1 St. Thomas Aquinas Iglesia Católica Romana Dear Parishioners, 1501 South Atlantic Boulevard Monterey Park, California Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 15, 2018 From the desk of our Pastor Thank you for celebrating My 20th year of Ordination and 5th year as Pastor I thank everyone of you for celebrating with me my 20 th year of ordination and my 5th year as pastor. I am very grateful for your prayers and gifts you shared with me. May we continue to work as a team in ministering to one another. School Side Parking Lot/Playground and Lunch Area get new Look We are grateful to Bishop David O Connell from our San Gabriel Pastoral Region who made it possible for us to get a grant to assist us in fixing the parking lot on the side of the school. The work will consist of putting one and half inches of asphalt in the parking lot and flag pole area of the school, a concrete slab under the blue canopy lunch area of the school, and re-striping the parking stalls and game lines. The total cost will be about $80,000, of which we will pay half. The work will begin on Monday, July 16 and should be completed within ten days. Restrooms Remodeling Our restrooms remodeling will also begin this week. The construction should take approximately 90 days. During the construction period, we shall have a portable restroom located between the church and school building. Additional funding is needed for this project, tiles will be sold after all Masses next weekend. Please keep our projects in your prayers. 2 Jesus Homecoming: Mk 6:1-6. By Sr. Rocio Nieto, HMSP In Jesus hometown of Nazareth the people are amazed by what they hear, but they also cannot comprehend how someone pretend to know so well might move them so powerfully. But who is Jesus? His kinfolk in Nazareth might know the carpenter, the son of Mary, but they do not know Jesus, the Son of God. I think that in this Gospel Mark by showing that Jesus himself was rejected, he consoles and reassures his readers. He also prepares us to accept this possible consequence of Christian discipleship. We are familiar with things where we live. We also generally follow routines. Many of our daily actions are done without even thinking about them. We know the people we live and work with. We know the cracks in the ceiling and many other little things. We may not pay conscious attention to all of these little details, but we are accustomed to them. Our concept of home is built on these ideas of familiarity, routine, communication and identity. Home is more than the physical place in which we live. Home is associated with all of the people, actions, feelings, emotions and cues that make us feel at home. When you return you may be surprised by the fact that your friends may have changed or relationships that were once strong may no longer be the same. Wherever you come to, expect to see and feel changes. Probably as Jesus experienced, people are no longer as interested in hearing you anymore. They saw everything, but didn t know who He really was. We can realize that God entered directly into human history and lived in a particular place, at a specific time, in a unique culture, only to show Himself to us and save us. Many people misunderstood Jesus. I can also imagine what would happen if we took the time to get to know Jesus even more? What if we went with Him everyday in prayer or through His Word to know Him better and really understand His message? Let us keep our eyes fixed on Him walking together to be witnesses of His Mercy and then our faith finally will be stronger! National Needs Combined Collection July 21st & 22nd Next weekend, July 21 & 22, the second collection will be for the National Needs Combined Collection. This appeal supports Black and Indian Missions, Catholic University of America, Catholic Communications Campaign (CCC), and Catholic Home Missions Appeal (CHMA). Your gift strengthens the at home, and helps to provide basic pastoral resources and services to needy ethnic communities. We thank you in advance for your support. Senior Group Reagan Library Trip Wednesday, August 8th Our senior group has planned a day trip to the Ronald Reagan library on Wednesday, August 8, We will leave the church parking lot at 9:00 AM. Besides visiting the library s exhibits and beautiful gardens, we also visit a special exhibit about Genghis Khan, the great civilizer and lawmaker, whose empire brought each of these innovations to the west, including 13th Century Mongolian style democracy. Cost for the trip is $30 per person, which includes access to all permanent and special exhibits and transportation to and from the library. Seniors who signed up at the last senior gathering are asked to contact the parish office to confirm your reservation. Seniors get priority. Food may be purchased at the library cafeteria or the local Irish pub. All are invited. Seating is limited. Call the office to reserve your ticket today!

3 My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, St. Thomas Aquinas parish is pleased to announce nine (9) new members selected to serve on the Pastoral Council. They are: David Lau Yu Yu Cheng Vicki Tang Dennis Rodriguez Leobardo Ledon George Rico Yolie Moreno-Rico Adrian Rendon Jesus Torres The selection of these new council members followed the Archdiocese Guide for Pastoral Councils and completes a process that started in May with the announcement and solicitation of nominees from the parishioners. Many parishioners were nominated and we thank everyone who took the time to nominate a parishioner and all the nominees who participated in the process. All nominees brought with them the spirit and passion of service to God, the Parish and their fellow parishioners and their time and interest are appreciated. It s also appropriate to acknowledge and thank the five outgoing council members for their service over the past year. Although they will no longer be on the council their talents and passion to serve remains strong among them. Thank you: Tom Cody Maria Garcia Alex Mena Sergio Garcia Teresa Lopez The Council s role is to assist the pastor in developing a parish pastoral plan and providing input on issues of pastoral concern. The Council meets monthly. New members will be commissioned at all Masses next weekend. Please help and welcome this new council and pray for them in their new roles. 5 SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Plan ahead for safe, fun summer trips Amusement parks are great places to make memories as a family, but it s important to plan ahead to maximize fun and keep everyone safe. Go over the family rules in advance, and refresh information on the way there. Make sure that everyone follows the buddy system, with at least two people together at all times. Pick a predetermined meet-up site in the event of separations, and show children where they can go for help (information desk, park security).
