We have been blessed in the past by the generosity of so many parishioners and I am hopeful this will continue into the future. -Father George Thoughts From the Pastor To Teach Who Christ Is Update A heartfelt thank you to all who have pledged to our campaign. Total pledges to date amount to $725,577. This surpassed the parish goal of $650,000 and the Archdiocesan goal for our parish of $505,000. Through May 31, 2016 we have received payments of $122,583. Remember that any amount collected up to $505,000 is split 40% to the Archdiocese and 60% to St. Catherine/St. Lucy Parish. The Parish portion amounts to $70, and is in our parish savings account. Keep in mind that all funds collected over the $505,000 remain 100% in the parish savings. We are currently obtaining bids for the church tuck-pointing/roofing project. Due to the magnitude of this project (approximately $300,000) we will be dividing the work into manageable portions because we cannot do the entire job without having all the funds in the bank to cover the work. The pledges are to be paid over a five-year period which means we can only do the work that we have the savings to pay for it. Another factor is that this type of work is weather related. Tuck-pointing cannot be done in cold temperatures so depending on the possibility of sub-dividing this project into smaller portions and not incurring additional costs to do that, this work may not start until Spring of But please know that we are moving forward with the bid process. We will keep you up to date on the progress of the collection of pledges and the progress in the bidding process and will let you know when any work is scheduled so you can see your pledge dollars at work. Thank you again and God Bless You. Patricia Pomykalski Business Manager Rev. George O. Omwando Pastor

5 Page 5 June 19, 2016 Our Living Word: For Reflection Take time each week to reflect upon the CURRENT Sunday s Scripture. We are fed by the Word so we can live out the Word. JUNE 19, TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMES I find it most difficult to carry my daily cross when... I find it most difficult to give my life for another when 1st & 2nd Readings for the Upcoming Sunday are offered. Their sole purpose is to help us all of us receive and hear the word of God. JUNE 26, TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMES First Reading: 1 Kings 19:16, Elijah lived about 800 years before Jesus, and was revered as the greatest prophet in Jewish history, even though he left no written records. In this passage, he is nearing the end of his life, and God instructs him to anoint a successor. Second Reading: Galatians 5:1, Some time after Pal had preached the Gospel in Galatia, other Christians came who insisted that to be a good Christian one also had to follow the Jewish law and be ritually circumcised. This caused great dissension in the Church there. In this passage, Paul reaffirms their freedom from the law, and pleads for greater harmony. Table Talk for families ( Families are what you define family to be! ) This talk is based upon the Gospel from Luke 9: What is the meaning of the cross in my (our) everyday journey? 2. How does the mystery of death and resurrection continue to exist in the world today? Praying for the Sick In Our Parish Winifred Ballew, Nellie Baker, Richard Bongeorno, Jr., Fr. John Carolan, Lillian Czaplicki, Anabelle and Dale Deaton, Andrea Edwards, Joseph Fitzer, Donna Kanapes, Maggie Kearns, Virginia Keenan, Paul Koko, Dolores Malkowski Ronald Norman, Scarlett Evans-Perez, Carlton Shanks, Gloria Vaughn, and Marguerite Welch. The name of your close relative will remain on this list for four weeks. After that, you will have to call us again to reinstate it into the list. If you wish to include a name of a sick member of your family here, please call Amanda at the rectory during office hours. Thank you. Communion & Anointing of the Sick Please call the Rectory at to let us know if you or a member of your family is in need of the sacrament of anointing of the sick or would like to have Holy Communion brought to your house or nursing home or both. Remember a Loved One The Holy Mass would be of greater profit if people had it offered in their lifetime, rather than having it celebrated for the relief of their souls after death. -Pope Benedict XV We have weekday Masses available in our 2016 Mass Book. Please come to the Rectory for Masses. Remember your loved ones or any other special occasion. And Let It Begin With Me Just war thinking has become in our time the great myth that we kill by. Eileen Egan 27 W. Washington Blvd. Oak Park, IL School News The school office will be open during the summer, Mondays through Thursdays, from 8am-1pm. Do not hesitate to call or come in if there is anything you need. Please use the back entrance. Enjoy your summer! Summer time, and the livin is easy... So goes the lyric to a beautiful tune from Porgy and Bess. Though not officially summer until the summer solstice (June 21st), these days allow us to slow down, perhaps take a look back on the first six months of 2016 and seriously consider the next six months. It s also a time many folks like to read more and share what they are reading or have read. IF you are one of these folks you re welcome to let me know what you consider of substance as well as enjoyable so that we can spread the word. The is: st.c.st.l.jim@gmail.com. Vocations The Lord called me before I was born. Do you pray to know your vocation which was given to you before you were born? Could it be as a priest, deacon, sister or brother? Call Father Francis Bitterman , or write: fbitterman@archchicago.org Pray For Our Deceased Lacresia Jones May she rest in peace! May the angels lead Lacresia into Paradise!

