3 OCTOBER 31-NOVEMBER 1, 2015 The Pastor s Corner THE REDINGS FOR THIS WEEK LL SINTS It should not surprise you that many of the saints were inspired by other saints. They either read books of lives of the saints or were drawn to a particular saint. Some saints even walked together throughout life. It is inspiring to realize how each of us can truly help elevate each other s spiritual life by being humble enough to allow the Lord to lead us in this journey. Unfortunately, though, most people are not willing to allow the Lord to have the steering wheel. We want to steer the wheel of life ourselves, as we see fit, and relativism helps feed this. Relativism is an understanding that there is no truth in the world, that everything is a matter of opinion. Fortunately, we know that there is Truth. Truth came down from heaven and walked this earth. That Truth is named Jesus. nd we are so fortunate He continues to come to us through the Eucharist, the Word proclaimed, the priest in the sacraments, and the people of God themselves. If we follow the Truth, we, too, can become saints, but we have to have the courage to turn away from self-absorption. s are people who put God first, but they are also just like us. Many of them struggled mightily to do God s will, but they came to know the Lord and they changed their hearts to accept Him and follow His path with a willingness to serve and to suffer for the good of God s kingdom. I am so thankful to all of our little saints who joined us by dressing up for this beautiful feast day. Let us thank God for all of our saints in heaven this day. men? men! The GUIDE to HEVEN Revelation 7:2-4, 9-14 Psalm 24:1-6 1 John 3:1-3 Matthew 5:1-12 Who are these people all dressed in white? nd where have they come from? Revelation 7:13 Today we thank God for saving and sanctifying the saints on earth and in heaven. We especially thank Him for taking our family members, relatives, and friends to be with Him in heaven. We look forward to becoming holy and joining Jesus and the holy family in heaven. We cannot do this by our own power but we can let it be done to us (see Lk 1:38). The Father and the Son have sent the Holy Spirit to make us holy. ll we have to do is obey by following the lead of the Spirit (Gal 5:25). However, this is difficult to do because our flesh (human nature) lusts against the Spirit (Gal 5:17). There is a strong opposition between what we naturally want and what the Spirit wants. Therefore, to let the Spirit make us saints, we must allow the Spirit to crucify our flesh with its passions and desires (Gal 5:24). We must let the Holy Spirit take us to the cross to crucify us to the world (Gal 6:14). In this way, we become holy, able to be like our Father and see Him as He is (1 Jn 3:2; see also Heb 12:14). Holiness is the fruit of the Spirit, not the fruit of our efforts. ll saints have been produced by the Spirit. Receive the Holy Spirit (Jn 20:22). Life in the Spirit leads to life in heaven. Prayer: Holy Spirit, guide me to all truth (Jn 16:13). Guide me to heaven. Promise: How blest are the poor in spirit: the reign of God is theirs. Mt 5:3 Praise: Praise Jesus, Who is the Light of the world! Praise the Holy Spirit, the saint-maker! (Reprinted with permission from One Bread, One Body at 3
4 SINT CECILI ROMN CTHOLIC PRISH CLO SER L OOK T O UR FITH KNOW YOUR SINTS CTECHESIS (kat i-ke sis) n. What is love? Love is the free self-giving of the heart. [2346] To have a heart full of love means to be so pleased with something that one emerges from oneself and devotes oneself to it. musician can devote himself to a masterpiece. kindergarten teacher can be there wholeheartedly for her charges. In every friendship there is love. The most beautiful form of love on earth, however, is the love between man and woman, in which two people give themselves to each other forever. ll human love is an image of divine love, in which all love is at home. Love is the inmost being of the Triune God. In God there is continual exchange and perpetual self-giving. Through the overflowing of divine love, we participate in the eternal love of God. The more a person loves, the more he resembles God. Love should influence the whole life of a person, but it is realized with particular depth and symbolism when man and woman love one another in marriage and become one Flesh (Genesis 2:24). (YOUCT