2 Page 2 May 27, 2018 Thoughts From our Pastor Rev. George O. Omwando Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Today we celebrate the Feast of God which is also known as the Blessed Trinity or The Most Holy Trinity. The Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of our Catholic faith which is challenging to fully grasp and even explain.. It is not easy to understand the mind of God or His inner working because He is infinitely greater than we are. The Bible teaches that the Father is God, that Jesus is God, and that the Holy Spirit is God; but at the same time, the Bible does not explicitly teach about the Trinity, i.e. God the Father (creator), the Son (redeemer) and the Holy Spirit (sanctifier), but in many chapters of the Scripture, this is implied. Although we can understand some basic facts about the relationship of the different Persons of the Trinity to one another, our human minds are limited to fully understand the Trinity. However, this does not mean the Trinity is not true or that it is not based on the teachings of the Bible. The Trinity is one God existing in three Persons based on mutual love or indwelling. For instance, God the Father who is the creator is not God the Son who is the redeemer or the Holy Spirit who is the sanctifier but one! Understanding this type of relationship within the three Persons in the Trinity is not in any way suggesting that there are three gods in competition with each other. Let us remember that the word Trinity does not appear in the Bible but was coined by the Fathers of the Church, and Tertullian was the first to use the term. The name Trinity was used as an attempt to describe the triune God three coexistent, co-eternal Persons who make up God. Of real importance is that the concept represented by the word Trinity does exist clearly in the Old Testament but it is implied in the Gospel stories. Today, for instance, we are told that Jesus commissioned His disciples to go all over the world to make disciples of all nations by baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit (the Triune God, i.e. God the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit). Our other readings today explain to us this amazing mystery: that our God is a communion of three divine persons in love the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. God created us and loves us as our Father. That s what Moses was talking about in our first reading. God is also the Son who came into our world to share His life with us by showing us who God truly is. Jesus was the revealer of God: If you see me, you have seen the one who sent me. Finally, God is the Holy Spirit also who gives us new life as children of God and causes the Trinity to dwell in our hearts as St. Paul tells us in our second reading today. Each member of the blessed Trinity is God. The Father is God (John: 6:27; Romans 1:7; 1 Peter 1:2). The Son is God (John:1:1,14; Romans 9:5; Colossians 2:9; Hebrews 1:8; 1 John 5:20). The Holy Spirit is God (Acts 5:3-4; 1 Corinthians 3:16) but they have different origins and missions. The Father is the Creator, Son is the Redeemer and the Holy Spirit is the Sanctifier united in one mission. May the Blessed Trinity, One God, remain in us always. Fr. George PARISH MISSION STATEMENT WE THE PARISHIONERS OF ST. CATHERINE OF SIENA-ST. LUCY PARISH, SEEK TO DEEPEN OUR RELATIONSHIPS WITH GOD AND TO CELEBRATE GOD S PRESENCE IN WORD AND SACRAMENT. 3 Page 3 May 27, 2018 The Responsibility of our Faith Today is a day simply to ponder the fact that in baptism we were claimed by God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The first reading from Deuteronomy prompts us to fix in our hearts the truth that God is the Lord of both heaven and earth and there is no other god. Saint Paul reminds us that, because we received the Spirit of adoption in baptism, we are now children of God. In the Gospel Jesus charges us with the responsibility to make other disciples. These realities make today s solemnity a day of praise, adoration, and responsibility. It is a fitting day to thank God for the absolutely free gift of faith that we were given in baptism. It is also a day to ask God for strength to take on the responsibility of sharing that faith with others Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. JUNE 3, 2018 THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST First Reading: Exodus 24:3-8 Today s passage from the book of Exodus describes the covenant between God and the Israelite people. A covenant is a solemn agreement made between two parties and was usually sealed in blood. In ancient times, blood was considered the source of life. To sprinkle two people with the same blood bonded them as closely as if they were blood relatives. Second Reading: Hebrews 9:11-15 On Yom Kippur, the high priest sacrificied a goat on the altar in the temple. Then he took some of the blood into the holiest place in the temple sanctuary where only he was allowed to go. There, he sprinkled that blood as a renewal of the covenant made at Mount Sinai, and prayed that God would forgive the sins they had committed during the previous year. This ritual is the backdrop for today s reading from the letter to the Hebrews.
