Last weekend we celebrated the Trinitarian nature of God, and this weekend we celebrate The Body and Blood of Christ. This weekend s celebration lifts up our belief that the bread and the wine blessed by God through our belief becomes the real presence of the Body and the Blood of our Lord. It doesn t make logical or empirical/scientific sense; it can t be proven in a laboratory. The miraculous change into the Body and the Blood of Christ is something we believe in, we give ourselves to, putting aside science and logic and allow the mystery of God into our lives. Our belief comes as an act of trust. We trust in Jesus words, This is my Body, and, This is the cup of my Blood. We trust that what Jesus says is true and that when we do this in memory of him, we are present to this miracle of bread and wine becoming the Body and Blood of our Lord. We believe it to be an actual miraculous change, not just a symbol of Jesus. That is a big difference in belief between our Catholic Church and other Christian Churches and denominations. While we believe the bread and wine to be the sacramental (divine realpresence) Body and Blood of Christ, others hold the bread and wine to be symbolic of the Body and Blood of Jesus. While symbols are wonderful and guide our lives, they merely point to greater realities. We celebrate the reality of the Divine Presence in the Eucharist. As this is the last article I ll be writing in this space for the bulletin, it is fitting that it is about the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist and in our lives. It is fitting because the presence of Christ in our lives is something I ve talked and written about constantly over these years. God has blessed me tremendously, allowing me to be with you these twelve years. It is humbling for me to think of the people who I have been blessed to live and work with: Fr. John, Bro. Kenney, Jim, Gail, Sr. Marion and the tremendous school faculty, Hyacinth, Dee, Mike, Sr. Bernie, Dolores, and Connie. While those a re the parish staff, there are countless parishioners who are the embodiment of St. Catherine-St. Lucy Parish in whose presence I am equally humbled. I thank the good Lord for these years, and I certainly thank you. Actually, words cannot express the depth of my gratitude for the love and faith you have shared with me, and I hope you know the depth of my love for you. We will see each other again as God brings us together. So until then, pray for me and I ll pray for you. May God s peace always rest within you. - Father Dan

ELAINE PODRAZA TO RETIRE Elaine Podraza is a long-time parishioner and teacher at St. Catherine-St. Lucy School. After 27 years as a committed and dedicated teacher, Mrs. Elaine Podraza is retiring. Needless to say, she will be missed very much. We know there is no better Kindergarten teacher than Mrs Podraza; her students could not be better prepared for first grade anywhere in the city. Elaine has worked tirelessly to educate young children by introducing them great authors and interesting literature. Scientific experiments have allowed students to explore the wonders of the universe. The classroom computers and Promethean board have exposed the Kindergarten students to our everchanging technological world. Elaine will be very hard to replace, but we will try our best. She has promised to come back and help out a little in the fall, but she will spend the summer traveling with her husband overseas! We thank her and wish her well, and ask that God Bless her in a very special way.

5 Page 5 June 10, 2012 WOMEN OF ST. CATHERINE ST. LUCY: SUMMER/FALL DISCUSSION & REFLECTION: MOTHERS, SISTERS, DAUGHTERS The women of St. Catherine St. Lucy Parish are invited to gather this summer and fall for reflection and conversation. Shelby Boblick will facilitate the discussion, and we ll use as a catalyst the 22 women portrayed in Mothers, Sisters, Daughters: Standing on Their Shoulders, a book by Edwina Gateley and Sandra Mattucci. Here are women upon whose shoulders all women stand, from every continent, time period, and walk of life. They include saints, mystics, and martyrs; reformers, writers, and environmentalists. These amazing women have all made the world a better place by pursuing their dreams and visions often against enormous odds. We ll discuss these women s lives and how they, in turn, call each of us to be the best of who we are. Shelby will supply the books each week. No need to prepare in advance. If you want your own, the book is available on amazon.com for about $14. It matters not at all if you miss a week or several weeks. You are most welcome to join us as and when your schedule permits. Drop-ins are encouraged! Bring your female friends from the area, visitors, or relatives. All are welcome: once, occasionally, or on a regular basis. To accommodate a variety of schedules, we ll offer duplicate sessions each Monday: one at 1 p.m. and another at 7:30 p.m. Please join us at whichever time suits you and your life. No need to come at the same time each Monday. You may attend during the afternoon one Monday and during the evening next time. Our first session will take place on Monday, June 25. If possible, please bring a photo of your mother that Monday. Watch the bulletin for more details. Questions or concerns? Call Shelby Boblick at CLUB WINNER June 10, 2012: $25: #160 James & Alice Marshall OUR LIVING WORD: FOR REFLECTION Take time each week to reflect upon the CURRENT Sunday s Scripture. We are fed by the Word so we can live out the Word SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLODD OF CHRIST JUNE 9-10, 2012 Like Christ, I give my body and blood for others whenever I... I have experienced passing over from death to new life when... PREPARING TO RECEIVE AND HEAR THE WORD OF GOD Each week introductions to the 1st and 2nd Readings for the UPCOMING Sunday are offered. Their sole purpose is to help all of us receive and hear the Word of God. ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JUNE 16-17, 2012 First Reading: Ezekiel 17: Ezekiel was a major Old Testament prophet who ministered to the Jewish people exiled in Babylon. He often used parables and dramatizations to convey his message. In this passage, Ezekiel uses the image of tress to talk about the restoration of Israel. Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:6-10 We continue this weekend to read from Paul s second letter to the Corinthians. In this section of the letter, Paul describes our life on earth as a pilgrimage home to heaven. STEWARDSHIP & SCRIPTURE: June 10, 2012 Holy Trinity Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them and they all drank from it. - Mark 14:23 Jesus, the perfect steward, gave thanks, just before He gave Himself to us completely for our salvation. He offered us the chance to drink from His cup. In Eucharist we meet Christ personally and, if we listen to Him, we will know what drinking from His cup means for each of us. Often it means our own sacrifice giving up some of our time, talent and treasure to do His work on earth.
6 VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL OPPORTUNITY FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY! QUESTION OF THE WEEK (Based on the Gospel of Mark 14:12-16, 22-26) This is my blood of the covenant... remember the stories of boys who become blood brothers? What are the most common concepts you associate with shedding of blood throughout history? Are most of your ideas connected to relationships, promise and commitments? How do you understand the covenant that Jesus shed his blood? What is the significance in it being His blood? Do the lives of the martyr inspire you in a similar manner? Do you believe these martyrs could also say, This is the blood of the covenant?... AND LET IT BEGIN WITH ME. Before he died, Rabbi Zusya of Hanipol said, In the world to come, they will not ask me, Why were you not Moses? They will ask me, Why were you not Zusya? [Tales of the Hasidim] BRING THE WHOLE FLOCK TO HOMETOWN NAZARETH: WHERE JESUS WAS A KID! The Tri-Village parishes are sponsoring a vacation bible school experience for the whole family---and it s FREE! The dates/time are: Monday, June 18 through Friday, June 22nd from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. We are using the facilities at St. Giles for this family-centered experience. Do you like to sing? Tell stories? Act? Your likes can be put to good use if you volunteer to help out with this event! This is also an opportunity for our teens because volunteers are needed to make this a success. Registration packets explaining Hometown Nazareth, including the various volunteer opportunities are available in the vestibule. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY... if a 1st grader asked you what does TRIDUUM mean? PEW REPORT & FAITH (in)formation! You may (or maybe not) have read or heard about a PEW report which, in so many words, indicated that Catholic Christians are on the lower end of knowing about their Faith. We might say compared to other Christian as well as other faith traditions that those surveyed didn t score very high. Well, here is an effort to help all of us cram for any further exams! The questions/answers aren t meant to make us experts but, rather, more informed reminded members of the Catholic Church. to be continued! Registration for Religious Education Children currently participating in our PREF (Parish Religious Education Family) are automatically enrolled for the sessions. Registration for new 1st through 8th graders is VERY SIMPLE! Registration information is available in the vestibule as well as in the rectory. Please remember that children prepare for two consecutive years before celebrating either 1st Eucharist or Reconciliation.. For more information please contact Jim at or st.c.st.l.jim@gmail.com. Thanks! LUCIENNE HOUSE: PHASE II The first phase of work in Lucienne House (the former convent) was a great success because of YOU! Now we enter into Phase II: restoring the chapel and completing the 1st floor foyer and office areas. Work in the chapel requires scraping, plastering, painting, and, if necessary, carpeting of the floor. Your generosity in Phase I was humbling. We take the bold step now and ask for your support in Phase II. Our estimate for all the work is $8900. This is a large sum, yes; yet we have anonymous donors who have already helped monetarily! AND for Phase II we are indeed blessed to have AN ANONY- MOUS DONOR WHO WILL MATCH ALL FUNDS RECEIVED! Thank you for anything you can do in this effort. Oh! Now there are envelopes available for your use in this effort. You ll find them in the Gathering Space!