question 402) Holy Hour for Vocations to the Priesthood Sunday, November 8, 5 6 PM Chapel of St. Gregory the Great at Mount St. Mary s Seminary St. Nicholas Tavelic and Companions {d. 1391) Nicholas and his three companions are among the 158 Franciscans who have been martyred in the Holy Land since the friars became custodians of the shrines in Nicholas was born in 1340 to a wealthy and noble family in Croatia. He joined the Franciscans and was sent with Deodat of Rodez to preach in Bosnia. In 1384 they volunteered for the Holy Land missions and were sent there. They looked after the holy places, cared for the Christian pilgrims and studied rabic. In 1391 Nicholas, Deodat, Peter of Narbonne and Stephen of Cuneo decided to take a direct approach to converting the Muslims. On November 11, 1391, they went to the huge Mosque of Omar in Jerusalem and asked to see the Qadi (Muslim official). Reading from a prepared statement, they said that all people must accept the gospel of Jesus. When they were ordered to retract their statement, they refused. fter beatings and imprisonment, they were beheaded before a large crowd. Nicholas and his companions were canonized in They are the only Franciscans martyred in the Holy Land to be canonized. GRET CTHOLIC RESOURCES We have an exceptional selection of CDs in the Our Lady of Perpetual Help chapel in the back of church. This month s featured CD is based upon a proven and powerful parish mission presentation. Fr. Larry Richards s talk on Confession has become the #1 talk in North merica dealing with the Sacrament of Reconciliation. He is riveting, honest, humorous, very human, and often touchingly gentle. Each disc is $3. Your donation may be placed in the candle offering box in the chapel. 4
5 PSTO R S RMBLIN GS OCTOBER 31-NOVEMBER 1, 2015 WOMEN S CONFERENCE: We had a very nice-size group of St. women (photo, above) attend the Catholic Women s Conference. I heard so many wonderful things about each of the speakers and how fruitful it was to attend. There were three main speakers, Mass with the archbishop and some time for prayer and socialization. The vendors also had some quality Catholic items that were well displayed in Our Lady of Victory s gymnasium. I hope more of our parishioners will be able to attend in the future. I heard confessions during the conference. I was glad I could be a part of it as were other priests in the archdiocese. Thank you to all of the women who put this day together DOZEN COOKIES BKED: One of the nice aspects of the Kairos Prison Ministry is the provision of cookies. It brings some joy to those who are incarcerated. The Word of God is brought into the prison through those who deliver the cookies. Thank you to Jerry Davis for delivering the cookies, and thanks to all of those who baked cookies for such a special cause. 1 WELCOME, CHILDREN OF GOD: On Oct. 18, three parishioners were baptized. Please welcome Henry Robert (photo, below left), son of Erik and Kari Dunki-Jacobs; Eloise Marie (photo, below center), daughter of Brian and llison Goke; and Beatrice my (photo, below right), daughter of Mark and bigail Mitchell. 1 SOCCER FINLE: I was able to go watch my nephew Eddie (photo, top right) play his last soccer game of the season for St. Xavier High School. It was fun to see what a good soccer player he has become. Hopefully, I will be able to attend more games in the years to come. 1 PRISHIONERS VISIT BEUTIFUL CHURCH: lex and Jeff Koehn (photo, below left) recently travelled to Chicago where they visited St. John Cantius Church, a baroque Polish cathedral near downtown, which was completed in Interstate and urban development gutted the parish in the 1960s and 70s, but the parish was reborn under the leadership of pastor Rev. C. Frank Phillips who arrived in They highly recommend a visit to this beautiful sacred place if you find yourself in the neighborhood. 1 CONGRTULTIONS! David Winterhalter and Nicole Feldman (photo, below left) celebrated the Sacrament of Matrimony on Oct. 18. David is in our choir and also an Elder grad. It was a very beautiful wedding. John Covington and Kathleen Riordan (photo, below right) were married here on Oct. 11. Kathleen volunteered to help with our flea market this year and was a huge help. Please keep these two wonderful couples in your prayers. 1 REST IN PECE: Longtime parishioner Mary Gehlert passed from this life and into the next on Oct. 11. Mary was 83 years old. Joe Fondacaro led a prayer service for Mary at Clepper and Kelsch Funeral Home on Oct. 16. May eternal rest be granted to her, O Lord. 5

