The Knights of Columbus, invite all married couples to renewal of their marriage vows following the Liturgy next Sunday, June 17. Controlling The Tongue It was a particularly tough football game and nerves were on edge. The home team had been the victim of three or four close calls, and they were now trailing the visitors by a touchdown and a field goal. When the official called yet another close one in the visitors' favour, the home quarterback blew his top. "How many times can you do this to us in a single game?" he screamed. "You were wrong on the out-of-bounds call, you were wrong on that last holding call, and you failed to say anything about a late hit in the first quarter." The official just stared. The quarterback seethed, but he tried to suppress language that might get him tossed out of the game. "What it comes down to," he bellowed, "is that YOU STINK!" The official stared a few more seconds. Then he bent down, picked up the ball, paced off 15 yards, and put the ball down. He turned to face the steaming quarterback. "And how do I smell from here?" he asked. There are so many times when it is hard to "bite the tongue" and say nothing. The urge to say "something" seems so overpowering that the words sometimes erupt before we have a chance to think them through. Unfortunately, those

7 words have consequences. The minor offenses result in 15- yard penalties. The more serious offenses result in years of regret and heartache or perhaps broken relationships that take years to rebuild. No wonder James had such strong words of praise concerning the person who is always able to control what he says. "He who has knowledge spares his words and a man of understanding is of a calm spirit. Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; when he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive." (James 3:2) (Prov. 17:27-28) May your words today be few, calm, and carefully thought out. Author Unknown Do You Smell That? As the doctor walked into the small hospital room of Diana Blessing, she was still groggy from surgery. Her husband, David, held her hand as they braced themselves for the latest news. That afternoon of March 10, 1991, complications had forced Diana, only 24-weeks pregnant, to undergo an emergency Cesarean to deliver the couple's new daughter, Dana Lu Blessing. At 12 inches long and weighing only one pound nine ounces, they already knew she was perilously premature. Still, the doctor's soft words dropped like bombs. "I do not think she is going to make it," he said, as kindly as he could. "There is only a 10-percent chance she will live through the night, and even then, if by some slim chance she does make it, her future could be a very cruel one" Numb with disbelief, David and Diana listened as the doctor described the devastating problems Dana would likely face if she survived. She would never walk, she would never talk, she would probably be blind, and she would certainly be prone to other catastrophic conditions from cerebral palsy to complete mental retardation, and on and on. "No! No!" was all Diana could say. She and David, with their 5-year-old son Dustin, had long dreamed of the day they would have a daughter to become a family of four. Now, within a matter of hours, that dream was slipping away. But, as those first days passed, a new agony set in for David and Diana. Because Dana's underdeveloped nervous system was essentially 'raw', the lightest kiss or caress only intensified her discomfort, so they could not even cradle their tiny baby

8 girl against their chests to offer the strength of their love. All they could do, as Dana struggled alone beneath the ultraviolet light in the tangle of tubes and wires, was to pray that God would stay close to their precious little girl. There was never a moment when Dana suddenly grew stronger. But as the weeks went by, she did slowly gain an ounce of weight here and an ounce of strength there. At last, when Dana turned two months old, her parents were able to hold her in their arms for the very first time. And two months later, though doctors continued to gently but grimly warn that her chances of surviving, much less living any kind of normal life, were next to zero, Dana went home from the hospital, just as her mother had predicted. Five years later, when Dana was a petite but feisty young girl with glittering gray eyes and an unquenchable zest for life. She showed no signs whatsoever of any mental or physical impairment. Simply, she was everything a little girl can be and more. But that happy ending is far from the end of her story. One blistering afternoon in the summer of 1996 near her home in Irving, Texas, Dana was sitting in her mother's lap in the bleachers of a local ballpark where her brother Dustin's baseball team was practicing. As always, Dana was chattering nonstop with her mother and several other adults sitting nearby when she suddenly fell silent. Hugging her arms across her chest, little Dana asked, "Do you smell that?" Smelling the air and detecting the approach of a thunderstorm, Diana replied, "Yes, it smells like rain." Dana closed her eyes and again asked, "Do you smell that?" Once again, her mother replied, "Yes, I think we are about to get wet. It smells like rain." Still caught in the moment, Dana shook her head, patted her thin shoulders with her small hands and loudly announced, "No, it smells like Him. It smells like God when you lay your head on His chest." Tears blurred Diana's eyes as Dana happily hopped down to play with the other children. Before the rains came, her daughter's words confirmed what Diana and all the members of the extended Blessing family had known, at least in their hearts, all along. During those long days and nights of her first two months of her life, when her nerves were too sensitive for them to touch her, God was holding Dana on His chest and it is His loving scent that she remembers so well.

