SPIRITUAL ACTS If you desire to make the Great Fast even more real, add to your prayers and fasting spiritual acts of Mercy. Send a card or letter to someone you know is having a difficult time in life OR visit them. Your support could make all the difference to them. They should not know, by the way, that you are doing this as a Lenten spiritual act. Just share with them the joy of life and the love of God. May someone s life be better because you care! A PRAYER A DAY FOR THE GREAT FAST The prayers are based, in part, on the Matins Services of the Great Fast SUNDAY, MARCH 26: O holy father John Climacus, today the Church commemorates your life and commitment to follow Jesus. Truly you have carried on your lips the praises of the Lord and, with great wisdom, have studied the words of Holy Scripture so that you might teach us how to become people who strive to imitate Christ. You have, because of your efforts, gained the riches of grace and become blessed. By your Sacred Ladder, father John, you have shown me how to take up the cross life has presented to me and, like Jesus, to carry it without complaint. You have shown me how to imitate Christ and to follow in His steps. I humbly ask you, father John, to ask God, on my behalf, to grant me the courage to climb your Ladder for greater union with You. Amen! Monday, March 27 - O Christ our true God, as I look upon Your Holy Cross, I am reminded of the great love you have for me and all humankind. As I behold Your Cross I know that You know well the struggles humans face in life. You faced these same struggles Yourself, and many more, so that I might understand how to deal with the struggles that life brings to me. Help me to see and accept life s struggles as loving opportunities to grow in my hope and trust in You. Help me to deal with the struggles of my life as You did. Help me to carry my cross behind You. As I request Your help, O God, I offer my praise to You, Who I know to be Father, Son and Holy Spirit, not only now but forever and ever. Amen.
Tuesday, March 28 - O my most living Lord, I beg Your help in carrying the crosses that are a part of my life. Help me to never become bitter at the challenges that life gives me but to deal with these challenges with the same type of nobility and courage You had in your crucifixion and death. Help me not to complain about life s challenges but, like You, to be silent and prayerful, only asking our Father for His divine help. As I carry the crosses which come to my life, help me to realize that they are designed with love to help me spiritually grow. As I request Your help, O God, I offer my praise to You, Who I know to be Father, Son and Holy Spirit, not only now but forever and ever. Amen. Wednesday, March 29 - O loving Lord, as I think again about Your crucifixion and death, help me to realize that it is necessary for me to voluntarily embrace life s challenges so that I may truly come to a deeper understanding of life s purpose. Help me to see in Your cross, the way to my own salvation, knowing that it is the way that I live my life and accept the crosses of life that will lead me to a deeper union with You. Help me to realize that the crosses of my life, if willingly accepted with nobility and courage, can only lead to greater union with You. As I request Your help, O God, I offer my praise to You, Who I know to be Father, Son and Holy Spirit, not only now but forever and ever. Amen. Thursday, March 30 - O Jesus Christ, I truly believe and profess that You are truly God incarnate Who came into our world for the sake of revealing to us how we must live in order to come into deeper union with You. I know and believe that this is the true meaning of life. For salvation is to know You, my Triune God, as the source of my life, as revealed through the Person of Jesus. I beg You to help me grow more convinced of this truth and to do all in my power to completely embrace the Jesus Way of Living. He is the Person I desire to imitate. As I request Your help, O God, I offer my praise to You, Who I know to be Father, Son and Holy Spirit, not only now but forever and ever. Amen.
Friday, March 31 - Heavenly Father, when I look upon the Cross of Your Beloved Son, I realize the great love You have for me and all humankind. Help me to dare to believe that You love us so much that You became incarnate in the Person of Your Son so that You might be able to show us in a very concrete way how to deal with the physical and psychological suffering that is just a part of life. Your Son s courageous acceptance of His suffering inspires me to have the courage to face the sufferings that come into my life. The only words that I can offer to You is thank you. Help me carry my cross. As I request Your help, O God, I offer my praise to You, Who I know to be Father, Son and Holy Spirit, not only now but forever and ever. Amen. Saturday, April 1 - Lord Jesus Christ, I truly believe that You voluntarily embraced the suffering of Your crucifixion to reveal to me how to respond to the challenges of life. Your way of living leads to a deeper understanding of the meaning of life. Help me to imitate You as I deal with the challenges of my life. I know that if I imitate the way You lived that I will grow to be more like You, my redeemer and my God. Help me to have the courage, as You did, to embrace the crosses that are given to me in life. As I request Your help, O God, I offer my praise to You, Who I know to be Father, Son and Holy Spirit, not only now but forever and ever. Amen. Sunday, April 2 - Almighty and everlasting God, I know that the Church called me, this past week, to reflect upon the Holy Cross of Jesus, the Christ. I am deeply thankful for the insights You have given me about the meaning of the Cross. I ask You to help me imitate Jesus in the way that I deal with the crosses that life presents to me. I know that if I can deal with life s sufferings as He did that I will grow in my likeness of You. Help me to truly desire, since I have been created in Your image, to work with all of my strength to become a person in the likeness of Jesus, Who is Your image. Help me to imitate Him. As I request Your help, O God, I offer my praise to You, Who I know to be Father, Son and Holy Spirit, not only now but forever and ever. Amen.

A man went to a barbershop to have his hair cut and his beard trimmed. As the barber began to work, they began to have a good conversation. They talked about many things and various subjects. When they eventually touched on the subject of God, the barber said: "I do not believe that God exists." "Why do you say that?" asked the customer. "Well, you just have to go out in the street to realize that God does not exist. Tell me, if God exists, would there be so many sick people? Would there be abandoned children? If God existed, there would be neither suffering nor pain. I can not imagine a loving God who would allow all of these things." The customer thought for a moment, but did not respond because he did not want to start an argument. The barber finished his job and the customer left the shop. Just after he left the barbershop, he saw a man in the street with long, stringy, dirty hair and an untrimmed beard. He looked dirty and unkempt. The customer turned back and entered the barber shop again and he said to the barber: "You know what? Barbers do not exist." "How can you say that?" asked the surprised barber. "I am here, and I am a barber. And I just worked on you!" "No!" the customer exclaimed. "Barbers do not exist because if they did, there would be no people with dirty long hair and untrimmed beards, like that man outside." "Ah, but barbers DO exist! " answered the barber. "What happens, is, people do not come to me." "Exactly!" affirmed the customer. "That is the point! God, too, DOES exist! What happens, is, people DO NOT go to Him and do not look for Him. That is why there is so much pain and suffering in the world."
A Smile A smile costs nothing, but gives much. It enriches those who receive, without making poorer those who give. It takes but a moment, but the memory of it sometimes lasts forever. None is so rich or mighty that he can get along without it, and none is so poor, but that he can be made rich by it. A Smile creates happiness in the home, fosters good will in business, and is the countersign of friendship. It brings rest to the weary, cheer to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad, and it is nature's best antidote for trouble. Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen, for it is something that is of no value to anyone, until it is given away. Some people are too tired to give you a smile; give them one of yours, as none needs a smile so much as he who has no more to give. Author Unknown
A GLASS OF MILK One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry. He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, How much do I owe you? You do not owe me anything, she replied. "Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness." He said, "Then I thank you from my heart." As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit. Many years later that same young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled! They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room. Dressed in his doctor's gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to her case. After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She read these words. "Paid in full with one glass of milk" Signed, Dr. Howard Kelly. Tears of joy flooded her eyes as her happy heart prayed: "Thank You, God, that Your love has spread broad through human hearts and hands." The good deed you do today may benefit you or someone you love at the least expected time. If you never see the deed again at least you will have made the world a better place - And, after all, is not this what life is all about?
