Omwando Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, It is my pleasure to welcome 16 or so women who are going to be residents in the Lucienne Ministry Center as of this month. This marks the completion of the PARISH TRANFORMATION projects that we began in These women were formerly housed in Austin (Chicago) and they are sponsored by the School Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND). I find the mission of Sister House very close to our parish mission statement that is rooted in the Gospel of Christ. Sister House is a faith-orientated community of women that: offers a temporary home to women seeking recovery from substance abuse, provides a secure environment of respect order and peace, offers opportunities for growth in self-esteem and spiritual maturity, and requires accountability and responsibility. What the SSND sisters are doing is part of the message of the Gospel. To learn more about Sister House, please visit their website: And in case you see these women around the parish, please introduce yourself to them and make them feel comfortable. I am very pleased also for the work that has been done in Lucienne Ministry Center and those who participated in the Parish Transformation process in various capacities that has made this project fulfilled. As you are aware by now, we are hosting a Thanksgiving multi-faith service on tonight Nov. 18th at 7:00 pm. We are expecting people from over 35 different faith traditions covering River Forest, Oak Park, and Austin. More than 350 people are likely to attend this event. I am requesting parishioners who will attend this event to please consider carpooling and if necessary park your cars in our Chicago lot. Our two choirs will be participating at this prayer service led by Gail and Julius. Finally, Brothers and Sisters in Christ, we are coming close to the end of the liturgical year and beginning another new liturgical year soon. Today, our first and second readings are very apocalyptic as they try to tell us what will happen at the end of the world. Prophet Daniel tells us that, at the end of the world (which no one knows) many of those who sleep in dust of the earth shall awake; some shall live forever, others shall be an everlasting horror and disgrace. In this passage, the prophet was talking about the resurrection of the dead, and used sleep as a euphemism for death. As followers of Christ, we have to believe in the resurrection of the dead because Christ who died, rose again as He said, promised us too that one day we shall rise with Him. Nobody for sure knows when -- what time of the year or month the world will come to end but we are called to live our Christian vocation daily. If we live our Christian vocation well, then even if the world comes to an end today, we should be found ready and nothing should make us afraid. Our work is to continue to pray for one another. Let us not be tired of praying, even though there are times when one gets tired or discouraged from praying. Let us be reminded that prayer is our spiritual gas that keeps us moving as we conduct our day-to-day business. We, should not be scared of the end of the times, or be scared of the events that are mentioned in the first reading and the Gospel. However, I must admit that the end times scenarios mentioned in our readings are rather frightening, like the sun being darkened, the moon not shedding its light; the stars falling from the sky, and the powers in the heavens being shaken. Should this happen, do know that our Lord Jesus will not fail us since He is our perfect refuge. Once again, a huge heartfelt thank you to all those who planned, organized, volunteered, and worked tirelessly in the justended Christmas Bazaar. Your dedication and kindness do not go unnoticed. This process assists adults, as well as children over the age of 7, in learning about the Catholic Faith. Through its witness, worship, service, and teaching our Faith Community offers the invitation and support necessary for initiation into the Catholic Church. 3 Page 3 November 18, 2018 Encouragement This Sunday s Gospel is our final selection from Mark for this liturgical year. It is taken from the end of Jesus teaching in Jerusalem immediately preceding the account of his arrest and passion. In it Jesus gives his disciples hope to sustain them through his passion and death and any persecution or suffering that they would encounter after his resurrection. The words from the book of Daniel also provided hope and encouragement to the people of Daniel s time. The encouragement in these scriptures is meant for us as well, for none of us will escape tribulation in our lives. Followers of Jesus will be able to endure suffering with joyful hope, knowing that Christ s love will lead us along the way of discipleship and give us eternal life with God. Copyright J. S. NOVEMBER 25, 2018 OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE First Reading: Daniel 7: The book of Daniel was written 150 years before Christ, when the Jews were experiencing fierce persecutions. The author wanted to encourage them by telling heroic stories about a person named Daniel who lived many centuries earlier. Today s reading describes Daniel s vision of heaven, and is written in symbolic language similar to the book of Revelation. The term Son of Man indicated a human being chosen by God for a special purpose. Christians have applied this vision to Jesus. Second Reading: Revelation 1:5-8 The Book of Revelation was not intended to predict actual people and events in later times. Rather, it was intended to be a source of hope for Christians who were suffering persecution near the end of the first century. Today s passage is from the very beginning of the book and is part of a greeting from God to the persecuted people. Bequests PLEASE consider remembering our parish in your will or trust. Father George Bible Study - Mondays 9:30 AM Our Bible Study group meets on Mondays ~ 9:30 11:00 AM in the Rectory. We use the New Collegeville Bible Commentary from Collegeville, Minnesota. We read the scriptures, weekly psalms, and the commentary. Then we discuss it. It is an enlightening experience and totally free. Communion & Anointing of the Sick Please call the Rectory at to let us know if you or a member of your family is in need of the sacrament of anointing of the sick or would like to have Holy Communion brought to your house or nursing home or both. Mondays and Wednesdays, through December, our girls in grades 5-8 will be participating in an acting class, using the works of Shakespeare. Parent-Teacher Conferences are set for this Tuesday, from 3:30-7:00pm. School will be closed from Wednesday through Friday for the Thanksgiving Holiday. If you are looking for a great sporting event, come see our girls and boys basketball teams. The games are on the weekends at St. John Vianney in Northlake. Registration is always open. If you have a child/children who you would like to register, contact the Rectory, leave your name and number and someone will call you. It is never too late. Advent Candles Advent Candles will be for sale next weekend of November after all masses. They are available for $5/ set of candles and $5 for a wreath frame. SCOUTING PLAIN and SIMPLE A wonderful Boy Scout Troop (ages 11 18) meets at Brooks Middle School at Washington and Kenilworth in Oak Park every Thursday night from 7:15 9:00 pm. You name it and they do it. Troop 28 is a uniformed unit. National registration is $36, which is paid out of a Troop annual membership fee of $100. We don t engage in any other fundraising or sales for the Troop or Council benefit. In the last 30 years, 26 Scouts have achieved the Eagle Rank from this Troop.