Peter and Paul Vidpust and participate in the Divine Liturgy followed by a picnic in the park as the year-end wrap-up celebration. Sunday, June 24, 2:30 PM - MOLEBEN in Church. A Father s First Duty A father s first duty is to protect his children. That goes for not only earthly Dads, but for our Heavenly father as well. His embrace encompasses even those furthest from him. This is why the words we hear most often in Scripture are, Do not be afraid. Many wonder why a loving God of mercy puts up with evil, why bad things happen to good people while the sinful often seem to prevail. The world is what it is because God has created us fully free. A Carmelite writer describes God s mercy this way: It is like a declaration of love from God to humanity, to each one of us; it is a pledge of fidelity that is relayed from hand to hand, from heart to heart, and finally comes down to us. We, too, have to pay attention to these words. After all, Jesus was not one to talk for the sake of hearing himself. Through the ages, God s message to Dads remains: Keep the mandate of the LORD, your God, following his ways and observing his statutes, commands, ordinances and decrees as they are written in the law of Moses, that you may succeed in whatever you do, wherever you turn. (1 Kings 2:2-3) Our prayer today: Heavenly Father, your mercy flows from age to age like a river through time. Bless our earthly fathers as we celebrate them on this, their day.

11 Happy Father s Day - A Father s Day Prayer! We ask Almighty God to bless all the fathers and men of our Parish Family on this Father s Day. Grant them the strength to unconditionally love and forgive others and the courage to honestly deal with life s challenges. Make them icons of steadfastness in Your service, showing their children how to love others as You love them. We beg You, O Heavenly Father, to shower Your Blessings upon the living fathers and men of our Parish. Bless them with happiness, health and length of days. We also ask You grant blessed repose to our deceased fathers and place them in a place where there is no pain, sorrow or mourning. As we ask Your blessings upon the men of our Parish, we also ask You, O Heavenly Father, to help all of us to become persons who are truly sensitive to the needs of others. We know that You have called us to be like Your Son, Jesus Christ. Therefore help us to be persons who give life to others by the way we respect and treat them. Amen! Eternal Memory! Вічная пам ять! Many Years! Mногая Ліьа! Celebrating our Catholic Marriages and Families Father s Day is an important time to celebrate and promote the role of fatherhood within the Christian family. Fathers, by their word and example, pass on the faith and reflect the image of God the Father within their homes.

12 Christian marriages reflect the relationship between Christ and the Church and have the Holy Family as their primary model. As devoted Catholics, we the Parishioners of St. Basil s Ukrainian Catholic Church, and the members of the Knights of Columbus desire to nourish, support and strengthen Catholic family life through parish-based programs and charitable works. We invite each couple present to affirm their wedding vows. We hope that by doing so both of you will again experience the grace received on your wedding day, when you gave witness to the union of Christ and the Church. We pray that your marriage continues to be strengthened through the example of the Holy Family and the love that comes from Christ. Remember: you promised to help each other get to heaven! AFFIRMATION OF WEDDING VOWS Following the Divine Liturgy all couples are invited to affirm their wedding vows in a simple and solemn ceremony. You are invited to stand together in your pew. Priest: Dear brothers and sisters, on your wedding day you joined your lives in an unbreakable bond through the Mystery of Matrimony. I invite you now to join your right hands as we pray together for God s continued grace and blessing upon your marriage. Prayer to the Holy Family Priest: Jesus, Mary and Joseph, in you we contemplate the splendor of true love; to you we turn with trust. Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that our families too may be places of communion and prayer, authentic schools of the Gospel and small domestic churches. Holy Family of Nazareth, may families never again experience violence, rejection and division; may all who have been hurt or scandalized find ready comfort and healing. Holy Family of Nazareth, make us once more mindful of the sacredness and inviolability of the family, and its beauty in God s plan. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, Graciously hear our prayer.

13 Response: Amen. Priest: Lord God and Creator, we bless and praise your name. In the beginning you made man and woman, so that they might enter a communion of life and love. You likewise blessed the union of these married couples, so that they might reflect the union of Christ with his Church. Look with kindness on them today. Amid the joys and struggles of their life you have preserved the union between them. Renew their marriage covenant. Increase your love in them and strengthen their bond of peace, so that surrounded by their children they may always rejoice in the gift of your blessing. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Response: Amen. BLESSING OF MARRIED COUPLES Priest: Husbands and wives, please bow your heads for the blessing: Priest: May God our eternal Father keep you of one heart and mind and in love for one another that the peace of Christ may dwell in you and abide always in your home. Response: Amen. Priest: May you be blessed in your children, have solace in your friends and enjoy true peace with everyone. Response: Amen. Priest: May you be witnesses in the world to God s charity, so that the afflicted and needy who have known your kindness may one day receive you thankfully into the eternal dwelling of God. Response: Amen. Priest: And may almighty God bless you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Response: Amen.

