4 From the Desk of Deacon Andy Dear Friends, As I come to the end of my time as MGC Parish Director, I want to thank all those responsible for the reception last week and for all the kind words and thoughts directed my way. It has truly been an honor on my part to have served in that capacity these past four years. Although I am stepping away from that position, please know that I am planning to continue to serve the parish in my role as Deacon --- so I ll still be around and available, just not as often. Ellen and I will have more time to get away and I will be able to tackle some of those household chores that have been neglected for awhile. As I turn the reins of the parish over to Fr. Reed, I d like to also thank all the staff members, Council members, committee members, and many volunteers who help to keep this parish running smoothly and fulfilling its mission. As I ve said many times before, it really takes us all working together to accomplish the good work that is done here. I am also turning this space over to Fr. Reed as well. I have very much enjoyed communicating with you via these letters. Relying on my background as an educator, I have tried to make them informative and thoughtprovoking. I hope you have found them worthwhile as well. And although I won t be communicating with you via this space, you may have to listen to me preach once in awhile in my Deacon role (so you don t get rid of me completely.) Finally, I will continue to do all I can to work effectively with Fr. Reed and the Council to further the mission of MGC. I know you will join me in that effort. 5 Memory Cafés Tuesday, July 17, :30-3pm Milwaukee Public Library~ Capitol Branch 3969 N 74th St Memory Cafés offer people with dementia and their care partners the opportunity to enjoy regular, enjoyable social interaction with others in similar circumstances in a safe, welcoming environment. The Cafes will be held the third Tuesday of every month at a rotating list of Milwaukee Public Libraries. Each café will offer a fun, interactive program along with refreshments. Reed please call ext 103. Senior Ministry Corner As a follow-up to his talk on Alzheimer s caregivers, former Gov. Schreiber sends this message (in light of the summer solstice the longest day of the year): Care giving doesn t take days off. I call these, the longest days plural. Regardless of date/time/ year, that love to me encompasses appreciation and respect for caregivers. I m also deeply grateful to the Association for its support of those who live with and/or care for someone affected by Alzheimer s disease, and its work to find a cure. On the longest day and every day, I continue to direct my energy to raise awareness about Alzheimer s caregivers because of the stress they experience on their bodies and minds, I invite you to join me to reach out to someone who lives with Alzheimer s, or is an Alzheimer s caregiver. Join their world. Show love, give your time and attention and tell a caregiver that he or she is doing a super job. We who care for those with Alzheimer s conquer obstacles that seem to come out of nowhere because we must. Our loved ones depend on us.
