4 Performing Choirs are: St. Basil's Church Choir, St. George's Church Choir, St. John's Orthodox Cathedral Choir, Ukrainian Male Chorus of Edmonton, AXIOS, Verkhovyna, Zemlia Vocal Trio. Donations at the door will support "Guardian Angels Ukraine" to support the medical treatment, rehabilitation, and social integration of Ukraine's wounded soldiers. Volunteers are the life-blood of our Church community and we look forward to working with you on our Parish team! VOLUNTEER for such positions as: Ushers, Money Counters, Catering Assistance, Pre-Baptism Instructors, Marriage rehearsal guides, and any other way that will help the parish community to be strong! We need more Volunteers to assist with table setting for catered events. Tables are set either the day before or the day of the event. We provide refreshments and light lunch to all of our volunteers. 5 May Announcements for Children of Mary and Sodality Sunday, May 7 - Capes and Veils at 11:00 am Divine Liturgy - light lunch to follow, Children of Mary and Sodality will sing hymns at intermission for the Sadochok Concert. Sunday, May 14 - Mother's Day - the Children of Mary, their mothers and the Sodality will be handing out flowers before both the 9:00 am and 11:00 am Divine liturgies. The free-will offering is our only big fundraiser. Please, when invited, sign up. We need to make a statement about our faith and about true morals. The Gospel message is one of life and love, and we as Christians are called to proclaim it to the world through our word and witness. You are invited to answer that call by joining Archbishop Smith, his brother bishops, and all pro-life advocates at the annual Alberta March for Life on Thursday, May 11. We invite you to pray with us at the Mass for Life at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Basilica. Following the celebration of the Eucharist, we will gather at 12 noon at Sir Winston Churchill Square, and walk together to the Alberta Legislature and back. Father s Day is an important time to celebrate the role of fatherhood within the Christian family and is an ideal day for husband/father to celebrate and honour his marriage vows together with his wife/mother. This is a good opportunity for every married couple to recall and affirm their wedding vows together with a special blessing following every Sunday Divine liturgy. All families are invited to attend a Divine Liturgy on Fathers Day, June 18 to participate in this celebration.

9 Ukrainian Catholic Women s League of Canada League Day (Tag Day) - May 28, 2017 For more than 45 years UCWLC branches across Canada have observed League Day each year on the last Sunday in the month of May. A common bond, with the same objectives and intentions not only unites the UCWLC members in Edmonton, but also the UCWLC across Canada. For 73 years our organization has been one of the strong unifying force of our identity as the Ukrainian Catholic Church while opening itself to the mission of sharing our faith with others. On this day we honour and venerate Mary, the Holy Mother of God, the Patroness of our organization. Together we celebrate the Divine Liturgy, receive the Holy Eucharist and remember our deceased members. It is also a day to renew our efforts, by reviewing our endeavours and achievements of the past year and plan new activities and goals for the coming year. On Sunday, May 28, UCWLC members will be acknowledging this day by tagging parishioners as they enter the Church for both the 9 am and 11 am Divine Liturgies. Your kind donations would be greatly appreciated, as they will assist us in continuing programs that support Christian ideals and the maintenance and development of an economic and social atmosphere favourable to the Christian Family. UCWLC members are encouraged to come to the 9:00 am Divine Liturgy, to take part in the candle procession, and sit in community in the front pews. 10 May 13, 2017 marks the 100 th anniversary of the apparitions of the Mother of God to the three shepherd children at Fatima. To celebrate the occasion, you are invited to St. Nicholas Church (9507 Austin O Brien Rd.) on that day, for an Akafist to the Mother of God at 6:30 pm., followed by a showing of a documentary about the apparitions. Childcare and a children s film about the story of Fatima will be made available if we are informed ahead of time that children will be attending. A Woman and a Fork There was a young woman who had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and had been given three months to live. So, as she was getting her things "in order," she contacted her pastor and had him come to her house to discuss certain aspects of her final wishes. She told him which songs she wanted sung at the service, what scriptures she would like read, and what outfit she wanted to be buried in. Everything was in order and the pastor was preparing to leave when the young woman suddenly remembered something very important to her. "There is one more thing," she said excitedly. "What is that?" came the pastor's reply. "This is very important," the young woman continued. "I want to be buried with a fork in my right hand." The pastor stood looking at the young woman, not knowing quite what to say. "That surprises you, does it not?" the young woman asked. "Well, to be honest, I am puzzled by the request," said the pastor.

11 The young woman explained. "My grandmother once told me this story, and from then on, I have always done so. I have also, always tried to pass along its message to those I love and those who are in need of encouragement." In all my years of attending church socials and potluck dinners, I always remember that when the dishes of the main course were being cleared, someone would inevitably lean over and say, 'Keep your fork! It was my favorite part because I knew that something better was coming... like velvety chocolate cake or deep-dish apple pie. Something wonderful, and with substance!' So, I just want people to see me there in that casket with a fork in my hand and I want them to wonder, "What is with the fork?" Then I want you to tell them: "Keep your fork... the best is yet to come." The pastor's eyes welled up with tears of joy as he hugged the young woman good-bye. He knew this would be one of the last times he would see her before her death. But he also knew that the young woman had a better grasp of heaven than he did. She had a better grasp of what heaven would be like than many people twice her age, with twice as much experience and knowledge. She KNEW that something better was coming. At the funeral people were walking by the young woman's casket and they saw the pretty dress she was wearing and the fork placed in her right hand. Over and over, the pastor heard the question; "What is with the fork?" And over and over he smiled. During his message, the pastor told the people of the conversation he had with the young woman shortly before she died. He also told them about the fork and about what it symbolized to her. The pastor told the people how he could not stop thinking about the fork and told them that they probably would not be able to stop thinking about it either. He was right. So the next time you reach down for your fork, let it remind you ever so gently, that the best is yet to come.
