3 PRIL 9-10, 2016 The Pastor s Corner THE REDINGS FOR THIS WEEK Help Jesus in Disguise Catholic Relief Services Each time we encounter a suffering person, we encounter Jesus in disguise. The Catholic Relief Services Collection funds six Catholic agencies that serve the disguised Jesus in our suffering brothers and sisters around the world. His disguise might be that of those suffering from natural disaster, those displaced by violence or war, or those migrants searching for a better life. Your support of this collection is an opportunity to help Jesus in disguise. With your donations, we can Feed Jesus hunger in suffering refugees... through the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Department of Migration and Refugee Services. 2. Give water to quench Jesus thirst in the people of Bolivia and Ethiopia... through the humanitarian work of Catholic Relief Service. 3. Offer legal assistance to Jesus in struggling immigrants... through the Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. 4. Reach out to comfort Jesus loneliness in isolated workers... through the pastoral work of the USCCB Secretariat of Cultural Diversity in the Church. 5. dvocate on behalf of Jesus in the poor and abandoned... through the public policy work of the USCCB Department of Justice, Peace and Human Development. 6. Send aid to Jesus in the victims of natural disasters... through the Holy Father s Relief Fund. cts 5:27-32, Psalm 30:2, 4-6, Revelation 5:11-14 John 21:1-19 The apostles for their part left the Sanhedrin full of joy that they had been judged worthy of ill-treatment for the sake of the Name. cts 5:41 Peter went back into the fishing business and quit following Jesus (see Jn 21:3). He probably did this because of his long-standing problems with Jesus command to take up the cross. When Jesus had first mentioned the cross to His disciples, Peter had downplayed the whole thing. Then Jesus turned on Peter and said, Get out of My sight, you satan! (Mt 16:23) Peter had made plans to stay on the mountain of the Transfiguration rather than go into the valley of suffering and death on the cross (see Mt 17:4). When Jesus was about to die on the cross, Peter had denied Him three times. Therefore, it s reasonable to surmise that Peter went back into the fishing business to escape the cross. The risen Jesus then intervened. He caught Peter s attention by telling the disciples how to catch 153 fish at one time (Jn 21:11). Later, after repeatedly asking Peter if he loved Him, Jesus indicated the sort of death by which Peter was to glorify God (Jn 21:19). Jesus began to show Peter that he would not only carry a cross but die on one. The Holy Spirit eventually guided Peter to the full truth (Jn 16:13) about his own death on the cross. Finally, Peter imitated Jesus to the point that he too died on a cross. The risen Jesus is quietly running after you with a cross to give you. If you re running from the cross, you re running from the risen Christ. Let Him catch you. Be the fish Jesus catches. Father, may I come to the point that I will boast of nothing but the cross. Gal 6:14 (Reprinted with permission from One Bread, One Body at 3

