3 JHS In the film Love Story we heard the expression: To love means never to have to say I am sorry. In reality it is just the opposite. Who loves is ready and willing to say I forgive as often as it is necessary. St. Paul in his famous song of love, he writes to the people in Corinth in Chapter XIII, Love is patient, ready to serve and with no envy. It does not want to pretend, nor does he want to be important. He does not look for his own interest. Here is where the complete idea of the lack of forgiveness, bitterness and resentment is situated. Paul says. love does not allow anger to take over, but instead forget the offenses and forgives. It never rejoices on something unfair, unjust and he always loves the truth. Love excuses all, believes all, expects all and endures all. (Corinthians 13:4-7) If we could extend ourselves in this topic, we could add: Love is not bitter: or the lover does not say I cannot forgive, or I will not forgive you. READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Rom 1:1-7; Ps 98:1-4; Lk 11:29-32 Tuesday: Rom 1:16-25; Ps 19:2-5; Lk 11:37-41 Wednesday: 2 Tm 4:10-17b; Ps 145:10-13, 17-18; Lk 10:1-9 Thursday: Rom 3:21-30; Ps 130:1b-6ab; Lk 11:47-54 Friday: Rom 4:1-8; Ps 32:1b-2, 5, 11; Lk 12:1-7 Saturday: Rom 4:13, 16-18; Ps 105:6-9, 42-43; Lk 12:8-12 More specifically is (1 John 2:9-11), If someone pretends to be in the light and hates his brother, he is still in darkness. He who loves his brother, remains in the light and there are not in him circumstances to fall. On the other hand who hates his brother is in darkness and he walks in darkness without knowing where he goes, because the darkness has blinded him The Holy Spirit is light and the demon is darkness. In St. John Epistles there is constant distinction between light and darkness. There is a constant conflict between the two. The Holy Spirit comes to bring light, to illuminate, to give us happiness and to take us out of the darkness. In the story of The prodigal Son (Lc. 15:11/32) we can see the difference between light and darkness. We can see the light in the Father s attitude, which is the one of the complete forgiveness. We can see the darkness in the older brother, which is the one who denies is forgiveness and the one of resentment toward the prodigal son and the Father. In the story the Father does not mention anything that would be wrong. On the contrary, he says. Let us rejoice because this son of mine was dead and has come back to life, he was lost and I have found him. (Lc 15:24) This is light, this is forgiveness. We can think of the beauty of this scene, of the old man, dressed in elegant attire and using jewelry, running anxiously to greet his lost son. In the Jewish culture, a man of dignity never runs; nevertheless, this Jewish man of dignity runs on the road to greet his son. Meanwhile in returning to the house, the older brother was hiding himself in the darkness. And listening to the music and the dance asked himself what was happening. We can see the older brother as an individual concentrated on himself telling his Father; I have always obeyed and I have gotten nothing for it. I have not gotten anything for being faithful; and my brother went away for years, throwing all your money and when he returns you prepare a feast for him. This older brother concentrated in himself judged his younger brother and did not say anything of the tremendous load that has been taken away from his Father s shoulders, instead to be happy and rejoicing with the father, he reacts selfishly. This is darkness. This is lack of forgiveness, it is bitterness and resentment. We can see light in the Father s attitude and darkness in the negative attitude of the older brother. Dear Lord, Jesus Christ, help us to acquire a generous and compassionate heart a heart that forgives others when they have offended us and ask forgiveness when we have offend others.
