Once again Jesus in today s Gospel reminds us that it will be costly to follow Him. If you want to be my disciple, you must first of all deny yourself, take up your cross and follow me. For the one who loses his life will find, while the one who seeks to save his life in this world will lose it. We all know that there is a difference between truly living and just existing. To just exist, all you need to have is a bit of food and drink and the power to keep breathing. While it looks like you are alive, in a much deeper sense, you are just taking up space. This is not the way God intends us to be. God wants us to be fully alive. And to do so means that we are alive in His Son, Jesus Christ. To achieve this fullness of life, we must first of all put aside the attitudes and values of the world and take on the heart and mind of Christ. Our old self, alienated from God, will fight this transformation tooth and nail. And like our first birth into natural life, our rebirth into Christ s own life will not come about without its own share of pain. The crossing over from our natural life in order to live our new supernatural life in Jesus Christ will only be accomplished by our taking up the daily struggle of living the Gospel. With the help of Jesus, we pray that this Way of the Cross will safely lead us home to heaven. 1

3 TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 3, 2017 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint John Joseph of the Cross, Priest ( ) Carlo Gaetano Calosirto was born on August 15, 1654 on the island of Ischia off the coast of Naples, Italy. He entered the Order of Friars Minor in Naples before he turned sixteen and assumed the religious name of John Joseph of the Cross. He was the first Italian to follow the reform movement of Saint Peter of Alcantara. In 1674, he was sent to found a convent of for the Alcantarine Reformed Friars in Piedmont and as an act of humility assisted in the actual construction of the friary. He was ordained to the priesthood, much against his will, and as the superior of his community performed the lowliest tasks. In 1702 because of tensions between the Spanish and Italian reformed friars, the Italian convents were formed into a separate province. Saint John Joseph of the Cross was appointed as the Vicar Provincial of the Alcantarine Reform in the Italian peninsula. As the superior he ordered that no beggar should be dismissed from the convent gate without some form of relief: in times of need he devoted to their necessities his own portion of food and even that of the convent he lived at. When he trekked across the mainland as the provincial he would not make himself known at the inns where he lodged because he disliked distinction and did not believe such should be paid to him. Upon his retirement, Saint John Joseph of the Cross dedicated himself to spiritual direction, notably guiding the future saint, Saint Mary Frances of the Five Wounds. Those who knew him reported his many extraordinary graces: a healing power, levitation, prophecy. He died at eighty, after much physical suffering, as he gazed on an image of the Blessed Mother. Saint John Joseph was entombed in the Franciscan Church of Santa Lucia al Monte in Naples also containing the body of Saint Mary Frances of the Five Wounds. His feast day is celebrated on March 5th. RCIA CORNER If you know someone who is interested in becoming Roman Catholic, RCIA begins in September. Contact the rectory if you know of someone interested in joining the Catholic Church. 2 Monday of this week, September 4 th, is Labor Day. Mass for the day will be concelebrated at 9:00 a.m. The Parish Office will closed and will resume regular hours on Tuesday, September 5 th. 50+ SOCIAL CLUB St. Anthony's 50+ Social Club will have our meeting on Thursday, September 7, 2017 in the Hospitality Room of the church. All 50+ers are welcome. The meeting will start at noon with the Rosary and then we will enjoy some pastry, coffee, or tea. We play bingo for $1 a card with all money collected given out as prize money, join other players for a game of Pinnacle cards, or just enjoy the camaraderie with fellow social club members. We hope to see you there! SEMINARIAN OF THE WEEK Let s promote vocations by praying for our diocesan seminarians. Please pray for Michael Petkosek. SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION (ADULTS) The Sacraments help us to live the Christian life. If you are an adult and have never received this Sacrament, contact Fr. Peter at the rectory or by frpeter@stanthonypaduaparma.org. NOW YOU KNOW The St. Anthony s Ladies Guild is an organization open to all ladies of the parish. We meet once a month from September through June. Each meeting includes a fun/ educational program and refreshments and our yearly dues are only $10. Our first meeting will be Tuesday, September 12 at 7:00 PM in the Hospitality Room with an ice-cream social! Some of our other programs planned for this year include speakers on technology & social media and women of aviation & space. Events include Fall flower arranging, our Christmas Mass and dinner, a Lenten program, May crowning, a potluck dinner and more. Fund raisers are also an important part of the Ladies Guild. Our Bake Sales, the Our Town Book sales and Valentine s Raffle have supported the purchase of vestments for the priests and deacon, supplies for our volunteer church cleaners, mulch and flowers for around the Church and more. We invite you to join in as many activities/meetings as you would like. You just may find it an enjoyable evening and look forward to coming back.

