RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a sacramental process, celebrated in the midst of this Faith Community. This process assists adults, as well as children over the age of 7, in learning about the Catholic Faith. Through its witness, worship, service, and teaching our Faith Community offers the invitation and support necessary for initiation into the Catholic Church. Ministry to the Sick, Hospitalized and Shut Ins Please notify the Parish Office so that we can visit and minister to your confined loved-ones. Newcomers Please fill out a registration form after Mass, or come by the Rectory Office during the week. Last week I mentioned that we all need to keep faith alive by accepting Jesus Christ as our light: light that illumines and guides. My prayer this week has led me to ask the question, Where are the young people? And, not just at Christmas but each Sunday? Please don t misinterpret and think that Fr. Dennis is calling us old. It is a valid query: There are very few young people who gather at St. Catherine St. Lucy to worship and thank God. Children are an even more serious question. I remember mentioning to a staff member that I was extremely happy after one of our Sunday Masses because I heard a child cry. But that was the only child present. Where are the young Catholic Christians who can lead us and sustain us in the future? A legitimate question, indeed. My ongoing litany: Sunday worship leads us to becoming active in faith on Monday morning and all that follows. Let s make Sunday an event that gathers families and triggers our Christian sensibilities. We are a jewel of the west side: Let s not ask why folks in the area are not in church let s simply invite (the young). Remember, we are all obligated to be an evangelizer who lives in Christian joy! Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord. Psalm 122 A pearl of wisdom from A Courageous Leap of Faith: Upsetting the thought processes of modern society is a role of the Christian. We go for the jugular, the parts of modern living that need to be challenged. The lemming mentality of each contemporary age (let s just follow the leader) needs to be demonstrably realigned and the evangelized Christian soul aids the new direction and renewal. Daily Mass on Thursday will be at 9:30 AM The Rectory will be closed on Thursday & Friday Nov Working On The Margins This year a collaborative effort by several CCHD grantees helped pass the Illinois Domestic Workers Bill of Rights (HB 1288). This law grants domestic workers caretakers, housekeepers, those who clean and do household maintenance the same legal protections as other workers. This victory directly lifts up the poor. Please make a special effort during this Thanksgiving season to give generously to the CCHD Collection today. Your contribution will enable the poor to achieve greater dignity and all of us to work together to build God s kingdom of justice. NOVEMBER 20, 2016 OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE The goodness Christ the King draws out of me is...i share this goodness with others by... I experience fullness of Life in Christ s kingdom when... 1st & 2nd Readings for the Upcoming Sunday are offered. Their sole purpose is to help us all of us receive and hear the word of God. NOVEMBER 27, ST SUNDAY OF ADVENT First Reading: Isaiah 2:1-5 The prophet Isaiah dreamed of a day when Jerusalem (sometimes called Zion) would be the center of the world, and all people would come there to receive instruction from God. In this reading, Isaiah presents a vision of peace and prosperity for the whole world. Second Reading: Romans 13:11-14 Behind everything Paul wrote was his strong belief that the hour of Christ s return in glory was near at hand. In this passage, Paul uses the image of darkness and light to describe how Christians ought to live as they await that coming. Table Talk for families Families are what you define family to be! We were lucky enough to have one of our graduates return to lend a hand thank you, Javary Germany. The school s Thanksgiving Liturgy will be this Tuesday, at 10:15am, in church. All are welcome. Parent-Teacher Conferences are also this Tuesday, from 3-7pm. The parking lot will be a busy place. We are not in school Wednesday, November 23, through Friday, November 25. Look for our Boxtops for Education box, located in the church vestibule. Cut out boxtops from food and home products and bring them in to help our school. 6 Page 6 November 20, 2016 November: Month of the Holy Souls All are invited to bring photos of deceased loved ones to the church and place them in the window wells of the church. Photos will remain in the window wells throughout the month of November as we remember loved ones in prayer. Also, the Book of Remembrance will be in the Gathering Space throughout November so that you might enter the names of loved ones for whom you wish to pray. Advent Candles Advent Candles will be for sale next weekend of November after all masses. They are available for $5/ set of candles and $5 for a wreath frame. Christmas Shopping New this year will be shopping at Ten Thousand Villages in Oak Park from Sunday, December 4 Friday, December 9 during the normal hours of the store. This gives you 6 days to shop and the parish will receive 15% of your sale. All you have to do is mention St. Catherine-St. Lucy Parish to the cashier prior to the ringing up of your sale. You can shop one day or each day! Hours will be Sunday 12-5, Monday-Friday This is an opportunity to shop with purpose. Frankl The Giving Tree The Giving Tree will be in the sanctuary soon. As you shop this season, please remember the children whose wishes go unanswered by bringing a toy or children s book to put under the tree. They will be delivered to Catholic Charities for their toy showers in early December. A second way to share will be donations to Mary s Pence which helps women in Central America, Haiti, and Mexico. As usual, we are asking a voluntary donation of $1 per Little Blue Book. Kids in Church A catechist asked her children as they were on the way to Mass, And why is it necessary to be quiet in church? One bright little girl replied, Because people are sleeping. A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin 5, and Ryan 3. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. If Jesus were sitting here, He would say, Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait. Kevin turned to is younger brother and said, Ryan, you be Jesus! A father was at the beach with his children when the four-year-old son ran up to him, grabbed his hand, and led him to the shore where a seagull lay dead in the sand. Daddy, what happened to him? the son asked. He died and went to Heaven, the Dad replied. The boy thought a moment and then said, Did God throw him back down? Religious Education There will be RE classes on Wednesday November 30. A reminder that on Sunday, Dec. 4, the 10:30 mass will be a family mass and that the St. Nick's Pancake Breakfast is also this date following 8:30 and 10:30 masses. Registration is always open. If you have a child/children who you would like to register, contact the Rectory, leave your name and number and someone will call you. It is never too late. Give Central allows our parish to provide its parishioners a safe and convenient way to make regular, automatic electronic contributions and can also be used be used for special events and other collections.