4 SINT CECILI ROMN CTHOLIC PRISH CLO S E R L OOK T OUR FITH KNOW YOUR SINTS CTECHESIS (kat i-ke sis) n. Through his Resurrection, did Jesus return to the physical, corporeal state that he had during his earthly life? The risen Lord allowed his disciples to touch him; he ate with them and showed them the wounds of his passion. Nevertheless, his body belonged no longer only to this earth, but rather to the heavenly kingdom of his Father. [ ] The risen Christ, who bore the wounds of the crucified, was no longer bound by space and time. He could enter through locked doors and appear to his disciples in various places in a form in which they did not recognize him immediately. Christ s resurrection was, therefore, not a return to a normal earthly life, but rather his entrance into a new way of being: We know that Christ, raised from the dead, dies no more; death no longer has power over Him. Romans 6:9 (YOUCT question 107) St. dalbert of Prague ( ) Opposition to the good news of Jesus did not discourage dalbert, who is now remembered with great honor in the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Germany. Born to a noble family in Bohemia, he received part of his education from St. dalbert of Magdeburg. t the age of 27 he was chosen as bishop of Prague. Those who resisted his program of clerical reform forced him into exile eight years later. In time, the people of Prague requested his return as their bishop. Within a short time, however, he was exiled again after excommunicating those who violated the right of sanctuary by dragging a woman accused of adultery from a church and murdering her. fter a short ministry in Hungary, he went to preach the good news to people living near the Baltic Sea. He and two companions were martyred by pagan priests in that region. dalbert s body was immediately ransomed and buried in Gniezno Cathedral (Poland). In the mid-11 th century his relics were moved to St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague. PRTICIPTING IN THE JUBILEE YER OF MERCY THIS WEEK, WE SHLL REFLECT ON THE FIFTH CORPORL WORK OF MERCY. The Corporal Works of Mercy are found in the teachings of Jesus and give us a model for how we should treat all others, as if they were Christ in disguise. They are charitable actions by which we help our neighbors in their bodily needs (USCCB). They respond to the basic needs of humanity as we journey together through this life. VISIT THE PRISONERS People in prison are still people, made in the image and likeness of God. No matter what someone has done, they deserve the opportunity to hear the Word of God and find the Truth of the message of Christ. Volunteer to help out or donate to charities that give Christmas presents to children whose parents are in prison. Get involved in a local prison ministry. 4

5 CHRISM MSS: I was thrilled to have some of our parishioners (photo, below) join me at the Chrism Mass, during which the holy oils were blessed and my brother priests and I renewed our vows to the priesthood. fterward I celebrated with Fr. ndy Umberg (photo, below left), who recently celebrated 25 years as a priest. 1 P S TOR S R MBLINGS PRIL 9-10, 2016 nnunciation, which is a rarity. This will occur next in the year In this case, the Feast of the nnunciation is moved to the Monday following the octave of Easter. The interesting connection is that we see Mary blessed with this Child, yet we know providential history tells us that she will also see Him die. 1 VIGIL MSS ND RECEPTION: t our Vigil HOLY THURSDY: Our Holy Thursday liturgy (photos, above right) turned out so beautifully. Our servers were well prepared, thanks to our seminarian Chris Komoroski. Thank you to the Worship Spring Team for getting everyone ready for their roles for this Mass. Thanks to all of our Mass ministers and also to our choir, which received many compliments for the wonderful music. 1 LTR OF REPOSE: It is always special to see people praying at our ltar of Repose on Holy Thursday evening. Even with inclement weather, we had people adoring until midnight. I enjoy setting up this altar (photo, left) each year, sharing some of the pieces of my collection and making the altar a moving place to pray. 1 GOOD FRIDY: This year Good Friday (photo, upper right) landed on the same day as the feast of the Mass, 16 catechumens and candidates received sacraments of initiation. I want to thank Cody Egner and the RCI sponsors for helping the initiates prepare for this day. The Mass and reception (photos, below) were well attended by parishioners and guests, and many complimented the well-done liturgy. 5

Cookies for Kairos s part of the Kairos Prison Ministry, there is an upcoming retreat for the men in Lucasville State Penitentiary. This four-day program, modeled on the Catholic Cursillo, is a life-changing, soul-saving experience for many of these men who may have never had Christ in their lives. The people who donated, cooked and served the wonderful food are a key part in making this weekend a success because some people hear about the cookies and good food and that s all they intend to get from this weekend. But while they re there they end up hearing something that resonates with them and makes them a believer. nd I say this from personal experience. Sincerely, thank you. -Jordan, Southern Ohio Correctional Facility It is a Kairos tradition to give every inmate and prison employee two dozen home-baked, prayed-over cookies. That s 48,000 cookies. You are invited to be a part of the Kairos Prison Ministry by baking cookies. Cookie bags, with specific instructions, will be available after this weekend s Masses. The baked cookies need to be dropped off in the back of church next weekend by 11:00 M on Sunday, pr. 17.
