Heal me of whatever might separate me from You. Heal my spirit, heal my body, heal my soul. Lay Your hands gently upon me and heal me through Your love for me. AMEN! We collect non-perishable food items for the Edmonton Food Bank. You may make your contribution any time you come to church. 1 dozen empty egg containers are needed. One evening, a grandson was talking to his grandmother about current events. The grandson asked his grandmother what she thought about the shootings at schools, the computer age, and just things in general. The grandma replied, "Well, let me think a minute, I was born before television, penicillin, polio shots, frozen foods, Xerox, contact lenses, Frisbees and the pill. There were no credit cards, laser beams or ball-point pens. Man had not invented pantyhose, air conditioners, dishwashers, clothes dryers, and the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and man had yet to walk on the moon. Your grandfather and I got married first and then lived together. Every family had a father and a mother. Until I was 25, I called every man older than I, "Sir" and after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, "Sir". We were before gay-rights, computer-dating, dual careers, day-care centers, and group therapy. Our lives were governed

6 by the Ten Commandments, good judgment, and common sense. We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions. Serving your country was a privilege; living in this country was a bigger privilege. We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent. Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins. Draft dodgers were people who closed their front doors when the evening breeze started. Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends - not purchasing condominiums. We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CDs, electric typewriters, yogurt, or guys wearing earrings. We listened to the big bands, Jack Benny, and the President's speeches on our radios. And I do not ever remember any kid blowing his brains out listening to Tommy Dorsey. If you saw anything with 'Made in Japan ' on it, it was junk. The term 'making out' referred to how you did on your school exam. Pizza Hut, McDonald's, and instant coffee were unheard of. We had 5 & 10-cent stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents. Ice-cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were all a nickel. And if you did not want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail one letter and two postcards. You could buy a new Chevy Coupe for $600, but who could afford one? Too bad because, gas was 11 cents a gallon. In my day, "grass" was mowed, "coke" was a cold drink, "pot" was something your mother cooked in, and "rock music" was your grandmother's lullaby. "Aids" were helpers in the Principal's office, "chip" meant a piece of wood, "hardware" was found in a hardware store and "software" was not even a word. And we were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby. No wonder people call us "old and confused" and say there is a generation gap. And how old do you think grandma is? Read on to see - pretty scary if you think about it and pretty sad at the same time. This is something to think about. How time has changed... Grandma is 72 (born 1946) How could so much go wrong in such a short time?

7 The Date With Mom After 21 years of marriage, I discovered that a new way of keeping alive the spark of love. A little while ago I had to go out with another woman. It was really my wife s idea. I know that you love her, she said one day, taking me by surprise. But I love YOU, I protested. I know, but you also love her. The other woman that my wife wanted me to visit was my mother, who has been a widow for 19 years, but the demands of my work and my three children had made it only possible to visit her occasionally. That night I called to invite her to go out for dinner and a movie. What is wrong, are you well? she asked. My mother is the type of woman who suspects that a late night call or a surprise invitation is a sign of bad news. I though that it would be nice to spend some time with you, I responded. Just the two of us. She thought about it for a moment, and then said, I would like that very much. That Friday after work, as I drove over to pick her up I was a bit nervous. When I arrived at her house, I noticed that she, too, seemed to be nervous about our date. She waited in the door with her coat on. She had curled her hair and was wearing the dress that she had worn to celebrate her last wedding anniversary. She smiled from a face that was as radiant as an angel s. I told my friends that I was going to go out with my son, and they were impressed, she said, as she got into the car. They can not wait to hear about our meeting. We went to a restaurant that, although not elegant, was very nice and cosy. My mother took my arm as if she were the First Lady. After we sat down, I had to read the menu. Her eyes could only read large print. Halfway through the entrees, I lifted my eyes and saw Mom sitting there staring at me. A nostalgic smile was on her lips. It was I who used to have to read the menu when you were small, she said. Then it is time that you relax and let me return the favour, I responded. During the dinner we had an agreeable conversation nothing extraordinary but catching up on recent events of each other s life. We talked so much that we missed the movie.

8 As we arrived at her house later, she said, I will go out with you again, but only if you let me invite you. I agreed. How was your date? asked my wife when I got home. Very nice. Much more so than I could have imagined, I answered. A few days later my mother died of a massive heart attack. It happened so suddenly that I did not have a chance to do anything for her. Some time later I received an envelope with a copy of a restaurant receipt from the same place mother and I had dined. An attached note said: I paid this bill in advance. I was almost sure that I could not be there but, nevertheless, I paid for two plates, one for you and the other for your wife. You will never know what that night meant for me. I love you. At that moment I understood the importance of saying, in time: I LOVE YOU and to give our loved ones the time that they deserve. Nothing in life is more important than your family. Give them the time they deserve, because these things cannot be put off till some other time. Attitude makes all the difference in our lives. There once was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the mirror, and noticed she had only three hairs on her head. "Well," she said, "I think I will braid my hair today?" So she did and she had a wonderful day. The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and saw that she had only two hairs on her head. "H-M-M," she said, "I think I will part my hair down the middle today?" So she did and she had a grand day. The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that she had only one hair on her head. "Well," she said, "today I am going to wear my hair in a pony tail." So she did and she had a fun, fun day. The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that there was not a single hair on her head. "YEA!" she exclaimed, "I do not have to fix my hair today!" Attitude is everything. Have a Good Day! Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle. Live simply, love generously, care deeply, speak kindly... leave the rest to God.
