4 From the Desk of Deacon Andy Dear Friends, I ve often had discussions with others regarding what it means to be Catholic --- perhaps you have also. My first response is that we Catholics follow the gospel of Jesus Christ, especially his command to love God and to love our neighbor, what he identified as the two greatest of all commandments. But then the discussion goes on and usually gets into the essentials of our Catholic faith. The question of what is essential and what is not essential to Catholic belief is most certainly an age-old question, existing from the early days of the Church. And in response to that question, the Church developed various Creeds over the years. The Creed that we usually recite at our weekend Masses today is the Nicene Creed, based on an early baptismal creed and essentially developed at the Council of Nicaea in the year 325. As we probably don t always think about what we re saying when we recite the Creed, I thought it would be worthwhile to spend the next few weeks going over it point-by-point. This should serve as a good review of our beliefs and help us re-focus our thoughts on the essentials of our faith before we head into Lent. We begin by proclaiming, I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. Our belief in one God is the basis for everything else we believe. That belief in God is a free choice for each of us, an act of fundamental trust. In a world torn by suffering and strife, when many question the existence of God, our belief in God is based on our following of Jesus Christ, who called God his Father and who preached that God was near to us and so loved us even more than any parent could love his children. Jesus taught us that God s glory shone through the darkness of evil and he staked his own life on God s ultimate victory over sin and death. In stating that God is the maker of all things, we proclaim God as not only our Creator, but as creator of everything else in the world as well. By stating this we really answer the question of why we are here and what the ultimate meaning of our life is, and that is to return to the Father. The story of Creation in Genesis teaches us that God made us to be happy in this world and to live in communion with him and with each other. Believing in God is saying that life has meaning and we believe in the eternal destiny and sacred dignity of every human being. Our discussion of the Creed continues next week. Peace, Deacon Andy Prayer Group The Praying For Those With Addictions Prayer Group will resume on January 15th at 6:30 pm in the MGC parish living room. Anyone interested in joining is welcome!.