6 Page 6 June 19, 2016 Parishes Committed to PEACE Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Next weeken, the Archdiocese of Chicago will take up the Peter s Pence Collection, which provides Pope Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works around the world. The proceeds benefit our brothers and sisters on the margins of society, including victims of war, oppression, and disasters. Join our Holy Father as a witness of charity to those who are suffering. A YEAR OF MERCY One Word at a Time The first requirement to live mercifully is to notice those who need mercy, kindness, and forgiveness. If we are distracted or absorbed in ourselves, we will never notice. And we will never be merciful. The first step is to look. There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus. (Luke 16:19 20) More on Pope Francis s vision at: There are so many things in this world that we do not agree, but the latest events in Orlando, Florida specifically the mass killing of innocent people; while several of them remain wounded and hospitalized has brought the nation together. Clearly, the Orlando occurrence was motivated by the hatred we see everywhere in the streets of Chicago, in our neighborhood, in places of work but even in the least expected place like our community and the Church. The Catholic Catechism teaches us that: Human life is sacred because from its beginning it involves the creative action of God and it remains forever in a special relationship with the Creator, who is its sole end. God alone is the Lord of life from its beginning until its end: no one can under any circumstance claim for himself the right directly to destroy an innocent human being. For that case, it is absolutely wrong to take away the life of someone. In Chicago, we are used to see violence everywhere not even in our streets but the very place we call home. Violence here does not mean the use of weapons but it could extend to include discrimination, sexual harassment, and favoritism among other things. These events are likely to repeat again and again as we have seen but we can do something about it as a community. I am asking you to join us and the community of St. Martin de Porres every Wednesday night from 6-7PM at the corner of Laramie and Adams to raise a noisy prayer for peace in the Austin neighborhood, and the last Saturday of every month at 6:30PM in front of the St. Edmund s Church for their regular monthly vigil against gun violence. Even if you cannot attend these events, call you state senator, your church pastor, you community activists, your congressman or talk to your family or join a group that advocates against violence in your local church and voice your concern. Together, we can build a JUST community regardless of our own religious beliefs or political affiliations that we subscribe to. May God bless you once again at this difficult moment of our nation as we continually mourn the killing of innocents of people that happen every day in our Nation. Fr. George O. Omwando, Pastor St. Catherine of Siena St. Lucy Parish ECHO Chicago JUNE 24 TO 30 ECHO Chicago is a Theology of the Body Summer Camp where young adults unpack and process the themes of prayer, identity and the mission to love. 7 Page 7 June 19, 2016 Follow in the Footsteps of Christ The great fifty-day celebration of Easter has concluded, as have the feasts honoring the Holy Trinity and the Body and Blood of Christ. Last week we began a long stretch of Ordinary Time that will bring us to late November. Saint Paul tells us today that those who are baptized have clothed yourselves with Christ (Galatians 3:27). This scripture is echoed in the Church s baptism ritual when we sing, You have put on Christ, in him you have been baptized. This message is inspiring and sobering at the same time, for in today s Gospel, we get to the heart of what it means to be clothed in Christ. The Lord tells us, If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me (Luke 9:23). For the next twenty-two weeks we are called to take up the cross and, with Saint Luke as our guide, follow in the footsteps of Christ. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Every Tuesday at 9:30 am here at St. Catherine of Siena- St. Lucy s Rectory. We need your assistance with the many tasks needed to sell the warm fresh donuts. Please consider volunteering for just a couple hours on that Saturday morning to help us reach our goal. If you can help or have any questions please contact Jeanette Cannon at patnette@comcast.net, or call her at: or Pierre Priestley at p.priestley@att.net or S A B B A T I C A L OK, What is it? Originally one would say a sabbatical year which refers to a Mosaic law among the ancient Jews. According to the law, every seven years the land and vineyards were to remain fallow and debtors were released from their obligations (Exodus 23:10, Leviticus 25:2-7; Deuteronomy 15:1-11). The land and individuals were refreshed, renewed. Now we say sabbatical to refer to a period of time away for prayer, study, perhaps travel, and then a return to the regular duties of life. Oops! How about this for a church Bulletin blooper: For those of you have children and don t know it, we have a nursery downstairs. Give Central allows our parish to provide its parishioners a safe and convenient way to make regular, automatic electronic contributions and can also be used be used for special events and other collections.
