3 JMJ THE MERCIFUL HEART OF JESUS On one occasion, the Scribes and the Pharisees led a woman forward that had been caught in adultery. They made her stand in front of everyone. Teacher they said to Jesus, This woman has been caught in the act of adultery. In the Law, Moses ordered such women to be stoned. What do you have to say about the case? They were posing this question to trap Him so that they could have something to accuse Him of. Jesus bent down and started tracing some words on the ground with his finger. When they persisted in their questioning. He straightened up and said to them. Let the man among you who has no sin be the first to cast a stone at her. A second time he bent down and wrote on the ground. Then the audience drifted away one by one, beginning with the elders. This left Him alone with the woman, who continued to stand there before Him, Jesus finally straightened up and said to her, Woman, where did they all disappear to? Has no one condemned you? No one, sir, she answered Jesus said, Nor I condemn you. You may go. But from now on, avoid this sin. Jesus: There was no need for her to say anything. You should have seen the joy on her face. The healing which took place that day in her heart motivated her to become one of my most faithful followers. Disciple: I get a very strong feeling that you were very understanding of those who sin in a moment of passion or because of human weakness. But what about those who have no time for you? What about those who ignore you and your teaching? Jesus: Read what Mathew said in chapter 20 beginning with verse 1 The Laborers in the Vineyard. The reign of God is like the case of the owner of an estate who went out at dawn to hire workmen for his vineyard. After reaching an agreement with them for the usual daily wage, he sent them out to his vineyard. He came out about midmorning and saw other men standing around the market place without work, so he said to them, You too go along to my vineyard and I will pay you whatever is fair. At that they went away. He came out again around noon and mid-afternoon and did the same. Finally, going out in late afternoon he found still others standing around. To these he said. Why have you been standing here idle all day? No one has hired us, they told him. He said You go to the vineyard too. When evening came the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, Call the workmen and give them their pay, but begin with the last group and end with the first. Jesus: There is no one who is not the object of my love. What you have just read is meant to remind the very people you were talking about, that it is never too late to change. The good thief at Calvary knew this and that is why he is now in Heaven. It wasn t until his last hour on earth that he responded to my love. Disciple: Lord, when one thinks about it, these passages clearly prove your love. Jesus: If people would only stop thinking that I judge as they do. In Mathew 20 beginning with verse 1, I told the story of the Talents. It is worth noting that while one servant received five talents and other two, both received the same reward. It is my love which allows me to do that. Disciple: Would it be true to say that your miracles were also a way of expressing your love? Jesus: You could say that. In some cases I needed to work miracles to prove that I was really the Son of God. But mostly they were expressions of my love and acknowledgment of people s faith in me. Sister Celia Gpe.
