2 Page 2 April 8, 2018 Thoughts From our Pastor Rev. George O. Omwando Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Today is the second Sunday of Easter, also known as Divine Mercy Sunday. This feast was instituted by Saint John Paul II in the year 2000 at the canonization ceremony St. Maria Faustina Kowalska. Pope John Paul II made the surprise announcement of this change in his homily at the canonization of St. Faustina on April 30, There, he declared: "It is important then that we accept the whole message that comes to us from the word of God on this Second Sunday of Easter, which from now on throughout the Church, will be called Divine Mercy Sunday. By the words "the whole message," Pope John Paul II was referring to the connection between the "Easter Mystery of the Redemption" in other words, the suffering, death, burial, resurrection, and Ascension of Christ, followed by the sending of the Holy Spirit and this Feast of Divine Mercy, the Octave Day of Easter, which fulfills the grace of atonement as lived through by Christ Jesus and offered to all who come to Him with trust. During his homily, John Paul also made clear that the Image of The Divine Mercy, St. Faustina saw, which is to be venerated on Divine Mercy Sunday, represents the Risen Christ bringing mercy to the world (see Diary 49, 88, 299, 341, 570, 742). Pope John Paul II said: "Jesus shows His hands and His side [to the Apostles]. He points, that is, to the wounds of the Passion, especially the wound in His Heart, the source from which flows the great wave of mercy poured out on humanity. Sister Faustina was a young, uneducated nun in a convent of the Congregation of Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in Krakow, Poland in Sr. Faustina came from a very poor family that struggled on their little farm during the years of World War I. She had only three years of very simple education, so hers were the humblest tasks in the convent, usually in the kitchen or garden. However, she received extraordinary revelations or messages from Our Lord Jesus. Jesus asked Sr. Faustina to record these experiences, which she compiled in notebooks. These notebooks are known today as the Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska and the words contained within are God's loving message of Divine Mercy. Today, my brothers and sisters in Christ, Saint Faustina remind us to trust in Jesus' endless mercy, and to live life mercifully toward others. We also turn to her in prayer and request her intercession to our merciful Savior on our behalf. More than ever, our world needs human mercy as the mercy amongst ourselves is lacking. This process assists adults, as well as children over the age of 7, in learning about the Catholic Faith. 3 Page 3 April 8, 2018 So That You May Believe It is not often that the author of one of the books of the Bible comes right out and tells us directly why he is writing what he is writing. In this Sunday s Gospel reading, taken from the conclusion of John s Gospel, the author tells us that he has chosen to record these events so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name (20:31). The letter of John echoes this idea by saying that [everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God (5:1) what we might refer to as being born again. Our reading from the Acts of the Apostles for this Second Sunday of Easter shows us exactly what it looks like when believers are born again through faith. Copyright J. S. APRIL 15, 2018 THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER First Reading: Acts 3:13-15, Chapter three of the Acts of the Apostles describes how Peter and John healed a lame man who sat begging each day at the gate of the temple. The people were astonished at this miracle. Peter used the opportunity to give a sermon encouraging the people to believe in Jesus. We hear a portion of that sermon now. Second Reading: 1 John 2:1-5 Each Sunday during this Easter Season, we are reading from the first letter of John. It was written for the community from which the fourth Gospel emerged. At the time, this community was seriously divided. Some members believed that as long as you had faith in Jesus, it did not matter what you did in daily life. Today s passage deals with that issue. Everyone enjoyed a peaceful, restful, Easter break. We are happy to be back together as a family. The students will celebrate an Easter liturgy on Wednesday, April 11. Aspire, the Catholic schools standardized testing, will be given to students in grades 3-8 during the week of April 16. Our school board is planning a Parent University on Saturday, April 21. A selection of seminars on parenting skills and helping your child succeed will be offered. Please contact the school if you would like to attend. Further information: Shem Center, What is Divine Mercy Sunday? Divine Mercy is God's love reaching down to meet the needs and overcome the miseries of His creatures. The Bible, the teachings of Saint Thomas Aquinas, and Pope John Paul II all assure us that this is so. In the 1930s, Jesus chose a humble Polish nun, St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, to receive private revelations concerning Divine Mercy that were recorded in her Diary. Jesus appeared to Saint Faustina in a vision, with his right hand raised in a blessing and his left touching his garment above his heart. Red and white rays emanate from his heart, symbolizing the blood and water that was poured out for our salvation and our sanctification. The Lord requested that Jesus, I trust in You be inscribed under his image. Bl. John Paul explains: This was precisely the time when those ideologies of evil, nazism and communism, were taking shape. Sister Faustina became the herald of the one message capable of off-setting the evil of those ideologies, that fact that God is mercy the truth of the merciful Christ.
