We have been blessed in the past by the generosity of so many parishioners and I am hopeful this will continue into the future. -Father George These coming months, September through October, we are going to be very busy as we start the series of events that culminate with our 125th anniversary Mass on October 19 at 10:30 AM. On that weekend, there will be ONLY ONE Mass. There will be no "anticipation Mass" at 5:00 PM on Saturday, October 18. Neither will there be an 8:30 AM Mass on that Sunday, October 19. Please keep in mind these changes. We want all of us to be together for this grand celebration at 10:30 Mass on October 19th. Much time is being spent to prepare for these events and I am truly grateful for those involved in the planning and execution of our anniversary. As part of the preparation for our anniversary, the following projects are now complete: painting, tiling and renovation of the "Canteen" in the basement of Maguire Hall. The parish school and other parish-related activities will use the "Canteen." Our very own parishioners, assisted by our own maintenance crew, did all of this work. We are truly grateful to have these men in our community who have donated their time to make sure the room looks beautiful. In addition, these men are involved in many projects in our parish and continue to be, as needs arise. Soon I will be publishing a detailed report card for what we have done in the past two years. A "pending project" is the replacement of the front doors of Maguire Hall. We are able to accomplish this due to a generous donation from a parishioner. Brothers and Sisters, on Monday we celebrate Labor Day. The Catholic Church has a well-documented tradition on labor and unions, rooted in "human rights." In 2007, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) in their document: Forming Consciences/or Faithful Citizenship," support the rights of workers to choose whether to organize, join a union, and bargain collectively and to exercise these rights without reprisal. Workers, owners, employers, and unions should work together to create decent jobs, build a more just economy and advance the common good. In the document Economic Justice for All, the USCCB wrote that no one might deny the right to organize without attacking human dignity itself. In this document, the bishops firmly oppose organized efforts, such as those regrettably seen in the USA, to break existing unions and prevent workers from organizing. Let us pray during this weekend for improved working conditions, fair wages, an end to gender discrimination in work places, and many other problems that face today's workers. God bless you all! Fr. George Omwando

3 Page 3 August 31, 2014 Doing God s Will The language of Jeremiah as he addresses his yearnings to God he says, You duped me, O LORD, and I let myself be duped (Jeremiah 20:7) indicates a close and personal relationship with God. It is one the prophet obviously cherishes despite the derision and reproach it brings him. In the Gospel, Jesus indicates a similar bond with his Father. In spite of the difficult challenges presented by following God s will, Jesus is not deterred. Giving up our own worldly cares and dreams, even as we accept pain and suffering, is more than a fair exchange for doing the will of God. The only way to do God s will is offer our whole selves to God. As St. Paul writes in the Letter to the Romans: Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind (Romans 12:2a). -Coyright J. S. Paluch Co. 5 Page 5 August 31, 2014 Our Living Word: For Reflection Take time each week to reflect upon the CURRENT Sunday s Scripture. We are fed by the Word so we can live out the Word. AUGUST 31, ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMES My life is being transformed by Jesus in the following ways... Letting go and denying myself in order to become a new person in Jesus is requiring me to... Each week introductions to the 1st and 2nd Readings for the Upcoming Sunday are offered. Their sole purpose is to help us all of us receive and hear the word of God. SEPTEMBER 7, RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMES First Reading: Ezekiel 33:7-9 Ezekiel was an Old Testament prophet who ministered to the Jewish people exiled in Babylon. In this passage, the speaker is God who uses the image of a watchman to describe a prophet s role. In those times, a watchman was someone who stood on a hill or in a tower to watch for invaders. Second Reading: Romans 13:8-10 In the concluding section of his letter to the Romans, Paul writes about the moral demands of Christian life. This letter was written some years before the Gospels, yet these words will sound very much like words we hear in the Gospels. Clearly, Paul is drawing upon a pre-gospel tradition about what Jesus said. Evening Bible Studies The Tuesday evening bible series continues