It was necessary and for two reasons easily to understand: The first one, to put a remedy to our sins; the other one, to give us an example of how we should act. In order to put a remedy to our sins, because in the passion of Christ we find the remedy against all the evils that come to us, which cause is sin. The second reason also has its importance, since the passion of Christ is enough to serve of a guide and model to all our life. Anybody who wants to have a perfect life, does not need to do any other thing than despise what Christ despised on the Cross, and to want all that Christ wanted. In the Cross we find the example of all the virtues. If you look for an example of love: nobody has more love than, the one who gives his life for his friends. This is what Christ did on the Cross. And for this reason, if He gave his life for us, we should not consider grievous any pain we have to suffer for Him. If you look for an example of patience, we will find the best of them in the Cross. Two things are the measure of patience: to suffer patiently great evils, or to suffer them without rejecting some evils that could be avoided. We know that Christ suffered in the Cross great evils and He suffered them patiently, since in his passion He did not cry out threats; He acted like a meek lamb, He was taken to be crucified; He was quiet, quiet, silent; He did not open his mouth. Great was Jesus patience on the Cross: Let us run the race with firmness and constancy for us, prepared. Let us have our eyes fixed in Jesus, our Commander of the faith, in order to receive the joy that was offered to Him, He suffered with great constancy the Cross, passing over his humiliation. If you look for an example of humility, look at the Crucified: He who is God, wanted to be judged under the power of Pontius Pilate. If you look for an example of obedience, imitate Him, who became obedient to the Father, even to the death on the Cross. How for the disobedience of one man: Adam, everybody were constituted sinners, thus by the obedience of only One, everybody will be constituted just. If you look for an example of despising earthly things imitate Him who is the King of kings and Lord of lords, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and of Science, naked on the Cross, humiliated, spat upon, scourged, crowned with a crown of thorns, to whom finally they gave Him gall and vinegar. Do not grow fond of the clothing and richness, since they cast lots on my tunic, not to the honors, since I received mockery and lashes, not to dignities, since they fixed a crown of thorns on my head, not to pleasures, since in my thirst they gave me vinegar.