Knights of Columbus are collecting for the Canadian Wheelchair Foundation Fundraiser, Scrap Metal at Pancake Breakfast July 15, See notice above How you can help parents struggling with young children during the Divine Liturgy One recent Sunday, my 4-year-old discovered an alreadybeen-chewed piece of gum underneath the pew just as our pastor stood to deliver his homily. Before Edward popped the wad into his mouth, I leaned over and hissed, Do not eat that. He glared at me, and I asked Mary, my 11-year-old, to throw the gum in the trash. Then, I turned my scattered attention back to father s homily. After a minute or two, my 13-year-old daughter tapped me on the shoulder to let me know Edward had escaped from the pew, hot on the trail of Mary and the A.B.C. gum. I slipped from my seat to find him. One man sitting a few rows behind me, having witnessed the entire scene, whispered, Go get him, mom! Another parishioner pointed over his shoulder and said, He went that way. There is no way to anticipate the rabble-rousing behaviour kids produce during a 60-minute Sunday Divine Liturgy. I endured the long walk of shame as several more onlookers informed me of my little escapee s whereabouts. When I finally spotted him, Edward was standing in front of his sister pleading his case about the gum and his unreasonable mother. I overheard him say, I am not sitting in the pew with her.

15 If someone had warned me before marriage about the difficulties I would face in bringing my small children to the Divine Liturgy, I am not sure I would have believed them. For a long time, most of my church experience included silencing squabbles between warring siblings and discouraging at least one child from scaling the kneelers while I half listened to the readings. My husband and I struggled for years to manage our posse of small people until one random Sunday something happened that revolutionized the years of theatrical religious drama we had endured. One morning at the 10 a.m. Divine Liturgy at our new parish, some long time friends, Janet and Danny Hoover, professional parents of a large brood of children, sought us out and sat down in the pew with us and our five children, ages 8 and under. The stress of managing our children was gone as was the worry we were annoying and distracting other parishioners. I wanted to lean over and tell Janet and Danny to get up and run. I wanted to inform them that sitting with our kids was like sharing a pew with a traveling circus, but before I had a chance to plead my case, Janet grabbed a toddler, Danny grabbed another toddler and a few of Janet s older kids sat between my other little ones. For the entire 60 minutes, our children were quiet and entertained by the person with whom they sat. The next weekend, Janet met us in the parking lot and invited us to do the same thing. It was hard to accept help, but it was impossible to deny how efficacious it was to sit with the Hoover family. The stress of managing our children was gone as was the worry we were annoying and distracting other parishioners. Janet and Danny were not shocked by anything the kids did (they had seen it all by then), and they helped teach my children the appropriate responses to the prayers. When we moved out of state several months later, we were sad to leave the Hoovers, and the Divine Liturgy was never again as manageable as it was during those months when we had backup in the pew. What if we asked ourselves; How can I serve the people struggling in my pew? instead of sitting silently and judging them.

16 I was reminded of the help from our friends those many years ago last weekend when my husband and I filed into a pew with our six children, right behind a young mom and friend of mine, who just had her third baby under three. When her 2-year-old began to get antsy, we invited her into the pew with us. It was our turn now to help the other younger parents in the church who needed help surviving the Divine Liturgy. Catholic families want to feel wanted in church. Unfortunately, instead of receiving a warm welcome, many of us are met with criticism, judgment and a general intolerance of the behaviour of our little people. There is a general attitude that these families should come back to the Divine Liturgy when their children know how to sit quietly and behave. As someone active in parish ministry, I work with a devoted team of people dedicated to spreading the Gospel. We are constantly brainstorming ways to communicate God s love to those sitting in the pews and beyond. We strive to create programs and events that nourish the hearts and minds of our parishioners. If you are a young mom or dad, struggling with your kids at church: Take heart. You are not alone. But perhaps we ( the other families in the pew) should redirect our energies. What if we quit trying to develop the perfect pastoral program and instead tried to make those people we see every Sunday in the pews feel welcomed and loved? What if we embraced those families who show up at the back of the church, self-conscious and starving for the body of Christ? What if we asked ourselves; How can I serve the people struggling in my pew? instead of sitting silently and judging them. We do not need perfectly designed programs to smile at newcomers or to invite someone to sit with us. We just need an open heart and a willingness to serve.

17 So, if you are a young mom or dad, struggling with your kids at church and feeling embarrassed or discouraged: Take heart. You are not alone. And if you need help managing your brood, invite an older couple with older children to sit with you. The other couple have extra hands, open hearts with a willingness to teach your children to learn the responses and room for you to join them.