at 7 PM. We meet in the rectory basement meeting room. We are studying the Acts of the Apostles. All welcome and you are encouraged to bring a friend! Remember a Loved One The Holy Mass would be of greater profit if people had it offered in their lifetime, rather than having it celebrated for the relief of their souls after death. (Pope Benedict XV) We have weekday Masses available in our 2014 Mass Book. Please come to the Rectory for Masses. Remember your loved ones or any other special occasion. Praying for the Sick In Our Parish Winifred Ballew, Rich Bongeorno II, Brian Bradley, Lillian Czaplicki, Tammy Chitwood, Be y Goeb, Terrie Kalina, Paul Koko, Shannon Nauss, Deanna Norman, Robert Schappert, Kelly Stec, and Stephen Toms. The name of your close relative will remain on this list for four weeks. After that, you will have to call us again to reinstate it into the list. If you wish to include a name of a sick member of your family here, please call Amanda at the rectory during office hours. Thank you. Liturgical Bits & Bytes Surplice Although our Altar Servers don t wear them (they wear a single robe), a surplice refers to the white blousy vestment, sort of like a tunic, worn by many altar servers as well as by some priests over a cassock. Some versions are long, reaching to the knees, or even the ankles. The ones we usually see reach to just below the hips. The combination of surplice and cassock is sometimes referred to as choir dress. Religion Education News Classes 1-8 start September 10, 2014, Pre-K and Kindergarten start Sept. 27, Registration for Religious Education for the school year is open. If your child was enrolled in Religious Education last year, they are automatically enrolled this year. This includes Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten. Letters with a calendar will be mailed out before the start of Religious Education. If you are new to the parish and you wish to register your children in Religious Education you can do so at the Rectory or you can contact Mrs. Christine Wedekind, Rel. Ed. Coor. at: Christine.wedekind@aol.com or call and leave a message for her at the Rectory, and she will return your phone call. In the spring the sacrament of Confirmation will be offered to all freshman and sophomore students who wish to be confirmed. If you are a high school student who has not received the sacrament and wish to be confirmed this is open to you also. You may also leave a message at the Rectory and you will be contacted. Remember to Pay it Forward. Table Talk for Families ( Families are what you define family to be!) Before you start, these conversations come out of a reading of Scripture. You may want to have a family member read the actual Scripture. This installment is based upon the Gospel of Matthew (16:21-27) which was proclaimed this weekend, August 30/31, 14. Here you go! Think like God 1. What are some ways in our approach to family or community life, we can think like people instead of like God? 2. What do you think it means that Jesus will repay each one according to his conduct (16:27)?

6 Page 6 August 31, 2014 Memorial Brick Garden Brochures are available in the Rectory and in the school office. We will place another order mid-september. After a 23-year absence, she returns to the Chicago area as congregational leader of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. Her current role takes her around the world to her order s varied and humble ministries. She travels from Rome to be here and share her immense gifts as spiritual guide, prayer animator, and inspirational speaker. This evocative one-day retreat, open to men and women, takes place at St. Catherine of Siena St. Lucy Church, 38 N. Austin Blvd., Oak Park, IL from 9 am to 3:30 pm on Sat., Sept. 6. The retreat is the collaborative effort of 6 local parishes. YEAR OF THE SACRAMENTS One Word at a Time Shape We Catholics say things like this all the time: get the baby baptized, get married, and even get ordained. The getting speaks of a momentary ritual, holy no doubt but then finished. After you get something, you ve got it. But there is a mistake in thinking about the sacraments this way. We don t get them as much as they get us. What do I mean? The sacraments surely have a focused ritual moment, but they also lead us beyond the moment. The sacraments are meant to shape the way we live. From the moment we are baptized or married or ordained or whatever sacrament we celebrate, that particular sacrament ushers us into a new way of living. It begins if we are open and responsive to it a new and fresh pattern of life as a disciple of Jesus or as a sign of God s love in the world or as a shepherd extending the Good Shepherd s care. Clearly, God s creative hand is here at work in our lives. POPE FRANCIS VISION OF HEALING AND COMMUNION Archdiocese of Chicago Strategic Pastoral Plan