PARISH GROUP OF THE WEEK Sunday Coffee and Donuts is a great way to show hospitality to one another and to meet new people at the parish. Coffee and donuts are available after the 8:00am and 10:00am Mass from September to April. Volunteers are called upon two or three times a year to help serve. Our Coffee and Donut ministry begins September 17, To volunteer, please call the rectory office. (440) CONFIRMATION STUDENTS AND PARENTS Confirmation Preparation classes begin September 24, Students will meet at the 10:00 a.m. Mass each week, followed by classroom sessions. Please keep our Confirmandi in your prayers as they prepare for Confirmation on November 8, AIDES AND VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR PSR We are in need of classroom aides, hall monitors and parking lot monitors for the PSR year. It is a wonderful blessing to be part of a child s faith formation. Please prayerfully consider volunteering your time to be part of the PSR program. St. Dominic Savio PARMA, OHIO WELCOME.. The Diocese of Cleveland will be welcoming a new bishop, the Most Rev. Nelson J. Perez, on Sept. 5, There will be two special events at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in downtown Cleveland to mark the arrival of the diocese s 11 th bishop. On Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 4, vespers (evening prayer) will take place at 5:30 p.m. The following day, Tuesday, Sept. 5, Bishop Perez will be installed as the Bishop of Cleveland during Mass beginning at 1:30 p.m. Because of limited seating at the cathedral, both liturgies are by invitation-only and tickets are required. However, there will be several opportunities to view vespers and the installation Mass. Both liturgies will be streamed live online on a special website, bishopperezinstallation.org, and on the diocesan website, dioceseofcleveland.org, as well as on the Diocese of Cleveland Facebook and You Tube pages. The live stream of the vespers will begin at 5:25pm on Monday, September 4. The live stream of installation Mass will begin at 1:30pm on Tuesday, September 5. Live television coverage of the installation Mass will be offered on the EWTN nationwide cable television network, beginning at 2 p.m. Sept. 5. Spectrum Cable is also planning to carry the Mass on Channel In addition, the CatholicTV cable network and radio stations WCCR AM 1260, The Rock, and WILB 1060, Living Bread Radio, will broadcast the installation Mass. Also, Cleveland.com and Ohio.com are expected to stream the installation Mass. Local television stations may carry the installation Mass on their websites, as well. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH EMERGENCY COLLECTION FOR HURRICANE HARVEY The Catholic Diocese of Cleveland and diocese across the country have been asked by the leadership of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to have an emergency collection to assist the victims of Hurricane Harvey. All of us have been following the historic flooding in southeast Texas as Hurricane Harvey has created an unprecedented and catastrophic weather event of immense proportions. This emergency collection will be used both to support the humanitarian and recovery efforts of Catholic Charities USA and to provide pastoral and rebuilding support to impacted diocese through the USCCB. In support of this major relief effort, St. Anthony will have a special collection which will take place next weekend, September 9-10, All checks should be made payable to St. Anthony of Padua with the memo line marked Emergency Collection for Hurricane Harvey. Thank you. SUNDAY PRESCHOOL Parents of 3, 4, and 5 year olds, we are now taking registrations for our Sunday preschool program. Classes are held on Sunday mornings from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the school. PARMA, OHIO POTLUCK AND A MOVIE All women are invited to join the Women s Faith Ministry on Sunday, October 1 from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the Hospitality Room at St. Anthony for a potluck dinner followed by the movie War Room. The movie focuses on a family who seemingly have it all. But as they go through tough times, a new friend helps them find happiness through prayer as they develop their own War Room where prayer and discernment lead to resolution. PRO-LIFE MINISTRY St. Anthony Pro-Life Ministry will once again sponsor a Krispy-Kreme Doughnut sale fund raiser September 9/10 after all the Masses. All proceeds from the sale will go to organizations that help mothers to save babies from abortion. Cost of the doughnuts are $3.50 for 6 or $7.00 per dozen. Please support this important cause. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Our Bingo program is in need of volunteers to help as bingo callers, instant bingo ticket sellers and floor workers. You do not have to commit to working every week, just a few hours of your time even once a month will help. Details about the positions may be obtained by calling the rectory (440) and leaving your name and number for a representative from bingo to call you back, or stop by Bingo any Thursday in the lower level of the school and speak with Gerry.