7 OCTOBER 31-NOVEMBER 1, 2015 STEWRDSHIP OF PRYER Please keep in prayer Marlene Jimmerson, Russ O Brien, and Wendy Zepf, that they may receive God s healing grace. ll requests are honored for two weeks with the individual s or family s approval. Contact Barb Browarsky at the parish office, (513) , ext. 202, with intention requests. PRY, MINISTER, ND GIVE FROM WHT YOU HVE The month of October was focused especially on stewardship prayer, ministry and finance. t each Mass, a parishioner gave testimony to the benefits they have received through engagement in St. through stewardship. The invitation was given to all, especially to those who are not yet involved some way in parish life, to prayerfully consider what each can contribute to build God s storehouse St. Parish through time, talent and treasure. The point has been made that St. is a successful, vibrant parish. There are many people involved in parish ministry and prayer, and St. certainly has its generous contributors. But the fact remains that human nature will allow mediocrity to settle in while everyone assumes all is well. But people get tired, people have babies, people move out of town, people die. That is why it is important that all members of the parish make a commitment to become committed stewards. We make these humble attempts to cultivate the responsibility of parish stewardship. God asks us to be good and faithful stewards in all that we do. We need to prayerfully consider our response to His call. Take to heart the story about the four people named Everybody, Somebody, nybody and Nobody. job was needed to be done and Everybody was asked to help. Everybody was sure Somebody would do it. Really, nybody could have done it, but who ended up doing it? Nobody. Now Somebody got angry, because it was Everybody s job. Everybody thought nybody could do it, but Nobody realized Everybody wouldn t do it. So it ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what nybody could have done. nd yet there is a fifth person in this story Someone Else. Someone Else did far more than nybody s share of the work. Whenever Somebody mentioned leadership, Everyone always looked to Someone Else for inspiration and results. When there was a job to do or a need to be filled, one name was always given Someone Else. Everybody knew Someone Else was a generous giver of time and money. Whenever there was a need, Nobody never doubted that Someone Else would step up, be generous and help out. Somebody, nybody and Everybody always assumed that Someone Else would make up the difference. But now Someone Else is gone and is no longer with us. Now Somebody, nybody, Everybody must rise to the task, lest Nobody does it. prime example St. Parish can potentially lose $100,000 income this year because Nobody will make the commitment to chair the festival! Can you be that Someone Else who will step up and take the challenge? St. Parish, in order to attract caring individuals and families, in order to grow strong and continue to be the bright beacon of our Catholic faith in the Oakley community, needs Somebody, nybody, Everybody to help. Don t leave the role of stewardship to Someone Else. Everybody needs to be involved. Make your commitment today. The particular portions of the One Faith, One Hope, One Love archdiocesan campaign have been highlighted these past several weeks education, social services, vocations, and priest retirement. nother component of the campaign is our own local parish. 20% of all the funds raised here at St. will return to our parish. In addition, when we meet our parish goal of $833,000, then 60% of all additional funds will be returned to St.. We have earmarked these monies to fund direct street access into the school cafeteria area, providing an entry for handicapped and wheelchair bound guests. lso, air-conditioning for the new space is also a priority for these funds. To date St. has reached a total of $623,700 in pledges from a total of 41 gifts. This total represents 75% of our overall goal. Parish families will continue to be personally contacted in the coming weeks. Please be welcoming when a parish volunteer calls upon you.
