch at the West Side Catholic Center on Tuesday, March 21, Your homemade desserts are truly appreciated by the people who eat at the center. Some request their desserts be packaged to take with them. We use sandwich bags to hold the goodies so the preferred items include brownies (without icing), cookies, bar cookies and even banana or pumpkin, etc. breads that can be sliced. You can drop off your bakery at the rectory on Monday, March 20, If you would like to help us in our mission to serve the needy and you really don t like to bake, please consider a cash donation to help defray the cost of our meals. Religious Order of the Week Order: Maryknoll Sisters (MM) Charism: Maryknoll Sisters give witness to God s love and devote their lives in service to the poor, the ailing, and the marginalized overseas as nurses, doctors, teachers, social workers, and more. Importance: The Maryknoll Sisters began in 1912 when they became the first group of Catholic Sisters in the United States founded for overseas mission. 4 ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH CARNIVAL NEWS Our annual parish carnival is scheduled this year for Wednesday, June 7 th through Sunday June 11 th. St. Anthony s has always been blessed with parishioners working one or several shifts during the carnival. Preparations for this year s carnival are already underway. Please consider volunteering your time as a booth captain or taking a shift for one or two days during the carnival. If you enjoy playing Black Jack, Let it Ride and Texas Hold em, we are always in need of casino dealers. This is a great opportunity to become involved with the parish, meet new friends and visit old friends. Thank you for your continued support of our carnival and parish. PARMA, OHIO PSR RE-REGISTRATION PSR registration for the school year is now underway. Re-registration forms have been mailed to your homes. You are invited to join us to watch and reflect upon pivotal individuals who have made significant contributions to Catholic culture and spirituality over the centuries. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH PARMA, OHIO MARCH 19, 2017 KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS RAFFLE TICKETS The Knights of Columbus will be selling Super Cash Bonanza raffle tickets after all masses in the back of the Church the weekends of March 25/26 as well as April 1/2. Last year the Knights raised $3,000 from this fundraiser and the money was donated to local Charities. The cost of a ticket is $5.00. Please stop by and support the Knights of Columbus in their efforts. *****The Knights of Columbus would like to congratulate George Ochocki, age 11, of St. Anthony s, for winning the district round of The Youth Free Throw Contest for his age group. He now moves on the final round in Columbus Ohio. Best of luck George! HEY CATHOLIC! DID YOU KNOW Did you know that a Catholic is required to go to Confession once a year and also at any time of the year when guilty of a mortal sin. If guilty of a mortal sin, a Catholic needs to go to Confession before receiving Holy Communion. Monthly Confession is a great practice for staying close to God. WEEKLY MASS REMINDER Listen to the prayers of the Mass because what we believe as Catholics is expressed in these prayers. WEEKLY WORK OF MERCY Fast from something today and offer to God for His mercy upon the world. EVANGELIZATION TIP Invite a family member or friend who has been away from Church to come with you to Mass. CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY There is nothing we can desire or want that we do not find in God. ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT The Blessed Sacrament is exposed for private adoration every Friday Afternoon during Lent following Stations of the Cross (1:00 p.m.) until 5:00 p.m. Eucharistic Adoration is an essential part of a vibrant spiritual life. Come and spend some quiet prayerful with the Lord. RCIA CORNER On the Third Sunday of Lent, the Church celebrates the First Scrutiny of the catechumens elected to receive the Easter Sacraments. The scrutinies are meant to uncover, then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect. It brings out, then strengthens all that is upright, strong, and good. Pray that Kayla and all the elect will complete their conversion, deepen their resolve to hold fast to Christ, and to carry out their decision to love God above all. PADUA SPRING FASHION SHOW Come to the Padua Spring Fashion Show, Luncheon, & Raffle sponsored by the Padua Parent Club.
