2 Page 2 June 10, 2018 Thoughts From our Pastor Rev. George O. Omwando Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Did you know that as baptized Christians we are all called to be disciples of Christ who have been given a mission of bringing Christ to the world? That we are all called to evangelize this world by sharing the Good News of Christ. Many times, when we are called, we tend to complain that we are not ready to carry this mission. Who, then, is ready to respond to this call? When God calls, He gives us a grace that will help us accomplish the mission that He has called us to do. After every Mass, the priest says: Go forth, the Mass ended, and the people respond, Thanks to be God.. What does this simple phrase mean to you? This phrase means that as we have heard the readings of that day and shared in eating of Christ s Body and drinking his Blood, therefore we are ready and equipped to go out after Mass is ended to bring the message of Christ to the entire world. The world where we are bringing the Good News could be your husband, your sister, your wife, your children, or your colleague at work who rarely goes to Mass. We are supposed to evangelize and invite them to come to Church and see what we do here at our community. Always we should never forget this noble call of inviting others to join us at Mass. It is through the participation of Mass that we deepen our spiritual commitments and understanding so that we can then go out to evangelize others. We must strive to work hard as disciples and increase our parish membership and sustain the members we currently have. Imagine what will happen, if every parishioner within one year brings one Catholic to church? This will mean that our numbers will grow and our Father in heaven will be pleased with our efforts. Thanks so much to the parishioners who have come forward and told me that they have brought someone new to church! In today s readings we are told that after Adam and Eve committed sin, they heard God walking in the garden and they tried to hide from Him. In this episode, God demonstrated his graciousness by seeking them out. God certainly didn t have to do that. He could have let them stew for a while. He could have let them tremble behind their fig leaves every time they heard a noise in the bushes. But instead God sought them out, not because they deserved that in any way, but because it is His nature to be gracious. And He doesn t approach Adam and Eve in the way that we probably would have done. Instead of being angry and leveling accusations against them, God began by asking them a question. In fact, this is actually the first question we find God asking in the Bible. And when God asks a question, He isn t doing it to gain information. He is doing it to get man to think about his situation. When He asks, Where are you? He already knows where Adam is, but He uses that question and the other questions He asked to help Adam and Eve recognize that they had sinned and they were lost. This passage also reveals that we have the responsibility to choose wisely and that there are consequences when we fail to do that. When Adam and Eve made the choice to rebel against God s clear command here, they immediately suffered the consequences of their choice and those consequences would be with them for the rest of their lives. Let us also remember that no matter what we do, God loves us. Finally, I would like to thank those parishioners who were involved in the planning of the late Fr. John s Birthday/Ice Cream Social, for their hard work and commitment to our parish. We are also grateful for the people who took the time to share how Fr. John has impacted their lives. God bless you. Fr. George PARISH MISSION STATEMENT WE THE PARISHIONERS OF ST. CATHERINE OF SIENA-ST. We are focusing on helping young men/women who are being "emancipated" from foster/group home care to live on their own. We are partnering with an organization called UCAN. This organization (UCAN.com) works with the Illinois Department of Children & Family Services. Do you remember when you first moved out on your own? All the things you needed/wanted? Maybe you took towels or linens from your parent's home. These young people often don't have a family network to help. But you can help! Some ideas are: Sheets / blankets (single or full) Pillows Dishes Glassware Silverware Pots/Pans Microwave containers Bath Towels Dish towels Plastic storage containers Laundry baskets Garbage cans Mop/bucket Cleaning supplies Broom/dust pan Hot pads Small appliances (i.e. Toaster, coffee maker, microwave, alarm clock, fan, can opener) Other appropriate items you think of are also appreciated. I open myself to grow and change in ways I may never dream likely. I risk being spiritually transformed into a person whose life continually manifests goodness. (p. 7) This series are an introduction to Joyce Rupp who is well known for her work as a writer, spiritual midwife, international retreat leader, and conference speaker.
