Communion To The Sick At Home A Revised Plan St. Bernard s Parish is blessed to have over two dozen volunteers trained to bring Communion to the Sick at home, in nearby hospitals and health care facilities. This is the Hands of Care ministry started many years ago. Of course, Fr. Joe and Deacon Kevin are happy to participate in this important outreach and ministry as well. The Hands of Care volunteers have been trained to show compassion to the sick as well as proper reverence to the Blessed Sacrament and how it is to be shared outside of Mass. While parishioners may have a sincere wish to bring Holy Communion to an infirm family member, there must be assurance that the person carrying Holy Communion is properly trained to do so. So, beginning in February, anyone wishing to bring Communion to an infirm family member needs to first contact the rectory and arrange a Communion visit by Fr. Joe. Fr. Joe can then assign one of the parish s many trained Hands of Care ministers to the Sick to arrange more frequent visits. Or, he can offer the required training to the family member who wishes to serve as a Hands of Care minister of Communion to that sick family member. To facilitate this revised approach, the priest at Mass will no longer be calling forward persons bringing Communion to the Sick after the Communion of Mass. Instead, those wishing Communion to be brought to the home will need to contact Fr. Joe or Deacon Kevin and make the appropriate arrangements through them. This unique liturgy, Sunday, January 20, 5:30 PM at St. Michael Parish, Highland, Orland Park will be concelebrated by representatives of Our Lady of the Woods, St. Bernard's, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Michael, Our Mother of Good Counsel and Annunciation Byzantine Catholic parishes. This Mass gives witness to the truth concerning the greatest human rights and moral violation of our time - legalized abortion on demand. This Mass begins the seventh year of the Knowledge and Prayer series sponsored by the 6 parishes above. Come to the Mass and receive the 2019 schedule of events. Abortion was legalized on January 22, 1973, in the now-infamous Supreme Court decisions in Roe v Wade and Doe v Bolton. People of many faiths or no faith are welcome to join us in prayer for the overturning of this decision and the restoration of respect for life from conception to natural death. St. Bernard Peace and Social Justice Ministry TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The cause of church unity is commended to Christians for prayer and action every year around this time. This week is not so much to focus on the many divisions within the Christian family, but on bonds of faith and mission. Even though Christians have always shown an inclination to fracture, spin off, and mutate into new expressions, recent history shows some new points of convergence and agreement. Catholics are more firmly rooted in the word of God, for example, and many Protestants are more likely to celebrate Communion than in years past. Some denominations are merging and pooling resources, and people from various traditions are collaborating on projects. The call of this week is to be mindful of the diversity of our traditions and customs while treasuring what we hold in common. The old advice to lighten up is good medicine, because sometimes our differences are delightful and amusing. If someone says, Let us pray, a Catholic might close the eyes, bow the head and fold hands; a Protestant reach out and clasp hands with the person in the next chair; and someone belonging to an Orthodox tradition might stand up with eyes wide open. Each has taken a different path, but the goal is always the same. This is a week not for focusing on the wellworn paths of divergence, but for mutual delight in a common goal.
